Afternoon update for Monday

Posted on August 18th, 2008 in At large, Curl Curl, Manly.

Hello Friends,

Had a meeting down at Clontarf, so on the way back I took the opportunity to check out a few beaches and to grab some snaps with Nikon’s whizzy new D700 digital SLR. Manly was relatively small, but from about North Steyne up to Queenscliff, there were some rather clean and fun size sets getting in. It was moderately busy, but by Manly standards, relatively uncrowded. Wind was straight offshore too. It was pretty inconsistent (as was Dee Why beach where I surfed this morning), but there’d be a few people with happy memories from a partly cloudy winter’s afternoon at Manly.

Around the corner at Curly, there were only a few folks scattered along the beach. Again, the consistency was a problem, but the sets looked okay up toward the middle and there were a few into the shoulder high plus range.

A small group of whale watchers (and a helicopter) were checking out a mother and calf who were lazing about around 200 metres due east of south Curly pool.

Dee Why looked about the same as this morning, but the point definitely seemed smaller. However, I didn’t stop to check it out properly…

According to the MHL buoy, our swell has dropped down to around 2 metres. It’s still SSE and 10 seconds apart. The trend is likely to continue overnight, with sub 2 metre, sub 10 sec period stuff for tomorrow.

(BTW, if you’d like to see what my tech editor at Photo Review thinks of the Nikon D700, click here. I’ll be writing up a few thoughts on both the D700 and D300 from a surf photography perspective in the next week or so.)

Okay, here are a few piccies…

Waves for Monday

Posted on August 18th, 2008 in At large, Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

When I first looked at the point shortly before 0700, I thought the swell had faded pretty severely. But then I noticed where the early morning crew were sitting and a few minutes later, a very solid set hit. I hit the shutter button on the Nikon D300 I’ve been testing for the last three days and got the picture below.

From the look of the Sydney MHL data this morning, the swell has angled ever so slightly to the S by SSE. The average size at sea has come back from yesterday’s 4 metres to around the 3 metre mark. Power setting is still hanging in there at around 11 sec with some 12+ sec component in amongst it.

Wind is out of the WSW this morning and fairly light. The Bureau says it’ll be WSW 10-15kts during the morning, before shifting to SW-SE in the afternoon.

The models were pretty much right on the money with this swell. They’re currently calling for it to fade through the day and be back to relatively modest levels for tomorrow. The rest of the week looks kinda quiet, but Huey’s brewing up another spinner in the southern ocean and by next weekend it could be on again…

Oh yeah, almost forgot, I finally got a chance to edit some video I shot from the water at Dee Why point back on the 1st. You’ll find it top of the list on the realsurf.tv home page here.

Go well with your day and get a few waves if you can!

Dee Why looks setty, but when the big ones turn up, they're the goods.

A+ this morning

Posted on August 18th, 2008 in South Coast.

Got real big y’day, but has eased up a lot overnight. I’d put it in the 4-5ft+ range with the odd vaporiser set just to make things interesting. Lite offshore W/SW early, with pretty tidy condx around the place. The only downer was the mid morning high tide. Lunchtime onwards could see some beachbreaks come into play as the swell and tide drop. Rosco.

A Swell Swell But A Bank Holiday.

Posted on August 18th, 2008 in Bondi, Bronte, Surf Reports, Tama.

Nice solid swell coming in from the south but we don’t have the banks to hold it. Bronte reef working but much smaller and very crowded. Everywhere else big and close outs.

Fun to watch the tow-ins at Wedding Cake Island, Coogee yesterday afternoon. You guys are mad, seriously!

Next season’s parking stickers are starting to appear, so the swap is on again, but I DON’T NEED ANY MORE WARRINGAH STICKERS. Works like this – if you have a spare you want to swap, drop an email to stickerswap@hotmail.com with what you want/have in the subject line, i.e. “Have Pittwater, Want Manly”. If you want to buy a sticker, don’t contact me. Contact the relevant council, or post something in the Realsurf forum. Still a white-out at NN, but as with the past 3 days, there’s plenty of clean swell at other places

Young Hawaiian Keanu Asing Wins Billabong Pro Junior Series Canggu, Indonesia/Bali

Keanu Asing Wins

Keanu Asing Wins

Canggu, Bali — Keanu Asing (Hawaii/Oahu) today won the Billabong Pro Junior Canggu event in Bali Indonesia, defeating Australia’s Ice Periera (Gold Coast/Coolangatta) in an entertaining and high quality final.

Asing is just 15 years of age but the powerfully built youngster from Hawaii disposed of his older and more fancied rivals methodically to eventually take the final out comprehensively with final scores of 16.25 to  Asing to Periera on 14.30 for their top two scoring rides.

In wind swept  high performance 1m surf at the famous River Mouth break both finalists displayed their powerful attack and utilized a wide variety of moves which included high risk aerials.

