Late arvo update
Posted on August 22nd, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Friday’s winding down, so thought I’d toss up another pic of the situation and offer a few thoughts…
During the day the swell has picked up out at sea, going from this morning’s 1 metre on average to over 2 metres. Swell is still dead south and the period is only up a touch to about 7 seconds. Hence the lack of anything surfable at Dee Why.
For some days now, the models have been calling for a low to develop off the east coast. The Bureau’s latest summary says the following:
A low presently developing off the central New South Wales coast will deepen rapidly overnight leading to strong to gale force south to southwest winds along the coast. The low will move further away towards the east during Saturday and winds are expected to gradually ease along the far southern New South Wales coast by late Saturday and along the central and northern coasts during Saturday night and early Sunday. A high will move over the state during Sunday and Monday resulting in lighter winds.
What this likely means for us is a rather messy, short period south windswell in the shoulder to head high plus range.
I’ll be up bright and early to do the 702 ABC surf report, so check in about 0730 if you’re interested!
Have yourself a great evening!
Drizzle and no sizzle
Posted on August 22nd, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Sad to say it’s starting out as a dull old day. Like many of you, I awoke to the sound of fitfully dribbling downpipes and grey skies. The wind is not much of a factor but it’s due to ramp up later and be in the 20-30 kt range from S-SW by this afternoon. At around 0600, the average period dropped from 10 seconds to just six. Not that it matters given the foregoing, but the windswell has perked up ever so slightly to around the metre mark. Of course the bulk of the energy is coming from the SW, so there is really nothing hopeful in the numbers at this stage.
The Bureau says that tomorrow will be windy to start (S-SW 25-33 kts), but the swell should have started to build into the three metre range at sea. With luck the juice will stick around into the beginning of next week.
Another good day for hammering away at work I’d say.
Have a good one, and get up to some good on the way through, eh?

How Mushrooms Can Help Save The World

Mushrooms? Save the world? Sounds totally loopy, but by the time this 18-minute talk finishes, you’ll feel like you not only have a bigger brain, but that you’ve also had a peek into our fungi future. From extraordinary pollution clean up powers, through astounding anti-viral capabilities, to killer pest control, carbon sequestration capacity and bio fuel production, this is an amazing journey. Watch it and you’ll feel like joining the audience in the standing ovation at the end. Highly recommended!
