IMBITUBA, Brazil (Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008) – Round 2 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro will not run at Praia da Vila in Imbituba today. Each and every one of the upcoming Round 2 heats will feature a Brazilian surfer and all 16 heats will be webcast live via www.aspworldtour.com. Another call on competition status will be made tomorrow at 7:30am.

Editor’s picks for 30 Oct 2008
Posted on October 30th, 2008 in Cool Picks.Kicking off with some link suggestions that have come in over the last few days (Avoca Boardriders, Samoa, Lennox longboarders, kitesurfing) along with a pointer to some fresh Butts shots on the forums. Also in this post, Broad Bench in the UK, South Taiwan
Dylan from Avoca boardriders sends us a link to the site with the following comment: “Avoca Boardriders Avoca Beach’s long running boardriding club. We meet monthly for competitions and have a lot of fun being who we are.” The site’s clean and gets the job done. I liked the vid! Check out Avoca Boardriders.
George (who files reports from his surf resort most weeks) volunteers his site for your amusement, adding “A great comprehensive web site featuring Sa’Moana Resort in Samoa. All the gen on what we’re about, what we do, what we offer, current and archived surf reports and heaps of pixs.” He speaks the truth, does George. I’d recommend having a squizz at the vid posted on the front page. Gives you an idea of how the waves look with regular people surfing them (glassy, fun size, not too intimidating looking), you have to go in about 3 minutes to find the surfin.
George also tips us about another club site, this time it’s for the Lennox Longboarders. Again, while it’s going to be most interesting to the people who belong to the group, the photo gallery has a fair few nice surfin’ shots mixed in with the happy snaps. Water looks nice…
Dee Why reporter and kiting fanatic Rob props his very excellent kiting site, kitesurfing.com.au (good score on the domain name front Rob). He modestly describes the site thusly: “Sydney area kitesurfing conditions forecast, report and photos.” I recommend it for the fantastic shots he gets from putting the camera up at the kite so that it shoots back down the lines toward him. There are some poster worthy shots in that lot.
Anyone who visits the site regularly or trawls around our forums, will know the mighty Butts. He started shooting surf pictures in a serious way fairly recently, and his quality is now right up there with the other top shooters. As far as I know he hasn’t organised a web site yet, but when he does, it should be a good one. To get a feel for the quality of his work, check out this picture-laden forum post he put up earlier this week.
Okay, wandering a bit further afield, I bookmarked this site awhile ago. It’s about surfing in south Taiwan and the little QuickTime video on the front page has definite curiousity value. Looks like it could get fun there on the right day…
CAUSE: Every year, some surf spots around the world are threatened in one way or another. In the case of Broad Bench in southern England, it’s a case of the military keeping surfers out of what the Access Broad Beach Association claim to be one of the country’s best spots. The photo gallery gives you an idea of how good it can get, and then maybe you can sign their online petition!
Grey, drippy start
Posted on October 29th, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why.LATE ARVO UPDATE:
Finally the skies have lifted adequately for me to see what’s going on from the crow’s nest atop the RealSurf wheelhouse. And what’s going on is only very slightly more than what my picture from this morning showed. There hasn’t been a tremendous improvement in the vital signs. The latest MHL trace is showing that the average period has risen maybe one second to 7s, but the size of the now SSE windswell is still only around a metre. Looking at the models, I can see no real reason to think that things will improve overnight. Thursday looks to be as woeful a prospect as today. Indeed, methinks we’re not likely to see much of anything in the Sydney region until next week. The virtual buoys model is showing a little long period south pulse for Sunday afternoon-ish. If it happens, that could translate into shoulder high sets at south facing beaches. The very long range models are showing a pretty intense system forming up in the Tasman around mid next week. Will be interesting what the run of models shows tomorrow on that one.
Have yourself a top old evening!
Hello Friends,
Can’t see the ocean yet… so no eyewitness report for the time being. I’ll go out with the camera soon and of course will report back on anything of interest. In the meantime what one can say is that the MHL buoy shows that yesterday’s tasty little pulse has rolled off from a couple metres at 8-10 sec, to a metre at 6 seconds from the SE. Throw in a steady 12-16kts of SE wind and the rain… Well, if that doesn’t turn out to mean mostly choppy little junk, I’ll be putting a little salt and pepper on my headgear and getting out the knife and fork.
Back later this morning with more thoughts…
Sea-level rise – keep it quiet!
