Monday and waves
Posted on September 8th, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Looks as though we still have plenty of wave energy around this morning. For instance, it seems that the sets are just a bit too big to allow many folks to get out to the peaks breaking off Dee Why beach. The point was occupied from first light of course, but given the size, it wasn’t that crowded. And the wind is lightly offshore under sunny skies. Nice looking combo.
The swell does look fairly lumpy still, so you couldn’t call the conditions all time (well, not at Dee Why anyway). The MHL Sydney buoy is showing that it’s two metres at 10 seconds from the E. There is some 12 sec component in there as well, so I’d be expecting a few bomb sets in the mix this morning.
Our wind call from the Bureau today is for W-SW 10-15 kts early, swinging S-SW and getting up to 20-25 kts by lunchtime.
The low responsible for our swell has headed off into the Tasman in the usual way, but instead of dissipating as often happens, the Bureau says it’s intensifying and that should mean that the surf won’t go away for a few days yet. In fact, I’d expect it to stick around at about the current size, but to be coming from the southern quarter through to the middle of the week.
I’ll try to get a few more piccies from around the place today, but in case you missed it, here are a few links to some I shot yesterday. This batch includes Brownwater and Manly, this group is from south Narra and this one is from the Bower and Winki.
Enjoy and go well with your day!
Week 35-08 in Samoa from Sa’Moana Resort

WEEKLY REPORTS for 2008
Report No: 35-08
Period: Monday 1st to Sunday 7th September
The highlight of the week was the big swell on Monday, 20ft faces at Boulders making for some heart pounding drops, great fun. SE winds again this week, mostly dry with only a few showers
Monday. High tide 7:43am, low tide 1:47pm Awaking to a huge swell Boulders was THE spot. When the crew arrived the tide was still quite high and it was lumpy with some backwash off the point. As the tide dropped the waves cleaned up & combing with an ever increasing swell made for an epic days surfing with solid triple overhead monsters marching in. The adrenalin was pumping on nearly every drop down the 20 ft faces with carnage delivered on one set smashing the lineup and claiming two boards in the process, and another about two sets later got smashed onto the headland.
Tuesday. High tide 8:26am, low tide 2:28pm There was no doubt about a return to Boulders today. Even though the swell had dropped considerably solid double overhead sets were rolling through. Combined with no wind and clean conditions some great waves were scored, without the same fears as yesterday.
Wednesday. High tide 9:10am, low tide 3:09pm The large swell had swung even more to the east today, meaning that less was bending around the corner and coming into Boulders. Still the occasional sets were pushing through providing some good rides for the crew. With the wind back up it wasn’t as clean as yesterday but still great.
Thursday. High tide 10am With the swell dropping considerably overnight, but still being largely from the east, it made for some nice looking conditions at Village Lefts. Some still quite sizable sets rolling through (10-12ft faces) and lining up nicely a few good rides were enjoyed in the morning session.
Friday. High tide 11:04am Similar conditions meant a return to Village Lefts this morning. Some nice long rides were scored in the SE swell and even the occasional barrel was thrown up as VL occasionally did its best impersonation of G-Land.
Saturday. High tide 12:19pm The ESE winds were up so a few of the crew went with Brent for an arvo surf down at Village Lefts. With a new SW swell starting to push in as well as the remaining SE swell some of the waves were closing out rather than running all the way down the line. However VL handled the ESE winds well as the faces were quite clean and workable.
Sunday. High tide 1:30pm A boat trip to Pebbles was the plan for today as it is off shore in the SE trades & they found clean little waves pushing along the reef and barreling on the inside section in what was a fun session in the waist to shoulder high conditions.
Photos.
All shots Boulders on Monday, 35a-08 Unknown bottom turns, 35b-08 Nick pulling a great bottom turn, 35c-08 Steve in a full layback, 35d-08 Unknown on a hooter.
close of play for Monday
Posted on September 8th, 2008 in Big Picture.Hello Friends,
Well, there goes Monday. Started out rather nicely, but then the wind kicked in and, as you can see from the pic, Dee Why wasn’t looking to great as the horizon started to block our view of the sun…
The SSE’rly was blowing at 15-20 kts which of course accounts for the unphotogenic surface conditions. Felt pretty chilly too.
With Monday sorted, our thoughts turn to tomorrow’s prospects…
The Bureau says we can expect another mostly sunny day for Tuesday with highs along the coast reaching around the 18 mark. We’re due to start out with 20-25 kts of S-SW wind, but it should ease back a little during the day and be in the 10-15 range toward dusk.
Swell forecast is for 2-3 metres from the S-SE. The latest run of data from the MHL Sydney buoy is showing 3 metres from the south with an average period of 9 seconds. According to the models, we should have swell of about this description for at least a couple more days too.
Have yourself a good one!
Caught a few at the Bower
Posted on September 8th, 2008 in At large.Hello Friends,
Went for a splash with 20 or so others at Winki and the Bower this morning. Tide was coming in by the time PB and I paddled out, but there were still a few fun ones to be had. Biggest sets were around the head high mark (maybe a bit bigger right at the top of the breaking zone) and the water felt particularly cold.
It seemed to pick up while we were out, so when I got back and checked the MHL data, I wasn’t too surprised to see that it’s jumped from an average of 2 metres to 3 or so, while at the same time the direction has gone from ESE to the SSE. The average period has dropped from around 10 sec to a touch under 9. Meanwhile, the wind has moved around to the SSE and is going along at 15-20 kts as I write this in the late afternoon.
- PB jags one of the bigger set waves to come through at the Bower.
- Jusdin is on his second visit from BC.
