Waves around still
Posted on August 19th, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why.- Shapely shutdowns on offer in front of Marquesas around 0900.
- 0930: typical of the sets getting in mid-morning.
- 0715: the waits are getting longer, but we're not done yet.
Hello Friends,
All the curves headed down for Sydney last night, but this morning still sees the odd set coming through. Dee Why looked to be pretty uncrowded, actually, there didn’t seem to be very many folk in the water at all. Only a few bods at the point which, as the picture shows, is getting a wave every now and then.
Since this time yesterday, the average size of swell at sea has dropped from around 3 metres to a touch under two. The average power setting has slipped from 10+ seconds to something closer to 8. There is still some longer period (11 sec) swell showing up and I suspect it was one such set in my picture for this morning.
Swell direction, according to the MHL buoy, is roughly SSE. That’s a good thing, because it should open up a few more surf options around the place even as this swell fades away over the next day or so.
It still looks as though we might get a bit of mainly south windswell at the weekend for Sydney, but the model run for this morning are not as interesting as they were a couple days ago. It would appear that brunt of the pulse will be felt north of us.
Winds are due to slacken off today and to swing from the SW to the NW. Tomorrow should see more NW wind, but I reckon it won’t be too much of an issue until the afternoon. And the swell should still just barely be around…
Go well with your day!
Postcard from Malibu
Posted on August 19th, 2008 in California, Postcard. Our ex-Bondi reporter checked out the surf situation at Malibu a couple days ago and sent us a pic… might be a bit bigger there in a couple days when the big south swell we had here in Sydney gets across the Pacific…
Day two of Oxbow & more waves
Posted on August 19th, 2008 in Contests, News Stories, Top stories.Big scores herald day two of Oxbow Australian Longboard Titles
(Port Macquarie, NSW – Monday, August 18 2008): As conditions continued to improve at Port Macquarie for the Oxbow Australian Longboard Titles, so to did the surfing as the scores soared.
Beau Nixon (Toukley, NSW) was in spectacular form in the under 18 boys division, displaying the classic style of old.

“I was really happy with how I went out there,” Nixon said after his first round heat.
“It’s my first Australian titles so I’m super hungry for a good performance.”
With 180 surfers from around Australia competing across the 11 divisions at the Oxbow Australian Longboard Titles, Nixon believes this event is critical for Australian surfing.
“This event is very important for younger competitors like myself as it brings together the national Longboard community,” he said.
“It’s an awesome contest and it’s really good for the sport,” Nixon added.
In the Open Women’s division it was Chelsea Williams (Tweed Heads, NSW) who outshone her fellow competitors.
Finishing second at the Roxy ASP Women’s World Longboard Titles earlier this year, Williams showed her prestige in the near-perfect conditions at Town Beach, accruing a sensational total heat score of 14.15 (out of a possible 20).
Having received a wildcard into the event, Williams, a three-time Australian Champion certainly made the most of her late call-up.
Selby Riddle, Georgie Roach and Rosie Locke also progressed through to the next round, demonstrating the abundance of world-class talent currently permeating throughout Australian female longboarding.
Representing the elder statesmen it was Peter Hudson (Port Macquarie, NSW) who displayed silky skills en-route to his round one victory in the Over 55 division.
Surfing on his home-break, Hudson racked up one of the highest single-wave scores of the day – a 7.50 point ride (out of a possible 10) – which saw him displaying the full gamut of manoeuvres.

Following the Oxbow Australian Longboard Titles will be the Na Papa Surfmasters Titles, running from Sunday August 24 until Saturday August 30 2008.

worth a paddle
Posted on August 19th, 2008 in South Coast. Some decent beachbreak waves around early before the tide got into it. 2-4ft S/SE swell with an icy SW breeze early. Looks to me like this arvo could be pretty pleasant with the sun out and the wind going around to the NW/NE?

3-4 feet at Curly this morning
Posted on August 19th, 2008 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.2 days till Bali/ Mentawais!!! 3-4 feet with offshores and a mid tide at 8am. Not spectacular but there’s plenty of waves and size is still ok. Enjoy.
Dee Why–Fading, but not dead yet
Posted on August 19th, 2008 in Surf Reports.Earlier it appeared things were going flat pretty quickly but last half an hour has seen an increase in some decent sets at the Point. Nothing too flash but there is the odd head high wave. Mostly, it’s around waist to chest high. Up the beach it’s clean and bigger but the banks don’t look to good and most of the ones I watched were seeming to close out. Looks like more swell coming later in the week though…
Cheers,
Rob
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Posted on August 19th, 2008 in Bondi, Bronte, Tama.5 degrees at 5am! So cold out there this morning I would’ve edged better with a snow board. The swell is half the size and strength of yesterday but still good fun. It’s pretty much missing Bronte but Tama has some shoulder highs. Bondi the pick with some good head high action and some decent banks.
Cool and Cute
Posted on August 19th, 2008 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.Fine, clear and cold (after a night with some heavy showers, 3mm) on the Central Coast this Tuesday morning. The swell is smooth still with a lot of water movement at 2 – 3 feet from the east southeast. There is a light to moderate west southwest breeze forecast to go northeast later. High tide 0940 and low tide around 1530. Local barometer 1019 hpa, 79% humidity, 6 degrees C. Have a good one!
