Slow build
Posted on August 14th, 2008 in At large, Collaroy, Dee Why, Long Reef.Hello Friends,
Just wanted to post a few piccies from a run-around I did about lunchtime.
Dee Why point was probably the best looking, but also the most crowded option. Long wait for kinda soft sets in the chest to shoulder high range. The beachy was shutting down too much to be of any real use and as you moved up the beach, the wind got more sideshore and the surface was chopping up.
Around the corner, there were some teaser lines at Makaha with no takers. A sole bodyboarder was messing about with the heavily offshore and not too powerful looking whiterock lefts. No one in the water from him until you got up to Marquesas where a couple of bods were packing sand into every orifice. Couldn’t see anyone at Northy, but then it is straight south!
Here are a few snaps:
- Noon: Breaking just off the beach on the bigger ones…
- You can’t see the 15 other blokes in the water because they’re hiding behind this wave at Dee Why point
- Rocky little number for this lonesome bodyboarder around noon.
- Soft shoulder for skating a turn out wide at Dee Why around noon.
- You could have had it to yourself at noon out there…long as you don’t mind weirdness and sections.
Swell arriving
Posted on August 14th, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Huey’s limbering up over there in the green room and it looks like he means business. Yesterday at this time the average size of our south swell was around a metre. It was dribbling along at about 7 seconds apart and if your beach wasn’t facing south, you had no hope. But, at around lunchtime it jumped up to 2metres at 9 seconds. While Sydney was sleeping, the size remained unchanged, but the average power setting has ratcheted up to 10 seconds, and there are now some 12 sec period sets in the mix as well.
You could’ve launched paper boats of the point yesterday morning, but today I watched some lucky pup take off on something fun looking that was into the chest high range. Sets along the beach are bigger, but the shutdown to makeable ratio is 99:1.
As the swell arrives, the wind will be pushing up as well. By this afternoon it’s set to be in the 20-30 kt range offshore. And the Bureau expects it to stay that way right through the weekend.
I’ll be out and about with my cameras at some point today, so expect a few more pictures from me.
Go well with your day!
A few snaps for the evening crew
Posted on August 14th, 2008 in Dee Why.Heya evening folk,
Grabbed a few snaps toward dark with Nikon’s schmick D300. Stay tuned for more in-depth remarks on that later…
Tide was stupid high, so it was all pretty fat down at Dee Why, but the light was nice!
- Long Reef looms in the background…
- Getting a bit of flex happening in the shories at Dee Why.
- Sunset cutty at Dee Why point.
- Bodyboarder tempted into a bit of silliness at Dee Why beach on dusk.
Dee Why Point still not quite firing–but tomorrow will be a different story…
