Ready to surf?
Posted on August 16th, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Looks as though Huey’s pushed the re-set button for us and we’re going to have Friday again… Reasonable size congergation was assembled at Dee Why as the sun peeped over the horizon this morning. They were picking off shoulder to head high sets at both the point and along the beach. Once again, the beach is mainly offering shutdowns and the point is pretty busy.
At first light, the swell off Sydney was still dead south and a touch over 2 metres on average. The power setting is a touch under 10 seconds on average, but the peak stuff is still around 11 seconds. This is just a bit less than yesterday morning and from the look of the models, it should stay around this level through today.
Speaking of the models, they’re still showing the swell building by another metre or so tomorrow as the period increases and the average heights at sea bump up into the 3-4 metre range.
The wind call is for W-SW 15-20 kts in the morning, building to 20-30 this afternoon. And it looks as though we’ll have the same deal again tomorrow.
All and all, I’d say we’re in for a classic winter weekend. You’ll be looking at your favourite south swell options, and those probably won’t include too many beachies, but those reefs and points could be the goods…
As I mentioned yesterday, I am currently testing Nikon’s D300. That means I got out and about with it yesterday and I’ll be doing the same again today. I posted a few snaps late yesterday of smokin’ Northy and Dee Why; check ‘em out here.
Get out there and have yourself a top old day!
Snaps from Sat., Nth & Sth Curly
Posted on August 16th, 2008 in Curl Curl. And here are a few piccies from South Curly taken around 1 ish.
- A few makeable ones at South Curly...
- North Curl Curl not too crowded...
Snaps from Saturday, 3: the mauling
Posted on August 16th, 2008 in At large, Curl Curl.Last stop on my little tour of the beaches was south Curly. Quite a few bods out there when I stopped by around 1230, but again, as with everywhere else, there was plenty of size on the big ones, but the makeable sections were pretty few and far between. Lots of exercise being got, but not so many memorable waves…
First up, a little sequence I shot of a bodyboarder not making the best decision re rocking off at South Curly…
- 2: he gets knocked down by one and another sweeps in...
- 1: perhaps having second thoughts...
- 3: there's a person in there... somewhere...
- Our plucky hero hauls in his board and makes for higher ground...
Saturday snaps: Longy & Dee Why
Posted on August 16th, 2008 in Dee Why, Long Reef.Hello Friends,
After checking out Cooks Tce, Warriewood and Northy, I headed down to Long Reef. Not too interesting it has to be said. Lots of close outs and kinda messy. Down the beach toward No Man’s it seemed a little better, and bigger, but shutting down like crazy. The point was the point, although it was not as juicy or intense as yesterday. Even so, I’d say it was the best quality option. There were some fun looking lefts peeling back toward kiddies from the direction of no man’s, but again, the dominant note was shutdowns.
- bang the lip son
- Getting whacked about 1150 at the point
- Tight fit in the shories at Dee Why around 1145
- 1130: Long Reef not too happening...
- 1145: a few covers on offer for the keen at Dee Why point.
- Looks like Coops from the forums... he hits the brakes as the section lines up at the point.
- 1145: Now headed the wrong way...
- It ends as you'd expect!
Saturday Snaps Cooks to Northy
Posted on August 16th, 2008 in At large, Cooks Tce, North Narrabeen, Warriewood.Hello Friends,
Did a lot of shooting but no surfing – and you’re the beneficiary! First up, pics from Cooks to Northy…
- 1050: Beautiful offshore, but 90 percent closeouts at Cooks Tce
- 1050: Beautiful offshore, but 90 percent closeouts at Cooks Tce
- 1050 Warriewood was inconsistent with lots of close-outs
- 1100: Northy dredging mostly unmakeable lefts at the alley.

Posted on August 16th, 2008 in Surf Reports.Next season’s parking stickers are starting to appear, so the swap is on again, but I DON’T NEED ANY MORE WARRINGAH STICKERS. Works like this – if you have a spare you want to swap, drop an email to stickerswap@hotmail.com with what you want/have in the subject line, i.e. “Have Pittwater, Want Manly”. If you want to buy a sticker, don’t contact me. Contact the relevant council, or post something in the Realsurf forum. And, as Don’s said, today is pretty much a carbon copy of yesterday. NN isnt quite lighting up as you might like, but considering how southerly the swell is, this is understandable. Look for a spot that likes it from the south, and Bob shall indeed be your uncle. Go now!

Very Very Very Nice.
Posted on August 16th, 2008 in Bronte, Tama.Close to perfect at Bronte and Tama today with an excellent left into Tama easy over head. Bronte reef slightly protected from the SE swell but still very good at shoulder high. Bondi a little inconsistent but worth the wait if you are willing to scratch around. And how about this weather?????
Dee Why: Patience is the word…
Posted on August 16th, 2008 in Surf Reports.Pretty long time between sets but there are some nice ones if you wait long enough. Head high on the biggest ones–not nearly as big as the models were forecasting on Thursday. Have to wait a bit to see what happens. Both interval and swell size have backed off and are no longer headed toward the 4+ m and 14 sec interval that the models were suggesting.

4-5 feet at Curly
Posted on August 16th, 2008 in Dee Why, Surf Reports.3-5 feet on the sets with light offshores and very straight with the occasional right hander at South Curly. There’s a few people in the water but if you pull one of the peeling rights it could be the wave of the month. Water cold- really cold. Enjoy.
Cold and Chunky
Posted on August 16th, 2008 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.Fine, windy and cold on the Central Coast this Saturday morning. The swell is smooth with a lot of water movement at 3 – 6 feet from the southeast. There is a light west southwest breeze forecast to strengthen later. High tide 0750 and low tide around 1325. Local barometer 1003 hpa, 67% humidity, 9 degrees C. Have a good weekend!
