Grey skies, wind …what more do you want?
Posted on September 5th, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Huey’s behaving more or less as anticipated this morning. It’s pretty rugged looking and when I had my first squizz of the day around 0730, the wind was blowing more or less steadily at 20 kts from the SE. Dee Why was therefore pretty torn up again and although Huey’s bumped up the juice setting to 9 seconds (with some 13 sec stuff in the mix) and the average size is close to 3 metres at sea from the east, nobody was tempted.
From the look of the buoy data, the average size ramps up as you head north from Sydney. Both the Coffs and Byron traces are showing average heights of around 4 metres (with about the same period as we’re seeing around here). Sadly, the further north you go, the more the wind goes around to the east and north east. At 0730 Byron was clocking 25-30 kts from the ENE (blergh).
The outlook for Sydney is not too flash. The Bureau says the wind will push up this morning and by lunch it could be 25-30 kts from the E-SE. On the good side, the swell will keep increasing as it heads to a peak probably in the next 24-36 hours. As the low moves south, the weather persons tell us that the wind will swing more to the S-SW but it’s set to keep blasting along at 20-30 kts.
Overall it looks like another good day to be at work or school.
Go well with your day!
Crazy conditions at Pro Junior
Posted on September 5th, 2008 in Contests, Site News, Top stories.
On a day when almost all surf beaches on the NSW mid north coast were closed and completely out of bounds, the ASP Billabong Pro Junior was all go in solid stormy 6 to 8ft surf at One Mile Point near Port Stephens.
Surfers had to call on all their ocean skills to deal with the surf but high scoring rides were very achievable with excellent 8 and 9 point rides posted by those who could deal with the treacherous conditions.
Heath Joske (Valla Beach/Nambucca Heads), known for his charging of larger surf reveled in these waves posting an excellent 8.6 ride on his way to an easy round two heat win.
“I loved it out there, seriously challenging but good when you found the right wave. It could be even bigger tomorrow and if it is I’ll be loving it, bring it on!” said an excited Joske after his heat.
Surfers known for coping in larger conditions excelled throughout the day. Solidly built and powerful sunshine coast surfer Jasper Endersby (Perigian Beach/Sunshine Coast) coped well to advance to round three while many other more fancied Sunshine Coasters were eliminated including Chris Friend along with girls Naomi Stevic, Lori Kelly and Brianna Lenton who were all eliminated yesterday.
Tye Watson, (Currarong/Sth Coast NSW) was the days standout easily defeating number high seed Owen Wright – 18 year old Watson has been building his reputation on the tour as a powerful and exciting surfer and he clearly was right at home in today’s surf.
After his heat Watson said “Stoked to win and especially to beat Owen, we’re great friends and surf together at home all the time. The waves are great for me, I much prefer this to small waves and I feel confident after that heat.”
Owen Wright on the other hand struggled today and was very lucky to advance in second place behind Watson.
With swells continuing to build and winds expected to finally moderate and turn offshore tomorrow there’s an excellent chance the weekends finals will be held in perfect large surf at One Mile Point.

Yep, still messy. Just bigger.
Posted on September 5th, 2008 in Curl Curl, Dee Why, Freshwater, Long Reef, Manly, Surf Reports.Nothing much has changed since this morning, except that the mess has gotten bigger. Onshore slop at Dee Why, Curly and Manly this afternoon. Just had a look at all three and there’s nothing to recommend from the Bower to Long Reef. Forecast is for it to keep getting bigger and for the wind to shift to SW by midday tomorrow so things could clean up by tomorrow afternoon. No point rushing off from work for a surf today, unless there might be something at Collaroy, but I doubt it. Cheers, Rob

Posted on September 5th, 2008 in Surf Reports.Next season’s parking stickers are starting to appear, so the swap is on again, and URGENTLY NEEDS MANLY STICKERS. Works like this – if you have a spare you want to swap, drop an email to stickerswap@hotmail.com with what you want/have in the subject line, i.e. “Have Pittwater, Want Manly”. If you want to buy a sticker, don’t contact me. Contact the relevant council, or post something in the Realsurf forum. From my vantage point, Bondi looks to be getting waves. Grey filthy windblown waves
