Sunny skies, little waves

Posted on December 2nd, 2008 in Big Picture, Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Dee Why beach still showing a little something.

Dee Why beach still showing a little something.

Tiny days are coming… but they aren’t quite here yet as reporter Rob has already noted. I was able to grab a snap of a little peak folding into Dee Why at aroun 0720. It seemed to be quite a wait between people catching waves though.  No wind to speak of, so it’s glassy and the sunny skies make for a pretty picture even if the waves are marginal and getting steadily more so.

The Bureau says the wind will be lightly out of the southerly quarters in the morning, before giving way to afternoon seabreezes from the NE. We’re still without the Sydney MHL buoy, but the Bureau’s call for 1-1.5 metre s to se windswell fits with what we’re seeing. The sets I saw had a period of around 8-9 seconds, and that’s pretty similar to what the Batemans Bay buoy is reporting.

The computer models are calling for very small to flat conditions across the next week for the Sydney region. It looks to me as though you’ll need to pull out your favourite tiny conditions gear. If you’re a bit light on in that department, you should consider dropping by the first ever RS Demo Day at Dee Why to Longy stretch. The good folk from GSI will have close to a dozen different brands for anyone to try out. Naturally there’ll be a good selection of mals and fishes from the likes of McTavish, 7S and NSP. Conditions look set to be ideal for beginners (and people looking to get something suitable for a beginner!) to try out a fun board, a softboard or a starter mal.

Have yourself a top old day and go well with your plans!

THIS SUNDAY: Paddle out for the little Penguins

Posted on December 2nd, 2008 in Good causes, Top stories.

Did you know that there are plans for a conference centre redevelopment right next to the Manly Little Penguin colony? The Australian Institute of Police Management intends to undertake just such a project adjacent to the Manly Little Penguin colony’s nesting location.

To help protect the Little Penguins by raising awareness, there’s going to be a Paddle out for Little Penguins at 1030 am Sunday 7 December (Ocean Care Day) at South Steyne. Organisers are hoping to get at least 50 surfers in the water to form a giant Little Penguin off South Steyne. At the same time, kids are invited to make a statement by building their own Little Penguin sand sculptures at South Steyne.

Surfers who’d like to join in the giant Little Penguin paddle out, should register with the organisers by clicking here.

Mona Vale

Posted on December 2nd, 2008 in Mona Vale.

The waves are pretty dam average this morning. It’s about a foot or two, messy and closing out, the only thing MV has going for it today is the high tide, but even that probably won’t do it many favours, yeeeeww

Dee Why — swell fading but not gone…

Posted on December 2nd, 2008 in Dee Why.

Despite the forecasts, the swell continues to hang around another day, but it’s dropped from y’day.

What a wild day it was Monday. Started off pumping at the Point, by mid morning has faded, then by mid afternoon that nor’wester kicked in, it all smoothed out and the swell started pumping again right up til about dark. There were some folks getting some great cover up and down the beach all day but it was shifty and the big ones mostly closing out. Still, the conditions were great, even if the banks weren’t.

Hard to say what it’ll do today. Nobody on the Point at 0700 but crew of about 20 up the middle at Dee Why getting a couple nice ones now and again.  Sets in the chest to head high vicinity.

Forecast is for the southerly to go nor’east later in the day and for the swell to drop. High temperature forecast is for 26 but it’s already 25 here in Dee Why at 0700… Cheers,  Rob

Fine, dry and warm on the Central Coast this Tuesday morning.  The swell is smooth and smaller at 1 – 3 feet from the southeast.  There is no breeze at the moment but forecast to go southeast then northwest then northeast later.  Low tide 0500 and high tide around 1135.  Local barometer 1008 hpa, 92% humidity, 19 degrees C.  Have a good one.

Samoa report for week 48 of 2008 from Sa’Moana Resort

Posted on December 2nd, 2008 in Surf Reports.

WEEKLY   REPORTS  for    2008

Report No:   48-08

Period:           Monday 24th to Sunday 30th November 2008

Monday.  High tide 4:37am and 4:45pm.  There was a new East push in the swell so the crew hit Village Lefts for an early. It was super clean with overhead sets allowing for a few racy barrels or a few top turns. Arvo session at Pebbles as the SE wind had come up during the day where the waves were short, steep and intense which suited our body boarding guests who loved the consistent barrels. Most of the stand up surfers pulled the back peak which had longer more playful walls.

Tuesday. High tide 5:15am and 5:21pm.  Two boat trips today with the first boat to Wakas which was amazingly uncrowded with some super fun head high waves. It was glassy and sunny so guests were stoked. The other boat stopped at Special K and got some fun head high rights. The sets were pretty good but you had to pick them as it was a bit sectiony. Still everyone was happy with the mornings sessions.

Wednesday.  High tide 5:52am and 5:56pm.  One group went over to the North side early and surfed The Rock which was clean and about head high with a reasonable shape allowing 2 or 3 turns per wave and fun with no one else out. The other group did a boat trip to Wakas and had a fun session which was smaller than yesterday but still holding a nice shape. It was a bit crowded with 15 surfers in the water, but there were still plenty of waves to go round. Some of the guests surfed out at Resorts late arvo. It was up to head high, clean and option of lefts or rights.

Thursday.  High tide 6:28am and6:32pm.  Out on the boat with another early start and once again no wind. It was hard to go past Special K which had some fun little rights running down the reef. It was lining up well and with only 4 guys in the water there plenty of waves to go around. Another arvo session at Resorts in clean conditions. The swell picked up with the incoming tide so the sets were pretty good.

Friday.   High Tide 7:03am and 7:09pm.  Another dawn patrol back to Special K showed the swell was a bit bigger than yesterday with sets a bit over head high. Still lined up well and a few barrels along with long walls. No wind so another clean session for about 4 hours.

Saturday. High tide  7:40am. With the majority of our guests leaving today they didn’t do a boat trip as conditions at Resorts looked great with head high peaks and no wind.

Sunday. High tide 8:18 am. Light east winds put a slight ripple across the small shoulder high waves out front at the Resorts. Still fun if you picked the right one.
