Busy but waves

AFTERNOON UPDATE:
Got back from a pleasant session at Dee Why point to find that our server spat the dummy at roughly the moment I’d gone out the door. Sigh. Oh well, these things happen. Anyway, the waves at Dee Why were in the chest to head high plus range. The quality was around 3 out of 5 I’d say. But the fun scale was more like 4 out of 5 – for whatever that’s worth!

Dee Why point was a bit bumpy but relatively glassy and nice and sunny.

I took a few snaps but only one was particularly worth adding to today’s collection. There were bigger waves than that, however, I managed to bump a setting on the Olympus 1020 SW and so the other shots were just too soft.

From the MHL Sydney buoy it looks as though the swell is still SE. The average size is down just barely to right on 2 metres, while the power setting has crept up to a bit over 9 seconds. So I’d say there should be something to keep you entertained if you’re heading out for a late one.

… here’s this morning’s ramble…
Hello Friends,

0720: that looks like a fun one...

0720: that looks like a fun one...

Clear skies, abating winds, cold start, but were are waves for the rather substantial crowd in the water a little after 0700 this morning at Dee Why. Looks like a bit of a scratch to get into ‘em too. Nice head high sets would come in and you’d see bursts of paddling as people tried to make it on to the vertical face but a surprising number of them seemed to escape being ridden.

However, once people did make the drop, things looked pretty fun. Size ranged from chest to head high on the sets I saw while taking the pictures. Strangely, there didn’t seem to be too much going on with the point. Only a few people there because it seems for some bizarre reason that many of the sets are just going by the spot. Maybe I just didn’t watch long enough, because looking at the MHL buoy, the data is showing a touch over 2 metres from the Sydney favourable SE. Period is around the 9 second mark, so there’s definitely some energy to be had. Indeed, I reckon a fair number of spots should have surf this morning, particularly from around the Illawarra north.

The Bureau says that we’ll have S-SW winds this morning, but by the afternoon it should be around to the NE at around 10-15 kts. The swell generator is pushing up the coast from us and in concert with the dropping wind, we can expect to have a declining swell heading into the weekend – but it should still be surfable tomorrow morning when the Bureau is telling us we can expect light and variable winds ahead of an afternoon NE’r.

I hope to get out and about with a camera later, so, with luck, I might have a few more snaps to share at some point.

on thursday at 3 pm: from two to five-foot at our rivermouth point – long smooth, gentle, rather flagging lines, banking cleanly, in the clear, warm afternoon sun – sets every one to three minutes – i caught five waves in about 45 minutes, positioning west of the rivermouth point, aiming for the left across the rivermouth – my 14 colleagues were concentrating on the easier right that commences where the line parts, just west of the point – of course, a lot of the time i was pushed into the close-out in front of the point, but even there the rides were fairly easy – a new swell should resurge soon – yay – strong wind warning in effect at the mouth of the straits – winds southeasterly to 25 knots -**********- and what shall i give to him who has left his plough in midfurrow, or to him who has stopped the wheel of his winepress ? – k gibran ….

Fine, dry and coolish on the Central Coast this Friday morning.  The swell is smooth at 2 – 3 feet from the southeast.  There is a light to moderate south southwest breeze.  High tide 0540 and low tide around 1130.  Local barometer 1015 hpa, 92% humidity, 10 degrees C.  Have a good weekend!

Hi all,

A few more contributions have come in via the submission form. We’ve got a site in Devon, UK, a bodyboarder spot,

Talking it up in Devon (sharkbait.co.uk)

Sharkbait.co.uk

Sharkbait.co.uk

Submitter Dan writes: “I used to live on the southcoast in the UK and surf there from a young age – I say surf more like mushburgers, but was great fun growing up there. I used to check this website alot as a kid – a real community on here and because waves are few and far between – keeps everyone very very keen. Might not be what your after, but might give you 5 minutes of fun!! it has 2 links which are also good to filf (local shaper) www.filf.co.uk and a shop in devon (that does a daily surf report/cam) www.croyde-surf-cam.com

Bodyboarder haven (transitsurf.com)

transitsurf.com

transitsurf.com

Matt K sent us a link to what is presumably one of his favourite bodyboard sites. Transitsurf is your basic blog style site (y’know, like this one!). It covers off misc bits of news from around the world of bodyboarding. I think they’re pretty new and I’m not sure if they’ve quite figured out their focus. They invite user content, so maybe they’ll get a clearer purpose as they go along. Some damned impressive trailers on the site for a new bodyboarder epic called Roam II.

A WA original (srosurf.com)

SROsurf.com

SROsurf.com

There’s only one Marz and he’s been running the fiercely independent srosurf.com since forever. Long time ago he even graced our pages with a regular contribution (you’re always welcome back mate!). His reporting style is factual and no one quite has the Marz writing style. He covers off the metro, Mandurah and Margaret’s surf reports on a daily basis. If you’re in WA and you don’t know this one, hang your head in shame!

Neo vintage boards (surfysurfy.net)

SurfySurfy.net

SurfySurfy.net

When Peter sent this one in for consideration I thought it was just someone looking for free advertising. And maybe it is, after all it’s the blog for Moonlight Glassing Co. in Leucadia California. Anyhoo, I had a scroll down the long page and there are some real purty boards there pardner, so even though it’s a nekked ploy to get your hard-earned, I am a sucker for fine handcrafted boards that I will never in a million years be able to own and therefore I’m tossing in this link for my fellow old-school fans.

Gotta get at least one vid in, so here is one almost everybody’s seen. Yeah, I know, I know… so don’t watch it okay? But for those who’ve never seen it… or those who just want to enjoy again, here it is…
