Quiet on the eastern front

Hello Friends,

0715: proof that you can (sort of) catch something if you're patient this morning.

0715: proof that you can (sort of) catch something if you

Fairly minimal activity at Dee Why this morning. There was a one person futzing around in the soft and junky  little shories up from the club. Much too tiny for the point to be a factor and I’d say if you found something into the waist high range along the beach, you’d be going very well indeed.

Sydney’s marine forecast is calling for light and variable winds of 5-10 kts this morning, swinging E-SE later. As things get started, the MHL buoy is showing about a metre of 8 sec period SE windswell. The Bureau says we can expect the already paltry surf conditions to decline even more as the day goes along.

Outlook for tomorrow is a repeat of the light and variable deal, followed by a swing to 10-15kts of NE’r in the afternoon. But the swell outlook is pretty ordinary. The Bureau’s calling for 1-2 metres of SE-NE swell. Kinda vague. The models aren’t showing a great deal for us to look forward to, but they do seem to suggest that from tomorrow it will build very slightly along much of the east coast. Here’s hoping it’ll be enough to give us something into the barely surfable range from about Weds on in our region.

On other matters, you’ll find that I’ve moved the furniture around a little over the weekend and we have a new addition to the centre column (just below the poll). It’s still fairly beta, but the general idea is to give us a spot to highlight the various cool surf links we’ve turned up recently. The one thing I can promise is that this section will continue to evolve, so feel free to send me your thoughts and comments.

Have yourself a top old day!

LNT: The Goat’s special mixture

Posted on November 10th, 2008 in Late night tunes.

We asked the Goat (aka Roger) to come up with a list of a few tunes he likes and whadya know, they’re as eclectic and wide-ranging as his good self.

The first tune he sent me was Liza Minelli’s showstopper Life is a cabaret, from the famous Bob Fosse movie. Check it out and remind yourself how much Liza channelled her mum’s sublime voice.

And now for something completely different… La vie en rose …by Louis Armstrong. Yeah Satchmo! Great little flourish at the end too.

I reckon Carlos Santana is perfect for watching surfin’ movies. The Goat picked a couple from the fret supremo’s vast repertoire. First up is the effortless and sweetly uplifting Samba pa ti from Live in Mexico

Okay, if you had to pick the Santana number it’d be either Black Magic Woman, or this, the mighty Oye Como Va.

Now for a couple classics from the Blues Brothers… first up, is Jailhouse Rock, which seems to have been pirated from a Japanese video…

And the Goat wraps up his first late night tunes with the supremely goofy Rawhide

Anaemic…

Posted on November 10th, 2008 in Dee Why.

Well, it’s not flat but pretty lackluster this morning.

Earlier there were a few lines at the Point but those have all but faded and up the beach it’s not much better. Longy seems to have the best conditions, but even there it’s tiny.  Cheers, Rob

Surfin’ photography #1

Posted on November 10th, 2008 in Cool Picks, Editor's picks.

If there’s one category of editor’s choice links I’m highly likely to revisit, it’ll be surfing photographers. So let’s kick off with a round up that includes David Pu’u, wozthatyou, aquabumps, waveriders gallery, Sean Davey, Hugh Davis and Andrew Shield.

We surfers have an insatiable appetite for pictures of waves, and more than that, for picture of ourselves on waves! There are thousands of keen shooters all over the world trying to make a crust shooting surf pictures. But it isn’t easy. You’ve gotta pay your dues the way a friend of mine from many years ago, Dave Pu’u has. Check out the wave and surfing galleries on Dave’s site and you’ll see this is one guy who has the chops.

Just starting out in the toughest surf photography game of all, frequent RealSurf contributor Doug McFarlane is having a go at earning a living from selling pictures to the world’s leading tightwads – surfers! His Northern Beaches based Wozthatyou.com has become pretty well known already.

Eugene Tan has been documenting not only the surf but the culture of his native Bondi on his long-running aquabumps site. Uge is an extremely talented shooter, but his particular forte is the water shot. He’s so good at it, that he can earn a living selling his stunning images from his very own gallery at the northern end of the beach. Should be on every Sydney surfer’s bookmark list. A class act from top to bottom.

Waveriders Gallery is kind of doing the sort of stuff Eugene is, but they’ve got a whole collection of talented lensmen who contribute to the project. Based in San Diego, California, their list includes lots of well known surf photographers (Dave Pu’u and Sean Davey are among them!)

Speaking of Sean Davey, here’s a cat with the eye. Apart from perfectly exposed, tack sharp shots of the usual suspects and the usual spots, Davey also shows that he can think outside of the photographic box with his arresting closeup work. I guarantee that you’ll recognize a few of the images on his site from the mags.

Hugh Davis knows a thing or two about taking a nice surfin’ snap. He’s also not half bad at surfing scenics either. And so, for that matter is Andrew Shield. His shots of not a drop out of place gold coast perfection are breathtaking.

Here’s some eye-candy that also links to these sites…
