It’s all happening
Posted on July 28th, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Update:
Just took this snap around noon:
This was earlier today:
Hello Friends,
Again, very cold to start off this morning. But there were a hardy few in the water when I finally had enough light for a couple pics. Sets are pretty reasonable size too. The swell has pushed up into the two metre range from an average height of around 1.5 metres. It’s coming out of the SSE, as it has for the last four days, and the average period is also still plugging along at around 9 seconds. To keep things interesting, Huey’s also mixing in some very long period stuff – as in 14 seconds.
Wind is out of the west at around 10-15 kts on the north side of the bridge, while down at Kurnell and Little Bay, it’s more out of the SSW.
The outlook is for the wind to push up strongly though. By this afternoon it could be 25-30 kt from the south – and building to 30-35 kts by evening. Naturally, as that wind comes up, so will the swell. The Bureau is warning “Swell: SE 1.5 metres, increasing to 2.5 metres this afternoon, and 3 to 3.5 metres tonight. Waves breaking dangerously close inshore tonight. ” Oh, and there could be thunderstorms as well!
From the look of the forecast models, it would appear that the swell will peak overnight, but still be powering along at close to maximum intensity first thing tomorrow morning. The wind will be a major issue though as the Bureau is forecasting 20-30 kts S-SW, building to 30-35kts before backing off in the afternoon to 18-23 kts.
Wednesday is expected to be smaller.
All good!
Go well with your day and check back soon!
The Goat’s Surf Forecast
Posted on July 28th, 2008 in Forecast, Surf Reports.Surf forecast issued Monday 28 July 2008: 6 day outlook for Sydney:
Oh boy it’s cold…oh boy it’s cold… It’s cold, I’m cold, I’ve got a cold…(but I’m getting better, fingers crossed).
I saw 3 people in the surf this arvo in some smokin’ waves at Nth Steyne – 1 wisely got out before the first squall hit. At 5pm the temp was 9.3 and according to the Bureau the apparent temp was minus 0.9!
Now I don’t like that kind of temperature unless it is where it snows… and hey!?… The Bureau called yesterday’s white stuff covering the ground on parts of Sydney’s north shore “light hail”, but Belinda and Bruce said although it started falling as hail with loud bangs on the car when they were driving home, it then started falling very softly as flakes. Having seen a lot of snow down the mountains and lived a year in Boston (shoveling the car out of the snow etc), they said that the white stuff on the houses and ground at Frenchs Forest looked just like when it snows in Boston! So as far as we’re concerned, 6 month old Josh has seen his first snow – in Sydney, Sunday 27 July 2008!
Now that you know all that… if you’re still interested in the surf forecast…

North Narra Today
Posted on July 28th, 2008 in North Narrabeen.Dee Why shows some size at lunchtime
Posted on July 28th, 2008 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
I spent my lunch break down at the point seeing if I could get any footage or snaps. Although there were sizable sets, it was high tide so the quality wasn’t absolutely top shelf. Still, the wind wasn’t too bad and there were no more than 10 people in the water the whole time I was watching and snapping.
Here’s a little gallery of snaps I put together for ya! All taken between about 1330-1415.
- About to apply a little lippy…
- Don’t get hung up about it
- Stylin’ on the shoulder
- Fly like a…
- Another size-y one at the point
- Lotsa wall to play with
- Where’d that contact lens go…?
- Going for some greenroom
- Not small
- Step on it son!
- Jade coloured water fan
Murky but still a few waves
Posted on July 28th, 2008 in South Coast.Cold, rainy, cool SSW wind and 2-3ft+ waves. Not that appetising, but surfable and probably quite good in the right places. Rosco
Picking up today
Posted on July 28th, 2008 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.Looked like 4-5 feet of south swell and rising with a new swell building throughout the day. Should be cranking by the afternoon at the usual spots but Curly, no doubt, will be max out. Enjoy.

Rest day today
Posted on July 28th, 2008 in Surf Reports.Since Friday there has been plenty of waves about.Saturday was still fairly sizey but nothing like Friday.Alex and Noosa had some nice waves with a crowd to match.Moffats was ok but wasn’t lining up to good due to direction of swell. At 7am there was only 7 guys out.Numbers increased but the mal count was down due to the size.As the tide came the beach breaks were the place to be.On Sunday wave height and power were disappearing quickly but there was plenty of fun beaches around in the waist to chest high range..Today wave height is only braking in the 1-2 foot range. You will still get a few in you are keen.A new swell should be arriving very soon so hopefully we will have waves for the rest of the week.
