Sunny skies early

Hello Friends,

Midday update. Well, the wind is here and out of the WNW at 15-20 kts around midday. Swell has gone more around to the east and has dropped to around a metre at sea with an average period in the 8 second range. Had a squizz at Collaroy-Narrabeen stretch and there are little waves from as far south as Flight Deck all the way up to Northy. Wind is offshore and the waves are mostly TOADs (take-off-and-die), but there would be some moments of coverage I’d think for those who don’t mind pulling in.

Here’s what I wrote earlier…

Well, I thought we might have the odd shoulder high set around this morning, and so it has come to pass – at Dee Why anyway!

The wind was comparatively light at the start of the day, but it’s set to ramp up into the 20-25 kt range from the NW this morning. As the day goes along it should move around to the WSW and push up to 25-33 kts.

As of this writing, the MHL buoy off Sydney shows that the swell has dropped almost a metre since yesterday afternoon’s peak. It’s now averaging around 1.5 metres from the SE. The reason we still have some shoulder to head high sets at places that take the swell direction is down to the 10 second average period. It looks as though that could drop during the day though because the Eden buoy has fallen to 8 seconds overnight.

What with the forecast wind and prospect of dropping swell, you’d have to say that getting out early is definitely the go.

The outlook for tomorrow is not currently too promising. Basically we’re in for lots of wind and marginal to near flat surf. However, the models are still calling for south swell to start filling in to our stretch of coast from late on Monday. With luck it’ll be pretty fun size (head high plus at exposed spots) come Tuesday morning with favourable SSW winds. Definitely my pick day for the coming week.
