waist-high and chilly-dawg
Posted on December 24th, 2008 in Dee Why.Dee Why was fun for about an hour at mid-tide. Only small (waist-high) per above, but the crew was fun, guys doing the cockroach (catching waves on yer back), lotsa laughs, oh, and then the wind went onshore. Still smiling cause I had a few waves though.

Samoan surf report for week 51 of 2008 from Sa’Moana Resort

WEEKLY REPORTS for 2008
Report No: 51-08
Period: Monday 15th to Sunday 21st December.
Monday. High tide 9.06am. With no surfing guests today the guides were in maintenance mode, which was lucky because there was minimal swell about on our side, although the north shore had a heap of waves.
Tuesday. High tide 10.08am. Again no swell on our side so the new guests and guides shot over to the north side. With a solid north swell and glassy conditions Dragons Breath was absolutely going off. Double to triple overhead and round, heavy barrels. Every wave was spitting, hence the name Dragons Breath. With only 3 of them out it was quite an awesome experience. Super perfect but because of the size and hollowness not too many waves were caught but the ones that were ridden were very memorable. This is a very very serious spot.
Wednesday. High tide 11.14am. After brekkie 4 of the guests paddled out @ Resorts and had a great surf. It was really clean with light offshore winds and shoulder high waves. Mainly rights which were nice and wallie, some letting you do 2 or 3 turns with the odd barrel. All guests stoked.
Thursday. High tide 12.18pm. Coconuts was the spot for a great 2 hour surf. It was really glassy, shoulder high and quite fun. Most waves were pretty quick straight into the bazz, only letting you do a turn at the end. Then with a wind change they went over to Pebbles which was only small but was peeling nicely, and surfed there for another couple of hours.
Friday. High Tide 1.20pm. All guests today went on the Island Tour and some took their boards. They got a few right handers at Lalomanu, providing some entertainment for our no surfing guests. Again only small but with no one out but the sun it was pretty fun, warm and clean.
Saturday. High tide 2.15pm. Not many waves today but still a few guests went for a bash out @ Resorts for a few waves in super Samoan conditions.
Sunday. High tide 3.02pm. Tiny waves again out @ Resorts so they headed to the north side, but no luck with swell there so Sliding Rock was the venue for some bum/slippery rock sliding, always good value. Small onshore waves on both sides of the island.
Photos
Today’s shot is one taken from the shore with Dragon’s Breath in the distance, it’s a little fuzzy but you can definitely see how serious a wave it is.
From Paul & myself, the Management, Guides & Staff @ Sa’Moana Resort we wish you all the very best for Xmas 08 and are looking forward to a cracking 2009.
Cheers …………………………George

Posted on December 24th, 2008 in Contests, News Stories, Surf News, Top stories.

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion, will look to make it three-in-a-row in 2009, but the competition will be stiff.
COOLANGATTA, CG, AUS– The best female surfers in the world are locked in and the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour looks to be one for the record books.
Eleven ASP Women’s World Titles will be represented over four competitors in reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, 2004 ASP Women’s World Champion Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, and returning 2005 ASP Women’s World Champion and 2009 ASP Dream Tour wildcard Chelsea Hedges (AUS), 25.
“After a three-tier process including surfer, ASP technical committee and ASP Board votes, Chelsea Hedges has been selected as the 2009 ASP Wildcard,” Brooke Farris, ASP Women’s World Tour Manager, said. “The former ASP Women’s World Champion will bring experience, a solid backhand attack and a baby to the 2009 ASP Dream Tour. After finishing 8th in 2007, Chelsea took a year off to give birth to her daughter Mieka. With her undeniable talent and past results, Hedges was a strong selection.”
Despite announcing 2008 as her last season as a full-time member of the ASP Women’s World Tour, Beachley will also return to competition for select events.
“Announcing her retirement from full-time ASP World Tour competition last October, Layne Beachley will be using her ASP World No. 4 seed to surf at some of her favorite Dream Tour locations,” Beachley said. “Hunting her 30th career win, I suspect we will see Layne surfing at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach and her own event the Beachley Classic at Manly.”
In addition to the slew of returning champions, the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour will also boast the arrival of a new guard in women’s surfing, led by 2008 ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) Winner Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 18.
“With five fresh new faces onboard, the line-up for the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour is incredibly exciting,” Farris said. “It will be interesting to see how quickly the rookies adapt to life on the ASP Dream Tour and who will really try to shake two-time ASP Women’s World Champion Steph Gilmore off the podium.”
Fitzgibbons will be joined by fellow newcomers Bruna Schmitz (BRA), 18, Paige Hareb (NZL), 18, Alana Blanchard (HAW), 18, and Coco Ho (HAW), 17.
Next season’s ASP Women’s World Tour will be comprised of eight Australians, three Hawaiians, three Brazilians, one Peruvian, one South African and one New Zealander, and will take the ASP Top 17 to Australia, Brazil, Peru, “Somewhere” and Hawaii over eight events.
The Roxy Pro Gold Coast will kickstart the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour at Snapper Rocks on Australia’s Gold Coast. The waiting period for the Roxy Pro Gold Coast runs from February 28 through March 11, 2009.
