TG’s Forecast

Posted on January 8th, 2009 in Surf Reports.

Surf forecast issued Thursday 8 January 2009:  Seven day outlook for Sydney:

Despite the southerly conditions we’ve been experiencing since late yesterday evening, the surf has not risen much at all.  Weather is expected to be fine for the weekend, and the surf looks like continuing small to medium, which is also fine because there have been plenty of fun waves through the week - you just have to exploreto find the right waves at the right time/right place/right tide.

Outlook for the annual Avalon Beach surf swim on Sunday look ideal – should be a fine day with a light North East breeze for the start, freshening through the day. Free parking while the swim is on, no need to driev to one beach get picked up at another, clean water are all pluses for this fundraiser for Avalon Beach SLSC. Water temp at Av should be around 21 on the day, recovering from the cooler upwelling patches that followed several days of NE wind last week.

Surf outlook :

Friday: about 1 metre ta dead South places.

Saturday: about 1 metre South East, turning through  the East during the day.

Sunday: about 1 metre East North East, gradually rising later in the day 1-2 metre range.

Monday: in the 1-2 metre rnage East South East.

Tuesday: Ditto.

Wednesday: about 1 mtere East.

Thursday: Ditto.

See you at the Swim!

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor – NOW out on DVD

Advertorial

The action shifts to Asia for the third chapter in the adventure series, where explorer Rick O’Connell must fight the resurrected Han Emperor (Jet Li) in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick’s son Alex (Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and her brother, Jonathan (John Hannah) all join Rick in this new, swashbuckling adventure. And this time, the O’Connells must stop a mummy awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse that threatens to plunge the world into his merciless, unending service.

Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have laid forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army.

But when Alex is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents! When the monarch roars back to life, the O’Connells find his quest for world domination has only intensified over the millennia. Striding the Far East with unimaginable supernatural powers, the Emperor Mummy will rouse his legion as an unstoppable, otherworldly force…unless the O’Connells can stop him first!

average – not in the scientific sense

Posted on January 8th, 2009 in South Coast.

Dying 2ft of ENE swell and a few snippets of new S swell underneath the ugliness of the S/SE breeze. At least it’s cool. Water temp still warm. Surfable but hardly inspiring. Rosco.

It’s pretty dam average out there today, should pick up a bit later on, but for now at least there is nobody out, it’s nice to see that can still happen!

Dee Why — Back to flat

Posted on January 8th, 2009 in Surf Reports.

Believe it or not, it’s back to flat again, even after an overnight southerly blast.  Virtual Buoys think we’ll see an increase later on along with a building southerly wind.

However, at 0745, you’ll be hard pressed to catch a wave on anything shorter than 8ft long.

Surf school is out in force this morning making the best of conditions that are challenging for even beginners.

Swells on the way

2ft and growing at Piha, should be up to 4-5ft tomorrow, and it looks offshore for the whole weekend. East coast heading for 4-5ft by Sunday and light SE winds by then, so shaping up for a good one all over.

Overcast, dry and muggy on the Central Coast this Thursday morning.  The swell is ruffled and small at 1 – 2 feet from the east southeast.  There is a light to moderate south southeast breeze.  High tide 0615 and low tide around 1305.  Local barometer 1007 hpa, 89% humidity, 21 degrees C.    Have a good one.

Grey & southerly

Hello Friends,

About to give the new fantastic plastic machine a run in the littleness at Rincon.

About to give the new fantastic plastic machine a run in the littleness at Rincon.

Okay, just a quick little note for your afternoon amusement. Got waves again on this side of the ocean. Best of the trip (which isn’t saying a lot). We headed south from Santa Barbara with hopes of possibly finding some little things at Rincon. Alas, it was not to be. Still too small for the place. We did however have a brief conversation with two gents sporting Greenough style spoon kneeboards. One of the blokes (see picture below) was just taking his new epoxy version out. It even has a mount point on the nose for a little waterproof camera. Kinda cool.

Lotta mal riders, but general standard of surfing was not exceptional at California Street in Ventura on this particular afternoon.

Back in the car, and back south along the old highway to check the various possibilities from Emma Wood park to the Ventura overhead. Nothin’ doin’ really. Ended up back at California Street where the swell was showing much more obviously. A couple of guys just out of the water told us that it had just started to come up. Not often you hear that! Surface conditions were sub-optimal with a light N wind kinda junking it up a bit. But as fans of onshore conditions know, the faces are still clean. Sets were pushing into the shoulder high range, and the line was quite long. I jagged a couple on my 6’8″ 7S fish. Perfect board for the conditions – although the large number of mal riders would no doubt have argued the toss. A couple waves went for a good 2-300 metres. You can really play on something like that. Out of the water on dusk and home to Santa Barbara. Had dinner at It’suki, a brilliant little Japanese place that I can recommend to anyone in SB.

Hope your day’s been a good one!

…here’s what I wrote earlier…

At around 0530 the automatic weather stations along the Sydney coastline, the southerly was rolling along at 15-20 kts. Skies are set to be overcast with a chance of the odd shower saith the Bureau.

Surf situation is looking pretty marginal, with the MHL data showing only a metre or so of 7-8 sec windswell. My guess is that the only place big enough to be rideable will also have plenty of onshore wind to go with it.

Meanwhile, on this side of the pond it’s another beautiful, mild and clear southern California winter’s day. Sadly, for the millions who like to surf, it looks as though we’ll do well to score anything much above waist high. Anyway, hope to get out and about for an explore later, so maybe have a picture for you at some point this afternoon…

Have yourself a top old day, and may my remote prognostications be utterly and completely wrong!
