Invaders retreating, surf still tiny.

Posted on January 26th, 2009 in Surf Reports.

No reason to hurry to Dee Why for a surf — not that you’d be able to find a place to park within a kilometre of the beach anyway, but it’s all but flat again. Couple of folks bobbing around at the Point but is just barely breaking and not worth the bother. Happy Australia Day. Cheers, Rob

That pulse of swell we had yesterday was as short and sweet as a chuppa chup. There’s nothing more Australian as slopping on some zinc cream and heading to the beach though and you may just find some left over swell on the lower tide. In case there’s no swell keep a heavy laden esky near by. Now that’s Australian. Happy Oz day.

A bit grey and grumpy up the pointy end (kinda’ like me)

Grey start to this extra day of joy. Waves have dropped from from yesterday with the swell from the SE-wind is light offhsore to head the dreaded SE and strengthen. Waves in the 1-3 feet range to be expected, but they’re slow and lazy on the higher tides.  Can’t really recommend anywhere-but it’s worth a surf just because it’s an extra one you wouldn’t have if you had to work today. Warriewood maybe OK-S Av. or Newport, S Palm-that’s about it up the pointy end.

The bad news is that the waves are even smaller & weaker than yesterday. The good news is that I went to the Souled Out Film Festival last night, and thoroughly enjoyed two great new surfing flicks – one about surfing the 50 states of the USA, the other about the surfing differences between Byron Bay & the Gold Coast. Happy Chinese New Year, everybody!

SE’ly morning

Posted on January 25th, 2009 in Surf Reports.

Hello Friends,

As PB’s already noted this morning, the SE’ly that blew away the blast furnace heat of yesterday has pushed up a bit of junky but okay size windswell. Dee Why was showing the odd shoulder high set up the beach where the wind was into it. Quite an improvement in size over yesterday, but it will require a certain amount of keeness to get you out there because the quality is pretty underwhelming.

Outlook for the rest of the day is so-so. The SE wind is set to pick up a little this morning and then during the afternoon it should weaken and swing more to the east. Lovely. Meanwhile, as the wind drops, the windswell it’s delivered will also start to fade.

By tomorrow we could be back to smaller conditions as the swell continues to fade overnight from its present 2 metres at 8 seconds, to maybe a metre at 7 seconds. So, Monday may not be flat, but with 10-15kts of ESE wind, I don’t reckon it’ll be particularly appealing.

Outlook for the coming week is generally fairly quiet along the east coast. As we head up to next weekend, SE Qld could start to see some improvement in size (no doubt with increasing wind), but the models don’t show the easterly swell getting very far down into NSW.

Have yourself a top old Sunday!

A few decent waves for a change

Swell….ish.

Some movement at the station from the weak southerly last night. Bronte reef not bad and protected from said southerly. Tama quite good but nipper’s surf carnival ruining any chance there. Bondi has a few options, cosy corner the pick. All about shoulder high from the south.

Looks like some southerly swell has popped up overnight. Unfortunately, it’s accompanied by a southerly wind, which means you’d need to tuck into a protected corner. Waves are around shoulder-high, but pretty bumpy everywhere I looked

Hello Friends,

0645: a few folks cooling off in the tiny waves.

0645: a few folks cooling off in the tiny waves.

Back on deck in Sydney once more and what do we have on the surf menu? Not a great deal where Dee Why’s concerned, that’s for sure. Seems as though it didn’t really cool off to any meaningful extent overnight, and this morning the sky was more cloud than blue. About the best thing you can say about the surf conditions is that they won’t be keeping you out of the water for safety reasons.

As has been the case for the last week, the windswell is out of the ENE at about a metre and only 7 seconds apart. If you found waves someplace yesterday, go back again today and you should have much the same conditions until the change rolls through this afternoon. Here’s the rundown from the Bureau issued a couple hours ago:

Wind: N/NW 15/20 knots, turning N/NE during the afternoon, ahead of a late S/SE change 25/33 knots. Sea: 1 to 2 metres rising to 2.5 to 3.5 metres with the change. Swell: NE 1 to 1.5 metres. Isolated thunderstorms.

As most Sydneysiders will know, we’re in for 38 or so on the coast today before that change comes in. Tomorrow the high will be around 25 along the beaches and we’re set to have 15-25kts of SE wind thanks to the aforementioned change.

The forecast models indicate that there could possibly be something into the rideable range at semi-protected south corners on Sunday morning. With luck the waves will stick around through the day even as the SE’ly backs off. By Monday though it appears that conditions will be smaller again as we head off into another stretch of marginal looking swell prospects along the NSW coast. There should be a little more energy up in SE Qld in a couple days as a weak blob of easterly windswell looks set to slide in from the Coral Sea. But down here in Sydney we’re unlikely to get much, if anything.

Ah well, it is summer after all.

Have yourself a great day and a top holiday weekend.