Posted on October 29th, 2008 in Environment, News Stories, Top stories. The ABC’s website is currently running a story about a climate change scientist who says he’s had the hard word put on him by real estate agents. Why? Apparently they’re annoyed by Professor Andrew Pitman pointing out that sea-level rises are going to be a bit of a problem for beachfront properties. They may not appreciate this story in today’s SMH entitled, Sea-level rise threat to coast either!

Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro
Stop No. 10 of 11 on the 2008 ASP World Tour
Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil
Oct. 28-Nov. 5, 2008
IMBITUBA, Brazil (Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008) –With a scoreline boasting the day’s highest heat total and single wave score (a 17.17 and 9.50 respectively) ASP World Tour rookie Jordy Smith (ZAF) looked like he would be collecting top honors on Day 1 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro. Two interference calls later, Smith had a 0.00 to show for his standout performance in Imbituba’s five foot waves today.
Taking the heat instead was fellow rookie and Spanish Basque surfer Aritz Aranburu. Aranburu also blitzed, putting up an 8.50 early and finishing the heat with 16.00 points to finish ahead of wildcard Simao Romao (BRA) and Smith.
“It was a difficult heat, I started well with an 8.50 score but Jordy also got really good waves,” Aranburu says. “Then in the last three minutes a small wave came toward me, and I knew that I need to get a big score, so I started paddling for the wave. I was in the best position but Jordy started paddling too, so the judges give him interference.”
According to ASP Head Judge Perry Hatchett: “At the initial point of take-off, the wave was a superior left , with white (Aranburu) in position to take it. Red (Smith) was on the wrong side of the peak trying to go right on the close-out with no scoring potential so the interference was called on red (Smith).”
Frustrated, Smith then took off on a wave Romao had priority on, suffered another interference and lost both his scores.Smith, who currently sits 22nd on the ratings, has yet to advance past Round 4 this year. He will meet Pedro Henrique in Round 2.
ASP World Tour No. 3 Bede Durbidge (AUS) won a tight Heat over former ASP World Tour and replacement surfer Raioni Monteiro (BRA) and Damien Hobgood (USA) to advance straight to Round 3 today. Durbidge scored a 9.00 and 6.33 for a 15.33 heat total.
“It was a fun wave, I made a couple of turns and a good air in the end,” Durbidge said of his 9.00 ride. “The waves are so fun. I’m enjoying myself and I really want to win but I need to get through more heats, so I’ll be surfing one heat at a time and trying my best.”
World No. 2 and the 2005 winner of the event Taj Burrow (AUS) also advanced today. With newly crowned nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) not competing, Burrow is the No. 1 seed in the event.
“From what I have seen so far, all the local surfers are surfing really good and being the top seed I have to surf against the locals,” Burrow said. “It’s not easy, but I’m really looking to make heats and to try to win the event.”
Five of the 20 Brazilian surfers competing in the Hang Loose Pro won their heats today. Replacement surfer Hizunome Bettero (BRA), who is currently in a position to qualify for the Dream Tour next year if he can maintain his No. 13 rating on the ASP World Qualifying Series through Hawaii, was the highest scoring of the Brazilian contingent.
“I was pretty stoked to be invited to compete in this event as a wildcard,” Bettero said. “I’m surfing with no pressure, enjoying myself and I will try to show my best surfing. Competing here is a dream because I usually see these guys on TV and in magazines. I hope to be on the ASP World Tour next year but I need to get a good result in Hawaii this year.”
Also surfing well today was Brazil’s Leonardo Neves. He beat Tom Whitaker (AUS) and Henrique to earn a Round 3 berth today.
“Getting it right in the first heat is very important and now I have time to watch the comp and train more,” Neves said. “The swell arrived today and I’m pretty stoked with this result.”
Neves is currently rated 39th on the ASP World Tour and will need huge results in the last two events of the year to requalify for the 2009 ASP World Tour.
“I’m happy to be back here in Vila Beach,” Neves said. “I remember last year that I needed a good result, like this year, and I got it, so that is giving me a lot of motivation. This comp is very important for all Brazilians on the ASP World Tour.”
Also avoiding 33rd place results they could not afford were Dan Ross (AUS) – World No. 42, Mick Campbell (AUS) – World No. 28 and Miky Picon (FRA) – World No. 26. Only the Top 27 surfers on the ASP World Tour requalify for the following year’s tour.
Chris Ward (USA) missed his Round 1 heat today due to Visa complications. He will surf in Round 2. A call on Round 2 will be made tomorrow morning at 7:30am.
