Hello Friends,

AFTERNOON UPDATE: Seems as though there’s a little more activity than this morning. Went by Manly around 2-ish and while there wasn’t much from about North Steyne south, up toward Queensy there were a few junky little onshore things to splash around in. Quality was strictly ordinary it has to be said, but you could sort of bog along on the little waist to chest high sections that lurched up weakly from time to time.

1400 and there were a one or two little ones flopping in...

Around the corner at south Curly, the situation seemed to be much the same. A bit smaller I’d say, but looking up the beach toward the north end, it looked as though there might be a touch more size. Not many people in the water and the waves didn’t look too easy to get into. But it’s warm and sunny and the water looks nice, so why wouldn’t ya if you could?

Sad to say, looks pretty ordinary down at Dee Why this morning. Nothing much has changed over the last 36 hours. The direction has moved a little closer to the east, but the size (around a metre) and the period (about 8 sec) are pretty much where they’ve been since day before yesterday.

This morning’s thoughts…

It looks to be pretty much the same up and down the NSW coast – with the exception of the Byron Bay buoy. Thanks to strong SSE winds, it’s showing 3 metres at 8 sec from the south. But if you’re dreaming of long walls at the Pass, put it out of your mind. A squizz at the Coastalwatch cam shows that little of the energy is getting into the place. The plan seems to be to head up to the Goldie where there are some nice looking waves to be had at D’bah and even some small ones getting around into Snapper.

WRL cam atop Flight Deck shows little sign of energy at Sth Narra.

Outlook today is for light and variable winds this morning in the Sydney region. It’ll pick up a bit and swing NE later. We could see a small improvement to the size, but it’ll be at places with the most exposure to the wind.

The computer models are suggesting that we’ll settle into an easterly windswell, with light NE wind pattern over the next few days. With luck, this will mean we can get in the water for a little something as it gradually builds up a steady supply of small NE waves. Our next south swell could arrive over the weekend, but the interpretations of the data are varying across the models. Wetsand.com’s new swellwatch modelling tool shows it filling in from around midday on Sunday and lasting into Monday – but with a heap of onshore wind. Protected corners are go!

Looking to skive off for a bit? You could plug in the earbuds and have a listen to some of the Goat’s fave tunes…

Go well!

Girls grace Jim Beam Surftag Series this weekend at Curl Curl

Posted on November 11th, 2008 in Contests, News Stories, Surf News, Top stories.

The Jim Beam  Surftag has spread its wings in 2008, with the heralding of the Jim Beam  Women’s Surftag to take place this weekend.

As the newest event  on the Jim Beam Surftag Series, this weekend’s  event will see the premier women’s boardriding clubs in NSW, ranging from  Newcastle in the north to Wollongong in the south, ready to battle it out

With ten teams jam packed with the female professional surfing  stars of the future and current ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS)  the action is sure to be electric as  local pride is put to the test at Curl Curl.

Unlike conventional surfing contests  which play upon individual results, the Jim Beam Women’s Surftag is a teams  based event drawing upon the performances of five surfers per  team.

Add bonus points and a prize purse  of $2500 and you have a perfect recipe for some  innovative and passionate surfing, whilst fostering confidence and comradary  amongst the girls.

One such  competitor looking forward to this weekend is current surfing, modelling and  lifestyle starlet Paige Houden (Fairlight, NSW) who’ll be donning the  competitive rash vest.

“It’s such a good initiative from Jim Beam to bring the tag-team format to women’s  surfing,” Houden said.

“I’m stoked to be home for this  event and being able to hang out with all the girls, have fun and enjoy the  day,” she added.

Having graced the competitive junior  circuit, Houden now travels the world promoting the importance of female surfing.

“It can be intimidating for girls  surfing in general, but to bring together a host of the best female surfers  competing together is so positive for female surfing,” Houden admitted.

“An event like this will help to  build confidence for all girls associated and definitely raise the profile of  the Series.”

Playing upon the passion and tribal  nature of surfing, the Jim Beam Women’s Surftag also sees female boardrider clubs from around the state competing against each other in a team environment  – something not regularly seen in surfing.

“Boardrider clubs are  the base of the surfing landscape, to be able to compete in a team environment  with all the girls is awesome in a predominantly individual sport,” Houden stated.

With $2500 up for grabs and the possibility of surfing against  former ASP World Champion Chelsea Hedges (Gold Coast, QLD), who has been asked  to compete with Avalon, this weekend is gearing up to be a one not to be  missed.

Steve Harrison, Global Surftag Managing Director, is over  the moon about the prospect this weekend and the growth of the Series as a  whole.

“Very happy that Jim Beam have decided to expand the  series,” Harrison said.

“This year’s series is inclusive of  women and aims at reaching the girls to reflect the growing number of female  surfers out in the line up.”

Elouera Beach, NSW –- Jarrod Campbell (Cronulla, NSW) and Skye Burgess (Lake Heights, NSW) blew apart Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage at Elouera, taking the blue ribbon division’s (16 years and under) in style.

Both recording dominant performances throughout the entire event, Campbell and Burgess were rewarded for their excellent surfing – claiming the prestigious crown.

In a final, which featured some of the country’s hottest junior surfing talent, Campbell was the star of the show, demolishing the shifting peaks at Elouera.

“I’m so stoked, “ Campbell said after his victory in the 16 years and under division.

“This is definitely my best result to date,” he added.

Defeating Max Ayshford (Matraville, NSW), Kurt Kiggins (Cronulla, NSW) and Jesse Horner (Cronulla, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Campbell was in dynamic form in an all-star shootout.
“Everyone was surfing so good,” Campbell admitted.

“The standard was so high throughout the entire event and the final was no different.”

