Fresh batch of swell

Posted on August 1st, 2008 in At large.

Hello Friends,

Pop! That’s the only way to describe what happened last night. After fading the power settings toward dark, Huey decided to crank them up hard at midnight. It went from around a metre to two metres, but more important, the average period went from 9 seconds to nearly 13 seconds. That is a serious boost in the juice levels and the SE swell is as a consequence lining up rather nicely at Dee Why point. The beachy is shutting down though, so all 30+ folks getting a quick wave in before work, were battling it out off the rocks.

Sets are well into the overhead range. The wind is lightly out of the NW as things get started on the first day of August. However, the Bureau says the wind is going to start accelerating soon and by this afternoon it could be blasting along at 30-40 kts. So, get out now if you can!

I’ll take a look at longer term prospects later today and in the meantime, I’ll try to get out and about with a camera before the wind gets too brutal…

Wow! That\'s a kick!

late arvo update, updated!

Posted on August 1st, 2008 in Dee Why, North Narrabeen.

Hi all,

Spent a couple hours in the water, wrote off a camera which sadly I can’t afford to replace. Oh well, looks like it recorded 40 wave vids before it passed on… Dee Why, like lots of other spots was firing this morning and through lunch time. Pulse only lasted about 12 hours and has really slumped.

Here are some snaps from Dee Why, and below them should be a set from North Narrabeen taken just before 3 pm.

I drove up to have a look at Northy after hearing tales of 8-sec barrels by Terry Fitzgerald. He didn’t appear to be in the water, and the swell was starting to fade, but it was extremely clean as you shall see…

SE swell NW wind – not a bad combo.

Posted on August 1st, 2008 in South Coast.

Looking a bit blowy on my stretch and getting moreso. If you can get some protection from the strong NW wind there should be some decent waves around. 2-4ft+ and some good lines around. Rosco.

Off the Richter at Dee Why Point

Posted on August 1st, 2008 in Dee Why.

Point is MASSIVE on sets at 0830. Saw a couple of 3X to almost 4X overhead sets a while ago. Crowd has backed off to about 15 in the past half hour.  Between sets looking about 4ft…THEN…WHAM. Some are almost closing out the channel. Not many of the biggest ones getting ridden.

Fine, dry and cold on the Central Coast this Friday morning.  The swell is smooth and solid at 3 – 6 feet from the east southeast.  There is no breeze at the moment with a west northwest breeze due and a westerly gale warning is out for later.  High tide 0805 and low tide around 1345.  Local barometer 997 hpa, 95% humidity, 6 degrees C.  Have a good weekend!
