Are ya keen?

Hello Friends,

first light reveals little NE windswell options in south corners.

0550: first light reveals little NE windswell options in south corners.

Thanks no doubt to the strong winds last night, there are in fact a few tiny waves to be had at spots with exposure to the NE. My guess is that they won’t last long though. Get out there asap would be my advice.

We’re not talking anything extraordinary, but it looks as though you could expect to find something in the waist high range, with the odd bigger one to keep things interesting. It’s windswell though, so you’ll have to get straight exposure to the NE if you want maximum size.

Wind is set to be 15-20 kts NE for much of the day. Late this afternoon a 20-25 kt south change is set to rattle Sydney’s windows and tomorrow should be SE’ly all day.

23 Dec 08: cam picks

Posted on December 23rd, 2008 in Cams today.

Thanks to the NE windswell, the most interesting cams on the east coast are those at beaches with good exposure to that direction – funny that.

Swellnet’s Manly cam shows surprisingly uncrowded little things coming in, but I reckon it looks a bit nicer for the early at Coffs Harbour.

The tide’ll probably be an issue later, and the wind is starting to work over the south end, but ZeeBra looks the tastiest option for eastern suburb surfers if the Coastalwatch Maroubra cam is any guide…

I know the waves aren’t any better than here in Sydney, but I wouldn’t mind messing about in the little things at Lennox Beach (coastalwatch cam).

Doesn’t look as though we’re missing much in Hawaii – if the Surfline Backdoor pipe cam is anything to go by. (You have to wait for this one, and then they only give you 30 seconds of vision.)

I looked around the world to see if I could find any other interesting surf, but it seems that anywhere with a cam has dud waves. Steamer Lane looks wretched for instance. About the nicest looking view I could find was of reporter Bruce’s stamping grounds. The Surf co.nz still snap looks clean and empty.

south-west vancouver island

Posted on December 23rd, 2008 in Surf Reports.

monday morning looked promising at our rivermouth point, based on the high-quality shorebreakers at the spit (not quite rideable), some 30 miles further from the open ocean, and about the only west-facing beach around – now, at noon, the spit has settled down to occasional, creamy shorebreakers – we have endured unusually heavy snowfalls and cold weather for several days, when this balmy, temperate island normally sees only a light fall or two each year, usually almost none at ocean level – roads currently hideous [excuses excuses] – marine winds from the east to 20 knots, at the mouth of the straits – please stay tuned ….

Mysterious wave heights increase detected

Posted on December 23rd, 2008 in Environment, Top stories.

Something strange is happening to the average height of the waves hitting the Pacific northwest’s foggy coastline – they’re growing by 7cm a year. According to Oregon State based researchers, the increase in average wave heights could do more damage than the sea level rise.

“This is the first time I’ve seen a comparison between wave height and sea level,” said Sultan Hameed, an atmospheric scientist at Stony Brook University, who organized the American Geophysical Union annual meeting session at which Ruggiero presented. “That was excellent analysis.”

Unlike sea level, the current data suggests that wave heights are not increasing uniformly across the globe. However, many regions lack the right data to do proper analysis. Bigger wave heights off the coast of Oregon were first discovered just a few years ago by other OSU scientists. They had the advantage of working with the unique dataset created by the Pacific coast’s longest-floating buoy; it’s been gathering data on wave heights for over 30 years.