Using a blistering backhand arsenal, Campbell accrued a total heat score of 14.40 (out of a possible 20), which was accented by a number of gouging turns and vertical re-entry’s.

Revelling in the local conditions, a break which he surfs every day, Campbell drew upon local knowledge to see him through.

“I feel really comfortable out here,” he said.

“Having an awesome competition like this at home is such a good thing, I’m that stoked that I’ve managed to take home the title.”

Contrasting other surfing competitions, Macca’s Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage saw the hottest junior competitors from south of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, in the north, to Kiama in the south, surfing three heats each without elimination.

In the 16 years and under girls division it was and Skye Burgess (Lake Heights, NSW) who shone the brightest, posting a superb display of surfing.

Saving her best performance for last, Burgess blew the final apart, accruing a massive heat total of 15.73 (out of a possible 20) – leaving her fellow finalists requiring a combination of scores to steal her crown.

“I’m over the moon,” Burgess said.

“I felt really comfortable out there and am extremely happy with this result.”

Joining Burgess in the final was Rachel Campbell (Stanwell Park, NSW), April Charles (Woolooware, NSW) and Renee Savas (Caringbah, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Having had an already stellar 2008, Burgess’ performance today added another crown to the ever-growing trophy cabinet at the Burgess residence.

“This year has been a really good one for so far,” Burgess said reflectively.

“I’ve had a number of wins and minor placings and today’s result gives me a lot of confidence going into next year,” she admitted.

In the 13 years and under boys division Chris Robertson (Cronulla, NSW) was the champion, whilst in the girls division it was Tayla Ayshford (Matraville, NSW) who finished on top of the field.

The event, which is the last Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage event staged throughout the year, acts as a qualifying event for the Ocean & Earth International Teenage Rampage to be held at Curl Curl in December.

Printpoint Queensland Masters Surfing Circuit

November 8-9, North Stradbroke Island.

SURFING’s elder statesmen proved they can still mix it in the wave stakes going toe-to-toe for prestigious state crowns at the third and final stop of the Printpoint Queensland Masters Surfing Circuit at North Stradbroke Island.

Main Beach provided the ideal backdrop for the one-day tournament with the state’s hottest masters unleashing some big moves in highly contestable 3ft wedgy beach break conditions.

For a third year running, a 60-strong field made the crossing to battle it out across six separate divisions for elusive state titles. The 17 surfers, who will represent Queensland at the Australian Open Surfmasters in ‘09, were also determined.

In a tightly-contested senior men’s (over 28) final, Currumbin gun Mark ‘Richo’ Richardson out-duelled Sunshine Coast surfer Peter Boyd (Moffat Beach) to claim a hat trick of round wins and a Queensland title.

In a low-scoring final, Richardson made the most of an early wave score (6.17) to dominate proceedings.

Despite a late charge by Boyd, Richardson held his nerve to net a heat-high 7.67 ride in the final minute of the final.

The perennial master’s champion finishing on a two-wave combined total of 13.84 (out of a possible 20) to Boyd’s 9.97. The Gold Coast pairing of Simon Massey and Michael Betts finishing in third and fourth respectively.

Richardson was beaten by Moffat Beach ace Boyd in the over 35 men’s final but still gained enough points to earn the series title.

The progressive surfing action continued in the 0/40’s with Currumbin Waters Chris Brooks capping off his 2008 campaign in style, defeating Nick Ryan (Mermaid Beach), Terry Landsberg (Currumundi) and David Masters (Mooloolaba) to seal a prestigious state crown.

Gold Coast surfers continued to feature in the O/45’s with Palm Beach surfer Mark Traucnieks dusting fellow Gold Coaster Andrew Harris (Currumbin), Sunshine Coast surfer Paul Fisher (Buderim) and Stradbroke Island local Criag Frampton to stitch up his second round win of the year as well as a state crown.

Despite his fourth placing, Frampton surfed away with Tooheys Extra Dry ‘Wave of the Weekend” for the tournament’s highest individual wave score, a near perfect 9.67 out of a possible 10.

In the 0/55 men’s final, Gold Coast surfing legend Paul Neilsen (Burleigh) surfed away with winner’s trophy, unleashing a lethal attack of forehand moves. Nielsen was awarded the state title after three consecutive wins.

Marcoola’s Neville Williams won the 0/50 final as well as the overall state title.

The exclusive three-event series continues to set the benchmark for surfers aspiring to a national master’s title. Divisions include senior men (0/28), O/35, O/40, 0/45, O/50 and O/55.

Flat now but waves by this arvo

Posted on November 11th, 2008 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.

It’s flat right now but we should have waves this arvo but with onshore winds.  Tomorrow it should clean up and be around 3 feet from the east with north to ENE winds so you will need to find protection or get in early- keep an eye on tides for the best waves.  Should be waves all week from this arvo so enjoy.

At last………..

Posted on November 11th, 2008 in Sunshine Coast.

The winds were blowing SW early,so if you were up around the 5am mark there were some fun clean waves about the coast this morning.Ann Street on the southern end of the coast was about head high on the sets and only around 6 guys out.Up the beach towards Curri’s conditions were smaller. Winds are predicted to go  SE later and reach up to 30knots so your best for a afternoon wave will be at Noosa’s outer points, Alex or Mooloolaba.Weather wise a grey old day but who cares there are some waves to be had.

Good morning, it’s really nice in the water today so even though the surf is tiny and garbage, it’s well worth a swim! should be waves by tonight though!!

Not Today.

Still not much on offer at the city beaches other than cafes, restaurants and star spotting. However there is a fun shore break in the southern corner of Bondi if your body needs an exfoliating scrub.
