Posted on August 8th, 2008 in Big Picture.Hello Friends,
Had to run an errand, so made a jaunt of it and had a look at a few beaches along the way. The day has improved quite considerably since this morning. The average size of the swell off Sydney has jumped from about a metre to three metres (!) and the period has gone from around 7 seconds to almost 9. It’s still straight south, but the size is making numerous spots light up.
South end of Curly had a few on it, but there was more size up the beach where there were fewer people. The banks looked a bit so-so and I didn’t see anyone really nail a great looking wave. Of course, I didn’t stick around long either.
Dee Why has started to work, although up toward Longy the size is better. Longy itself I didn’t really check properly, but it looks as though the bombies could be putting together a few options for those so inclined
Had a brief glance at Northy from atop the Plateau, and I could see a few bods in the water there too. Not at all the right swell direction for that place, so really more of an indicator of other possibilities.
The forecast models continue to insist that this little pulse is only going to stick around until maybe lunchtime at best tomorrow. So, if you can, I’d be heading out for a wave right now…
Have yourself a good one.
Dull day dawned
Posted on August 8th, 2008 in Big Picture.Hello Friends,
Well, what can I say Sydneysiders? As those who’ve preceeded me this morning have already noted, she be mighty tiny boys and girls. But for the odd tiny splash of white, the rocks and sea at Dee Why point have something of the aspect of a Japanese formal garden – serene, still, inscrutable – and utterly flat. I’ve loaded a picture of it for your quiet contemplation…
And what you are no doubt contemplating is how you’d really like a wave! Even something like one of these from yesterday’s gallery, would work.
But, sadly, Huey looks as though he’s lost interest in the Tasman for the moment. We may still get a brief, short-period pulse around about Tuesday, but that seems about the best hope for the next little while. Is the big guy softening us up for Spring’s traditional ordinariness?
Go well with your plans one and all!
TG’s updated update

Well that makes no sense at all does it unless you realise you click thru to the MHL graphs here
http://www.mhl.nsw.gov.au/htbin/wave_data_plot.com?Location=Sydney
and see the uptick in swell from dead South, 3-6 metres at around the 8-10 second mark.

And heey, it’s not every day you see a school of dolphins happily playing among the ferry traffic – right at the middle of the entrance to Circular Quay… !! between the Opera House and the Bridge. Second time they’ve been there this week. They obviously like it here. A whale was there a year or two back. What a nature wonderland Sydney is!

little lines on the south coast

Posted on August 8th, 2008 in Bronte, Tama.Update on previous. Good swell coming in from SE but try and beat the southerly. Bondi, Tama and Bronte all had good options to shoulder high. “Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes” as David Bowie would say.

Posted on August 8th, 2008 in Surf Reports.Nice little lines out of the S/SE but not real surfable on this stretch. Strong and cool W/SW wind, maybe a few spots with a bit more surfable action on offer. Rosco.

The charts indicate that things should improve substantially throughout the day as the swell swings more south east and the period pushes out a tad to 8 secs from 7 secs. This morning it was just 1-2 feet from the SSE feathered by light offshores and just a few loners having a crack. Enjoy.
