There’s a really fun little rip bowl happening at MV this morning, not sure how it’ll be when the tide changes but from what i sampled this morning, it’s well worth getting out there!

Late morning empty.

Went for a sanity break at Longy this morning. Lots of people in the parking lot and Matt and the team from Manly Surf School were putting smiles on dials up and down the beach. I wandered down for a look at shitrock, but it wasn’t really worth the effort, so I paddled over to the bombies and hung around there for the shoulder to head high sets. They were getting further apart the whole time I was in the water and the NE’r was starting to build up too. But by the time I left around noon,  the conditions were still okay.

0730: glassy little peeler amongst the shutdowns

Mild and nearly calm as the first early risers get out of the water and head to work. The tide peaked at 730 and as it drops, there should continue to be a few waves around. However, looking down the coast at the buoys to the south of us, it would seem that we can expect it to hold at around this size through the day. Fortunately there seems to be a little more east to the direction, so that should open up a few more opportunities.

We’re set for NE winds today. The Bureau says 13-18 kts at first, then building to 20-30 kts this afternoon.

We’re set for sunny periods through this afternoon, when there is a possiblity of showers and thunderstorms developing.

Not perfect, not bad.

Some decent swell around the traps this morning but the conditions seem to be messing it up a touch. Bronte and Tama reefs are the cleanest providing a fun right and left respectively. Maccas is on a bank holiday. Bondi getting a good chunk of swell, some decent bank action and a crew of only about 100.

Grey start but waves still

1020ish and a set comes through the inside at Longy...

Just ducked out to run an errand and had a look at the situation mid-morning. Pick spot seemed to be an inconsistent Longy. But there would be waves for desperates along the entire Dee Why stretch and ditto north from about Marquesas to Northy.

Skies are grey and our swell has weakened overnight from around four metres on average yesterday to around 2.5 metres this morning. The period is still sitting on 10 seconds and it’s still dead south. Wind at around 0800 was out of the ESE but only lightly so. What this meant for Dee Why was somewhat junky and inconsistent conditions. Set waves along the beach are head high plus, but they’re shutting down with great regularity. The point is less consistent and smaller and as usual, it really wants a touch of east in the swell to get working. There are some chest high sets coming through for the crew, but overall it’s definitely smaller than the beach.

The Bureau expects the wind to swing around through the eastern quarters and to pick up from the NE and get to 13-18 kts. The swell should hang in there through the day, and I’m hopeful that it’ll be around for us again tomorrow. The NE wind should, one hopes, offer improvement for the north corners.

GOVERNMENT EXTENDS RIP CURL PRO SUPPORT UNTIL 2011

The Rip Curl Pro Surf & Music Festival has been granted funding for a further three years by the Victorian Government leading up to the 50^thanniversary in 2011 the Premier John Brumby announced yesterday at Bells Beach.

Mr Brumby and the Sports and Recreation Minister, James Merlino met with two-time World Champion and Rip Curl Pro Contest Director Damien Hardman at Bells Beach today to make the announcement.

“The Rip Curl Pro is a major draw card on a dynamic calendar of major events including the Melbourne Grand Prix, Australian Open and the AFL Grand Final,” Mr Brumby said.

“That’s why I am delighted to announce that the Victorian Government will support the Rip Curl Pro for a further three years, delivering on our commitment to building on Victoria’s world-class major events.”

Mr Merlino congratulated event organisers for supporting both men’s and women’s surfing at the annual Rip Curl Pro Surf & Music Festival. 

“It creates an exciting platform to celebrate excellence in sport and attracts strong tourism to the region,” Merlino said.

Rip Curl Group Advertising and Marketing Chairman Neil Ridgway said Rip Curl was excited to extend its relationship with Victoria for a further three years and to have the world’s most prestigious surfing contest sit in the Victorian ‘Hallmark Events’ program sanctioned the Rip Curl Pro as elite. 

“This partnership helps to cement both men’s and women’s professional surfing for the next three years and that is very important for both ASP world tours. Rip Curl sees surfers as equal no matter what their gender and that attitude is epitomized in the Rip Curl Pro.”

Surfing Victoria Rip Curl Pro Event Director Max Wells welcomed the announcement. 

“The Rip Curl Pro is an amazing event that is held in very high regard by our surfers worldwide, so on behalf of Surfing Victoria, I wish to express our appreciation of the long term and continuing support of our iconic event by the Victorian Government,” Mr Wells said.
