Hello Friends,

The models were calling for today to be just about flat… but it ain’t. Not big or anything, you understand, but definitely not so small you couldn’t have some fun. Yesterday saw a gradual increase in size of the south swell from under a metre in the morning, to just a touch under two metres now. More importantly, the power setting has gone up from under 7 sec to just about 8 sec (with some 9 sec peak component in there as well).

The skies may be sunny, but it’s nippy enough to be keeping the crowds down. Only a couple people at the point when I checked and not many more up along the beach.  Sets look to be around the waist high mark, so that probably means a few bombs into the chest high range.

The Bureau is calling for the swell to increase later today and, in line with the forecast models, to predict 2-3 metres of south tomorrow. However, at this stage there doesn’t seem to be any obvious sign of the increase on the data from the deep south. Eden buoy is still showing only about the same size and power as Sydney.

If you need to pick a day to take off between now and the end of the week, I’d be looking at Friday. Although, tomorrow and Thursday should be interesting in the lead up to the peak. Basically, it looks from the forecast models that the massive storm system headed our way will deliver 3-5 days of solid south swell and okay WSW winds.

Should be fun, so go well!

Why we look like having waves... WAM for this Thursday.

ONE WAVE, ONE AERIAL, $50,000

Posted on August 12th, 2008 in Contests, News Stories, Top stories.

One wave, one aerial. By anyone, anywhere. Winner takes all … all US$50,000.

The event window for the Kustom Air Strike, the surfing world’s richest contest for a single move, has officially open.

From 1 August 2008 the challenge has been thrown down to surfers the world over to land the biggest punt and capture it all on film. Win the contest, which runs through to 31 March 2009, and win US$50,000. Film the winning move and collect US$5000.

Harry Truscott, General Manager of surf footwear brand Kustom, said news of the Air Strike competition had already filtered around the world.

“We started to promote the contest during the recent Billabong Pro WCT event at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa and we had an incredible response. The web site absolutely lit up, with people registering from everywhere eager to receive updates on who is blazing” he said.

“Because the Air Strike is open to anyone surfing anywhere in the world. it is becoming a bit of a battle of the amateurs versus the professional surfers. There are so many kids frothing on the chance to knock off one of the big name pro’s. It is going to be amazing!

The Kustom Air Strike event is all about re writing the rules, and producing aerial surfing that was previously believed impossible. Going by the responses we have received so far, from surfers all over the world, when this thing closes in March 09, surfing will have been changed forever.”

But it hasn’t all been positively received. Says Stab magazine’s Sam McIntosh: “I’m afraid of an epidemic. Can you imagine how many good sections will be ignored as guys look for a ramp every wave, sniffing out the cash? Arch conservatives will recoil. Kustom will have a lot to answer for.”

The Kustom Air Strike website has been switched live today and will showcase select entries as they pour in from around the globe.

The winner will be the most radical and innovative ‘completed’ maneuver, with all entries posted on the website and judged by both the public and an expert panel.

The criterion is simple, with judges voting on height, innovation and completion of the aerial. Tow surfing is permitted, although riders are not allowed to use straps.

Definately worth a surf today before any wind gets into it. Best bets summer reef rights and lefts, Tama outcrop lefts and Bondi a whole kilometer of lefts and rights (waist to ear high). Ahh life, it can be so delicious at times.

3 feet and clean at Curly today

Mentawais = 1 week!  Had a great surf this morning at South Curly with some cracker right handers at 3 feet+, offshores and medium to low crowd braving the freezing conditions.  Water is cold, wind is cold, sand is cold- bloody everything was cold.  Should be surf all week and gettiing bigger by Thursday and well into the weekend.  Enjoy.

new S swell – but blowy

Posted on August 12th, 2008 in South Coast.

S swell has risen a notch into the 2ft range – bigger at the usual suspects. Long lines into a strong and cold SW wind not making it ultra appetising. Forecast is for the swell to rise a tad and wind to strengthen. Out of the wind could be some ok waves around.

Defunct Brothers Neilson Junior Surf Challenge Rescued by Arnette

Last year’s U16 Finalist Elijah Criaco will be out to win this year’s newly badged Arnette Junior Surf Challenge

Last year’s U16 Finalist Elijah Criaco will be out to win this year’s newly badged Arnette Junior Surf Challenge

International eyewear company Arnette has come to the rescue of the State’s premier grass roots surfing event, taking office of the recently defunct Brothers Neilsen Junior Surf Challenge on the Sunshine Coast which has been running for the last 12 consecutive years.

The collapse of Brothers Neilsen, which went into liquidation in June, left the prestigious tournament with an uncertain future and in desperate need of a naming rights sponsor. With the assistance of Arnette, the long-running event that was developed in the early 1990’s, now has a brighter outlook.

