Thar she goes

Hello Friends,

0915: not too impressive at Dee Why this morning.

0915: not too impressive at Dee Why this morning.

Pretty puny looking at Dee Why beach this morning. A few people in the water but I’d say it was as much because of the mild temps and sunny skies as it is about any surf prospects. Yesterday afternoon there were some quite tasty sets to be had up at Long Reef. At that stage we were still a few sets with a 10 sec period and average power setting was around the 9sec mark. Now it’s averaging 8 seconds and it’s pretty much coming from the east at about 1.5 metres. Not the ideal direction for either the south or north ends of the Dee Why to Longy stretch.

Wind is currently out of the NE at around 10 kts and it’s set to pick up to 20-25 kts this afternoon. That could push up something worth the effort at the semi-protected north corners we all get to know so well during summer.

Outlook for the week ahead is still looking pretty marginal for Sydney folk. At this stage the various models are all playing similar riffs on a theme of bugger all. About the most hopeful sign is for a little bit of windswell on Tuesday. Then it would seem we’ll have to wait until next weekend when a south change might come through.

I’m going to wander off to see if I can find anything of interest on the cams… I’ll report back if I turn up something. In the meantime, go well!

Weekend Editor’s picks 25-26 Oct 08

More link love with (barely) worthy cam links for Sunday from coastalwatch and swellnet, one from NZ, more tomorrow too in CA. Boardbag airline charges round up, Santa Barbara surf pics, daylight map,

Okay kids, what have we found for you this weekend? Well, the message from the wonderful world of cams is that it’s Sunday, it must be marginal. What a sorry collection we have. Just nothin’ much goin’ on. Coastalwatch’s Duranbah cam gets a guernsey for most interesting of the Qld options – again. CW’s best NSW cam seemed to be up at Lennox which looks small and windblown, but could have some fun ones out on the reefs… maybe…  and Swellnet.com’s most interesting NSW offering was their Coffs Harbour cam. Neither CW nor Swellnet seemed able to detect anything of interest in Vic, and about the only thing going on in WA, was visible on the CW Margs cam. Might be worth heading across the ditch to Waihi beach in NZ where the latest snap from surfcams.co.nz. Lookin’ damn small though it has to be said.

Here are a couple to check tomorrow morning when the Daylight map shows the sun reaching them again. Waves at da ‘bu in California where they have a little chest high swell. The coldwater classic is on again in Santa Cruz California and they’ve had heaps of good waves the lucky pups. Plus there should be more tomorrow too. You can see it on this cam (assuming the fog isn’t in!).

Are you heading overseas? Check out this handy table of boardbag charges pulled together by the mighty Surfline.

Every now and then I’m going to indulge myself by highlighting a link from the land where I learnt to surf. Callie Bowdish has created a bit of a collection of shots from around Santa Barbara from Jalama in the far north to Rincon in the south.

Okay, gotta finish up with a vid. Got onto this one via the New York Surf film festival site. It’s from a movie devoted to NYC surfing.
