Snooze and you still don’t lose
Posted on October 13th, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Well, what can I say? Huey’s wandered off to some other corner of the planet and left our swell machine sputtering to a stop. The Sydney MHL buoy is showing about a metre of 7 sec NE windchop. And from the look of the other buoy data along the east coast, it’s pretty much the same everywhere else.
So, the obvious question for east coasters, is when will it change?
Wind is set to be out of the NW at 8-13 kts this morning, but it should swing to the NE and get up to 20-25 kts. We had a similar pattern yesterday and it didn’t seem to result in anything surfable in the way of windswell waves. I’m not overly hopeful that it will be different today either.
Tomorrow the call is for a strongish S-SE change of 20-30 kts, but from what the models show, it doesn’t seem too likely that we’ll get much of anything in the way of waves as a consequence. There could be a small uptick around Wednesday simply because the S-SE wind should still be going along at around the same speed as Tuesday. So, little junky onshore waves – if we’re lucky.
And beyond that… well, those models continue to show all the swell energy being deflected away from the east coast toward the west coast of NZ. It looks like a pretty stable pattern, so my guess is we’re in for a wait for any improvement…
Go well with your day and keep on smilin’!
Surf report for week 40 of 2008 from Sa’Moana resort

WEEKLY REPORTS for 2008
Report No: 40-08
Period: Monday 6th to Sunday 12th October
Well it happens every where right across our great surfing world at some time or other and unfortunately last week was pretty ordinary one in Samoa so its a very brief surf report for last week.
Monday through Friday Saw a combination of little to no swell combined with strong SE winds meaning the only surfing was a desperation paddle out the front @ Resorts on Thursday and Friday for the eager & keen (diehards would be a better term).
Saturday. High tide 3:55am and 4:18pm With the over night promise of a new SW swell, after a bit of a dry spell, all the crew were getting pumped about the thought of the potential for today. With the early high tide a few guys made it out of the for a pre dawn paddle out the front @ Resorts with a few nice clean head high peaks making the early rise well worth while. In the afternoon with a rising swell they charged down to Pebbles and were greeted by overhead barrels in the strong offshore conditions. They all scored one or two good ones with some deep tubes made.
Sunday. High tide 4:34am and 4:55pm Awaking in the early hours with high hopes they headed back to Pebbles in the early morning light. On arrival they found some overhead peaks plunging into the reef and the occasional classic barrel was scored. The benefit of the morning session was the lack of wind which did not blow up until the arvo.
Apologies for shots this week, but I’ve popped in of our great pool at Sa’Moana Resort that is an awesome place for a plunge and an ‘in water refreshment’ no matter what the waves are like.
Cheers……………George
14 YEAR OLD WRIGHT YOUNGEST TO WIN AN ASP WORLD TOUR EVENT IN HISTORY AT BEACHLEY CLASSIC
Posted on October 13th, 2008 in Contests, News Stories, Surf News, Top stories.

Australia’s Tyler Wright (AUS/Culburra/Sth Coast NSW) created history today becoming the youngest ever surfer to win an ASP World Tour event. At just 14 years of age Wright won the Beachley Classic, Women’s surfing richest event with $US100 000 in prize money – Wright defeated Brazilian Silvanna Lima in the final.
MANLY BEACH, Australia (Monday, October 13, 2008) – Tyler Wright (AUS), 14, made ASP History today as the youngest ever winner of an ASP World Tour event, defeating fellow finalist Silvana Lima (BRA), 23, at the Beachley Classic in peaky two foot (1 metre) waves at Manly Beach.
Stop No. 5 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Beachley Classic was treated to dramatic action all week, with the increased 20% ratings points wreaking havoc on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Title race before culminating in Wright’s historic win.
“This is easily the best day of my life,” Wright said. “I’m so stoked. I don’t really have the words to describe it. I knew Silvana (Lima) would be dangerous out there so I just did my best to stick to my game plan and get waves.”
Wright, who gained entry into the Beachley Classic after her impressive win at the Oakley Trials last Thursday, went on an absolute tear, defeating reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 29, and Amee Donohoe (AUS), 27, en route to her Finals berth with Lima.
“These are girls that all us grommets look up to and to just be competing with them is an honor,” Wright said. “I had no expectations whatsoever this week for myself and I think that really working in my favor.”
The young natural-footer has been on a tear lately, qualifying for the prestigious Billabong ASP World Junior Championships last week before going on her giant-slaying here in Manly this week.
“It’s been an amazing two weeks,” Wright said. “I think I am just going to go home and chill out and let it all sink in next.”
Lima was in awesome form on the final day, ripping from the Quarterfinals through to Final before coming up just short in the Final, repeating her performance from last season.
“I don’t know happened,” Lima said. “The surf was really bad and I just seemed to have bad luck. It was definitely tough out there but I’m happy with my performance.”
Despite the disappointing loss to Wright, the Brazilian’s runner-up rockets her into 5th place on the ASP Women’s World Tour ratings and places her well into the race for the 2008 ASP Women’s World Title.
“It’s really tough for me – I wanted to win, but it still feels pretty good because I’m moving up in the rankings just as the tour moves into South America,” Lima said.
Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, former ASP Women’s World Champion and current No. 1 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour ratings, took over the lead from reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, last Saturday, was in excellent form today, securing an impressive 8.67 out of a possible 10 in her Semifinal bout before succumbing to an ankle injury.
“On my last turn of the wave I injured my foot it’s very frustrating but it happens all the time,” Mulanovich said. “I’ll just try and get my foot better and think to myself this is not a bad injury. I’ll get back for the next event”.
While the ankle injury remains a concern, Mulanovich is pleased with her equal 3rd place finish in the Beachley Classic and will head into her hometown of Peru as the No. 1 seed on the ASP Women’s World Tour.
Amee Donohoe (AUS), 27, current No. 4 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, was in fine form this morning before succumbing to the wildcard Wright in the Semifinals.
“It’s frustrating in a heat with no waves,” Donohoe said. “You know you can get a score but nothing comes. I wanted to make the Finals and was so close, I’m pretty bummed.”
Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion and current No. 3 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, had her Beachley Classic run halted by Lima, but is still a major contender for the ASP Women’s World Title and will look forward to the next event in Peru.
“I’m looking forward to Peru – it’s one of my favorite events,” Beachley said. “I came second there last year and hopefully I can go one better, then coming into Hawaii, that’s always my strongest leg. I’m frustrated and disappointed I’ve been knocked out today, but it’s been amazing to see the crowd support and it was also amazing we could get the event of the ground. I would have loved nothing more than to win and have a fairytale ending to an emotional week.”

Curly no good but Vicco has been going off
Posted on October 13th, 2008 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports, Torquay.1-2 feet of crud at Curly at the mo. Water is warming up though. Had a cracker at Winki/ Bells in VIC yesterday with 3-4 foot waves, offshores, long period (14-16 secs) swell and small crowds at low tide-it felt like a cold superbank. Apparently Saturday was better. Best surf I’ve had in two months and that included 3 weeks in Bali/ Mentawais and a month in Sydney- kind of sad really. Water was cold at 14 but it didn’t stop a 4 hour session. Enjoy.
