Sunny Sunday
Posted on October 19th, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why, Surf Reports.Hello Friends,
Off to a slow start this morning. Got the cup of coffee near by. Have clambered up and pointed the camera at Dee Why. So, um, next decision… ah yes, write report. The short version: the only people in the water at Dee Why were paddling rescue skis. There was a clearly defined little line coming in, but that’s about all you could say for it. Very, very small.
The little windswell (1m @ 8s) has moved more to the south east than at this time yesterday. So I’m wondering if maybe there isn’t a little something up the beach where the exposure to the direction is better. Yesterday there were a few catchable sets from around the pole to Longy, but there were very long lulls (y’know the deal, where you start to wonder if the swell has died).
I actually caught one that was around chest high at around 1-ish there yesterday while adding my name to the list of Fat Bat riders. I have to say the board went well for me in those conditions. It felt like the best plan was to surf it in a skatey way rather than putting it over on the rail too aggressively. Weirdly, had one of the more fun lefts I’ve caught in the last month or so. Go figure.
The Fat Bat was at Longy thanks to Butts who joined a goodly crew from the forums for another RealSurf BBQ. I had to bail early from the event, but once again it left me reflecting on just what a damn good idea these get togethers are. Where else can you stand around talking about surfin’ the entire time? Food was good, beers were cold, vibe was superb. At one point Butts press-ganged a hapless passerby into picture taking duties. I expect the result may turn up on the forums before long.
Taking a look at the next few days, it would seem that today will be the best shot for anything at all until around late Wednesday-Thursday when there could be some southerly affected but good size south windswell according to the buoyweather model. WetSand.com’s swellwatch model gives a graphic representation of the same data. The Bureau is calling for the chance of rain on Weds-Thurs, so it doesn’t sound like it’ll be all time or anything.
Sheesh, I’ve been tapping away at this for over an hour… enough already Don.
Have yourself a top old day!
Flat again at Curly this morning
Posted on October 19th, 2008 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.I’m finally back from Vic to find 1 foot unridable mush again with no change since last month- this is depressing. Possibly a little 1-2 foot pulse this arvo. Bells and Winki in Vic have had a great month if you don’t mind it cold but it’s truly a world-class wave when it’s firing and with the right 4/3 rubber, booties and optional hoodie. Well worth the trip. Outlook is ordinary at Curly although we should see a break in the weather patterns around wednesday when a southerly arrives ripping up the current status quo of summer mush. Maybe some ridable waves by Friday. Enjoy.

The swell is smooth, weak and small at 1 – 2 feet from the east southeast. There is a light northwest breeze forecast to go northeast later. Low tide 0540 and high tide around 1215. Local barometer 1016 hpa, 92% humidity, 13 degrees C. Have a good weekend!
