Calling all beachcombers

Very, very tiny at Dee Why this morning

Hello Friends,

Looks like a fine morning to go for a stroll along the strand to see what’s washed in on the tide overnight. Or, if you have a stand up paddleboard, you could go for a wander across the millpond stillness before the wind arrives.

The Sydney MHL buoy is still offline, but from the look of things, I’d say the Bureau’s call for a metre of NE windswell looks about right. Period is in the 6 second range, so not only is it incredibly small, it’s also incredibly weak.

Winds are due to shift from the present NW around to the NE this morning ahead of a weak SE change of 15-20 kts later this afternoon. If you haven’t already twigged, it’s also going to be a warm one with a high of 32 on the coast grading to inland highs of up to 36. Yikes!

Tomorrow’s outlook is for a shower or two and a high of 24 and I reckon that despite the S change, there will be no significant change to surf prospects. Sorry kids, I wish it was otherwise. Outlook for the next week is also not too slick. Basically we’re in for more short period stuff right through to next weekend – at least.

Tomorrow morning should be perfect for the little Penguin paddle out at south Steyne! More details on that can be found in our news section.

Have a good one!

C C Hot and flat.

Thin cloud cover, dry and hot on the Central Coast this Saturday morning.  The swell is weak and small at 1 – 2 feet max from the east northeast.  There is a very light northwest breeze forecast to go northeast later.  Low tide 0840 and high tide around 1455.  Local barometer 1002 hpa, 68% humidity, 26 degrees C.  Have a good weekend.

Saturday early-riser call

Posted on December 6th, 2008 in Big Picture.

Hello Friends,

(The usual caveat applies: this was prepared late last night, so your mileage may vary!)

I wish the situation for surfers looked at least ambiguous. Then we’d have something to pin our hopes on. Sadly, all indications are that Saturday will be what Simon Marnie of the weekend show likes to call a “doona day”. At dark on Friday the nor’easter was blowing around 15-20 kts and the sea was dull grey.

Saturday morning is set to start out fine with 10-15kts of NW wind. That’d be nice if we had some SE swell. But we don’t. Instead we can expect a little remnant NE windswell from last night. Windswell’s kind of a big word for what I reckon is most likely to be knee high chop.

A south change is expected around midday, but I would be very surprised if it resulted in any improvement whatsoever.  In a word, Saturday looks dire.

I’ll be along with an update around 0715, just ahead of my weekly radio chat about surf prospects for the week ahead with the aforementioned Mr. Marnie.

BTW, don’t forget that tomorrow, Sunday, is the 15th annual Ocean Care Day at Manly. I might see some of you down there because I’m going to be part of the Little Penguin paddle-out, and then later I’ll be doing a stint at the Surfrider Foundation booth.