The all-new Arnette Junior Surf Challenge, running in conjunction with the September school holidays, will act as a fantastic introductory competition for those groms who have not competed before or have very little competitive contest experience with intermediate divisions included for first-timers.

The Arnette Junior Surf Challenge will honor the format that has made the event an institution on the Surfing Queensland calendar. All divisions feature a second chance format which guarantees surfers at least two bites at the cherry. In addition to maintaining the event’s traditions, Arnette has expanded the draw to cater to the micro groms of the sport by featuring under 8, under 10 and under 12 divisions.

Arnette is proud to be backing an event that encourages both participation and competitive sportsmanship by catering to intermediate and advanced surfers. And by reducing the entry fee it’s a low cost activity for kids on their school holidays.

Arnette Marketing Director  Graham Dickinson was very pleased at their acquisition of naming rights sponsorship to this great junior event saying, “Although the circumstances are not ideal, we are really excited having the Arnette brand involved in junior grass roots surfing. The Junior Surf Challenge has been on the Queensland calendar for years, and we are very pleased that we can keep it going.”

Surfing Queensland CEO Andrew Stark was elated at the news of the event survival saying, “This is one of the very best grass roots junior events in the country that has been running for over 12 years.”

“When Brothers Neilsen fell over recently we were genuinely disappointed for all the kids that were excited about competing in the event, but Arnette has really saved the day and provided the investment to keep this great junior surf comp alive. In school holidays on the Sunshine Coast at the start of the summer surf season, it’s such a perfect junior sport development event and we are really thankful of the great support of Arnette.”

Competition will commence on Monday 29th September, with finals being run on Friday 3rd October, 2008.

Divisions including boys U/18 and U/16 advanced, boys U/18 and U/16 intermediate, boys U/14, boys U/12, boys U/10, boys U/8 girls U/18, and girls U/16, girls U/14 along with girls U/12 will be surfed. All divisions feature a second chance format.

The main contest site is Maroochydore beach, but the event does have the option of going mobile on the Sunshine Coast.

Entries are now available from Surfing Queensland’s website: www.surfingqueensland.com or by calling the Surfing Queensland Office on (07) 5520 1165. All divisions are limited – First in first served basis!

RED BULL JUNIOR SURF MASTERS CARVES UP SYDNEY’S BEACHES

Posted on August 12th, 2008 in Contests, News Stories, Top stories.

If you’re between 15-20 years old, and dream of one day becoming a professional surfer like Aussie World Champion Mick Fanning, then get your wax out and your board ready cos’ Red Bull is on the lookout for the next big name in surfing!

Sydney’s Avalon and Cronulla beaches will be hosting two of the key qualifying events for the first ever Red Bull Junior Surf Masters, presented by current World Champion Mick Fanning.

Taking place on Saturday 23rd August (Avalon Beach) and Sunday 24th August (Cronulla Beach) both kick off at 8am. Red Bull Junior Surf Masters is a first time event being held across NSW this July and August giving young surfers an amazing opportunity to go head-to-head with Australia’s best Pro Junior surfers. The first prize is the biggest ever awarded for a junior surf event in Australia and is designed to help up-and-coming surfers launch their pro career into the World Qualifying Series (WQS) and beyond! Total prize pool for the whole comp is $50,000 – how cool is that?!!

How it works is that a series of five qualifying events will take place in various NSW locations. The top four surfers from each event (20 in total) will then be invited to battle it out on the water at the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Trials to be held at Queenscliff on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, on Friday 29th August, 2008.

The top four from the Trials will then compete against 16 Pro Junior Surfers, hand-picked by Mick Fanning in a new innovative surfing format called ‘Torched’.

Mick Fanning is stoked to give something back to grass roots surfing and will be attending the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Finals at Queenscliff to watch all the future Aussie pros in action! He’ll be joined by talented young Aussie surfer Julian Wilson (currently carving it up on the WQS Junior Pro tour), who will be one of the 16 Pro Juniors competing in the Finals.

“An opportunity like Red Bull Junior Surf Masters doesn’t come along very often and could be just the break these young guys need to launch their surfing careers,” said Fanning. “It will be an intense competition designed to pick only the best surfers, but is the first step that could realistically see someone go from their local beach to some of the most amazing surf venues in the world.”

“If you love to surf like me and are keen to take the sport beyond a hobby, then you’d be mad not to enter!” continued Fanning.

To apply to compete at either Avalon or Cronulla events, all you have to do is head to www.redbull.com.au and download an application form for the qualifying events. Applications cost $30, with all proceeds going to SNSW Surfing Development.  Even if you’re not competing, you can still enter the online competition for you and five mates tohang out with Mick Fanning at the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters finals in style – now that’s some serious star treatment!
