some decent waves around
Posted on January 12th, 2009 in South Coast.Neat looking new ENE swell with some good sets. In the 3-5ft range with longish lulls at times. Seemed to pump an hour or so prior to the tide peak. Wind swung from WSW to SSE (or something like that) at Gerroa just after 8. Still expect there will be some good waves around today especially when the tide drops a bit – and possibly some quite good dredges later this arvo. Rosco.
Back to work today? How about a gift from RealSurf?
Posted on January 12th, 2009 in Shari's wanderings.11:15AM UPDATE: They’re gone! —– It’s tough going back to work. And after the surf I just had a Dee Why, I feel sorry for anyone who was on a bus instead of a wave at 6:45 this morning.
So, the first 4 people who email me with a sad work story of where they were at 6:45 this morning while I was surfing get a $50 gift certificate for Surfection Mosman. I’ll post when they’re gone, er after I take another look at the beach with the visiting guests from Surfrider Foundation USA, plus our new Aussie GM, Julia.
Email me on admin@realsurf.com with the subject line “At 6:45 this morning, I was . . .”
And give me your story. If they’re funny, I’ll post them tomorrow. ![]()
I hope surfing is like riding a bike.
Posted on January 12th, 2009 in Bondi, Bronte, Tama. It’s been a while, now let’s see, paddle, push up, tuck legs under, get an edge…..Some waves at Bronte and Tama this morning, just a wind swell but waves all the same. Bondi flatski though swell due east. Bronte reef fun to waist high and summer reef at Tama up to chest high. Tama beach is fun but only for softies, flags up already. Liking this weather too.

Binalong Bay TAS – Teenager saved by cousin as shark loomed
Posted on January 12th, 2009 in Environment, News Stories, Surf News, Top stories. Here’s the second shark attack story for the weekend. Maaaaaayyyybe shark repellors aren’t completely unnecessary. Hmmmm:
The older cousin of a teenage girl attacked by a shark in Tasmania paddled to the 13-year-old’s aid and brought her safely to shore as the man-eater continued to circle.
The teenager was surfing with her male cousin at Binalong Bay, near St Helens, in Tasmania’s north east when the 5m white pointer latched onto her leg about 3.45pm on Sunday.
The shark dragged the girl under the water twice before her cousin reached the scene on his surfboard and hit the animal, causing it to let go of the girl’s leg, Senior Sergeant Jason Elmer of St Helens Police told AAP.
Fingal Bay NSW – Surfer saw splashing before shark bite
Posted on January 12th, 2009 in Environment, News Stories, Surf News, Top stories. Two shark attacks on surfers over the weekend. Here’s the Sydney Morning Herald’s story on the first:
A man surfing on the far north coast of NSW saw violent splashing before being bitten on the thigh by a shark, a local lifeguard says.
Emergency services were called to Fingal Head, south of Tweed Heads, following reports a 31-year-old board rider had been attacked by a shark just before 9.30am (AEDT) on Sunday.
The man was bitten on the fleshy part of his left thigh while surfing about 70m offshore, NSW Police said.

As Rob says, this actually looks like surf. It’s small & weak (still) and still from the NE, too. But it’s cleaner, and bigger (shoulder-high) than we’ve seen in weeks
Little bit of swell in Sydney this morning
Posted on January 12th, 2009 in Dee Why.For the first time in quite a while, there’s actually a bit of swell getting into Sydney. Nothing huge, but the Point has a couple of folks out and up the beachie a few also getting some slow nor’east direction waves.
Manly or other E facing beaches might be half decent.

Posted on January 12th, 2009 in Central Coast, Surf Reports.Fine, dry and mild on the Central Coast this Monday morning. The swell is weak and smallish at 1 – 3 feet from the east. There is a light west southwest breeze, southerlies all today then back to northeast later. Low tide 0320 and high tide around 0950. Local barometer 1009 hpa, 95% humidity, 17 degrees C. Have a great week.
Morning (remote) call
Posted on January 12th, 2009 in At large.Hello Friends,
Looks like Sydney’s in for a mostly sunny day. At around 0645 the wind was faintly from the WSW and there was 1.5 metres of mainly east windswell at about 8sec apart. Here’s the Bureau’s call for today along the coast:
Wind: E/NE 13/18 knots tending S/SE 15/20 knots during the morning. Sea: 1 to 2 metres. Swell: E 1.5 to 2 metres.
So, small, probably fairly junky and weak, but it shouldn’t be utterly flat…
The models seem to be calling for more of the same over the next day or so, but the easterly windswell might weaken a little and by the end of the week it could be pretty ordinary. At this stage the models are showing a south change of some strength at the weekend. Not getting too hopeful on that one just yet though as it currently looks like just being short period, wind-affected and fairly junky.
Surf situation has turned dire in SoCal, so no new tales of waves for you today!
Go well!
