0720: how to make a small wave look bigger - use a kayak!

Looks as though Huey’s built Sydneysiders a little ESE windswell overnight. The emphasis is on little though, because the numbers are fairly ordinary: 1-2 metres at 8 seconds on average. There is some 11 second stuff in the data, so I’d guess that might account for the chest high set I saw briefly wobble into the beach at Dee Why 20 minutes ago.

I don’t think you’ll find anything much above the aforementioned chest high mark this morning, but there should be a few little options about the place – thanks to the mainly ESE direction.

Wind is currently out of the NNW at well under 10 kts. The Bureau says it’ll pick up to around 10-15kts and then, as afternoon comes on, it’ll swing atound to the N-NE at 20-25 kts. When that happens, I’d expect the period to get shorter as the primary direction moves around to line up with the wind direction. Quite a summery outlook in that regard.

Midday update

Nothing too exciting, but at least you could sort of catch and ride 'em.

Decided to get away from looking at the computer and go for a bit of a paddle at Northy. Tide was too high, but there were occasional waves into the shoulder high range. A lot of backwash was coming off the beach, so waves would double and cancel abruptly. The rights seemed a bit better than the lefts and the crowd wasn’t too horrendous considering. If I had to rate the overall quality, I’d give it about a 4 out of 10.

Finally back from Mentwawais/ Telo’s and melbourne after a month away to find no chance of a decent wave at Curly and the outlook is equally dismal.  Should be a cracker of a weekend weather wise though- enjoy.

Fine, dry and mild on the Central Coast this Friday morning.  The swell is smooth and small at 1 – 2 feet from the east northeast.  There is no breeze at the moment but set to go northwest to northeast.  Low tide 0410 and high tide around 1045.  Local barometer 1008 hpa, 95% humidity, 11 degrees C.  Have a great weekend!
