(Maroubra Beach, NSW – Tuesday, 4 November 2008): Professional surfer Phil Macdonald is putting a spin on the traditional surfing contest with his Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage coming to Cronulla this weekend.

After being postponed during September due to gruesome weather and surf conditions, Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage is back with the hottest junior competitors from south of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, in the north, to Kiama in the south.

Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage provides an innovative and fresh approach to the traditional junior surfing competition in an effort to unearth the new wave of Australian surfing talent – and with the calibre of the competitors on hand, the action is sure to be electric.

Unlike other surfing competitions, Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage will allow competitors (16 years and under) to surf three heats each without elimination instead of the traditional cutthroat format.

“The Teenage Rampage was a concept that was developed to promote confidence, experience and fun in all levels of junior surfing, from beginner to champion,” said Macdonald.

“This event is more focused on the kids building confidence over the weekend as there is a greater focus on a bonus points and leader board system.”

Unlike the run of the mill surfing competition, each surfer’s two highest scoring rides from each heat will be added together, along with bonus points awarded according to the position the competitor finishes in each heat.

The six best-placed surfers in the each division will progress to their division final.

“I really believe that every kid deserves a chance and the support not matter how good a surfer you are,” Macdonald continued.

“Surfing has given me an amazing life and I want to show kids how surfing can be a very positive thing in their life whether it is just keeping them out of trouble or making a career.”

The event, which is the last Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage event staged throughout the year, is a qualifying event for the Ocean & Earth International Teenage Rampage to be held at Curl Curl in December.
Having charged up and down the east coast of Australia over 2008, the Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage format has been a success with the competitors and parents alike.

“The feedback has been so good and the kids got so much out of it that Ocean & Earth has decided to form a Teenage Rampage series up the east coast of NSW, so every kid gets a chance at qualifying for the Teenage Rampage international at the end of the year.”

Competition starts at 8am on both days for each of the four divisions – girls and boys 13 and under and girls and boys 16 and under.

There will also be a host of beach activities and challenges with great prizes taking place over the weekend so be sure to get down to Cronulla Beach this weekend.

Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage is proudly supported by Vodafone, Red Bull, Cool Shoe Corporation, Podsurf.TV, Fluid Adventures, Byrne Surfboards and Surfing NSW.