Aerial surfing was a feature throughout the event with the wave offering aerial opportunities frequently and Asing commented on his win saying – “This is my biggest win ever. It’s been such a fun week of waves here and this place really suits my style – You need to really mix up your surfing out there and even in the strong winds there’s plenty of scope to score big, fortunately it worked for me today.”

Asing took down plenty of quality opposition today including number one seed Nic Vasicek in his quarter final and then defending event champion Heath Joske (Both Australian’s) in his semi final.

For Ice Periera, today’s second placing was also his best ever performance and throughout the event he was consistently scoring in the outstanding high 8 and 9 point range but probably had his toughest heat in the all important final where his top score was still a strong 7.5 ride, although well short of his previous heat performances.

In his quarter final today, Periera peaked when he outgunned event favourite Tamaroa McComb (Tahiti) in a high scoring shoot out where Periera came from behind to find two excellent rides in the final 10 minutes to take a memorable win.

Satisfied with his overall result performance Periera said “It’s great to make a final at this level and this result gives me a lot of confidence to build on – It’s been a great event and to perform well in high quality waves means a lot to me – I fell short in the final, really only needed a good second scoring ride but I couldn’t find it – that’s surfing”

Local Indonesian surfers were prominent throughout this event and local Balinese surfer Raditya Rondi made the semi finals to be the best placed Indonesian with an equal 3rd overall.

Raditya displayed a fluent and powerful backhand style and in his quarter final today defeated second highest placed Indonesian surfer Wayan Susiana (5th overall).

The Billabong Occy Grom comp finals were also surfed today. Mark Occhilupo, the 1999 ASP World Champion, was on the beach to watch all the days’ action and the youngsters went crazy with huge moves and scores a plenty.

Tahiti’s Tamaroa McComb is widely regarded as the most exciting young emerging surfer in the world and his performances throughout this event were incredible – He won the 16 Boys final easily with two 9 point plus rides.

The 14 Boy’s final was far closer with the lead changing several times before Australia’s Creed McTaggart (Margaret River) claimed the win with an excellent final 8.5 ride.

The overall Billabong Pro Junior Indonesian Series for 2008, with ratings cumulated across all three events, was won by Australia’s Nick Vasicek and for his win he picked up an awesome Nixon watch.

Highest placed Indonesian surfer of this series went to local surfer Ketut Yoga Semadhi and he will now take a wild card into the VZ Trials preceding the ASP Billabong World Junior Championships in Sydney next January.

The other highlight of today’s final day was the efforts of all at the event who participated in a beach clean up. Incorporating the R.O.L.E foundation into the event, multiple large bags of rubbish were collected to be disposed of correctly and Mark Occhilupo closed the event with an enjoyable question and answer prize session with the local youngsters, focusing on the importance of looking after the beaches.

Merewether surfer Wes Bainbridge is the winner of the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters regional qualifying event in Newcastle. The popular local surfer was a crowd favourite all day and continued his commanding form in the final with some critical lip bashes and a series of swooping roundhouse cutbacks.

Bainbridge defeated one of his good mates, Merewether’s Jesse Adam who also surfed amazingly in the tightly contested final. “I surf against Jesse all the time so it was great to come up against him today in the final. I think local knowledge helped us out there today. We knew where to sit and which waves to pick. It’s been a big day. I’m tired but really stoked with the result.”

At just 16 years old, Bainbridge showed spectators today he can surf well beyond his years.”This is the best contest win I’ve had in ages,” he said. “It’s been such a great event and I’m frothing to go to Sydney to see if I can make it through to the Final.”

The surf conditions maintained great form throughout the day and the surfing was spectacular. Avoca’s Dane Atcheson finished third in the final and Sam Lendrum came fourth.

All four finalists will go through to the next stage of the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters at Queenscliff (Aug 29-31). They will compete against the best four surfers from the other regional qualifying events (20 surfers in total). The top four surfers from that battle will then face a field of the best 16 Pro Juniors in Australia, handpicked by current ASP World Champion, Mick Fanning.

Head Judge, Steve Evans said the standard of surfing was exceptional across the field today. “When you get great waves like we had today, it lifts everyone’s standard and makes it a much more exciting day for everyone involved,” said Evans.

Evans has been judging junior surfing for over twenty years and has seen a number of young Newcastle surfers go on to become international surf stars (including Matt Hoy and Luke Egan). “There are at least 12 surfers here today who are capable of making a fulltime career out of surfing,” he said. “Red Bull Junior Surf Masters is a great motivator because it shows the kids what level they need to reach to achieve their goals and the type of treatment you can expect at major contests. I hope it becomes an annual event!”

Contest Director, Matt Wilson explained the concept behind Red Bull’s innovative Junior Surf Masters: “The idea is to encourage junior surfing at a grass roots level and to help aspiring professional surfers launch a career in the sport. At the final we will be launching a new contest format called ‘Torched’ which offers an exciting new approach to contest surfing.”

The remaining qualifying events for Red Bull Junior Surf Masters will be held at Sydney’s Avalon and Cronulla Beaches on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August, respectively.
