Samoan Surf Report for week 7 of 2009 from Sa’Moana Resort

Posted on February 19th, 2009 in Surf Reports.

WEEKLY   REPORTS  for    2009

Report No:   07- 09

Period:           Monday 9th until Sunday 15thFebuary.

Monday.   High tides @ 6.39am & 7pm.   With not much south swell around they headed to The Rivermouth at Tiavea which was head & a half high on the sets. Lefts & rights, a bit washy & cross shore but still our crew made the most of it & picked the diamonds in the rough. A couple of turns or a few barrels were out there. When they got back Resorts was glass clean & shoulder high. They hit it for a few hours before dark & got a heap of fun lefts & rights. A good 6 or 7 hours in the water today, all 8 guests stoked.

Tuesday.  High tides @ 7.24am & 7.46pm.  Resorts again for an early, dropped a bit but awesome shape giving those who got up quality waves & a few pits. Again plate glass clean all day so they got another session in the arvo. Fun lefts & rights waist to shoulder high, guests happy as.

Wednesday.  High tides @ 8.10am & 8.34pm.  Due to a small south swell & bigger north swell they pulled a dawn patrol to Missions at Tiavea. Got over there at 7.30 am & surfed till 12ish. It was clean with no wind & really consistent, with the crew getting shoulder to head high sets in a picturesque location with not a person anywhere to seen. Barrels & turns, 3 or 4 turns on the goodies. Guests said one of the best surfs they had ever had.

Thursday.  High tides @ 8.58am & 9.24pm.  Boat trip to Wakas this morning which was glassy with long walls, all the hints of good session with no one on it.   3 others showed up but there were heaps of waves to go round and it was like a play ground out there, cutties, reo’s, floaters & barrels, it was great. Head high sets, the 4 of our crew got more than their fair share of beauties. Then another crew rocked up so they bailed to Special K for an hour & got some clean fun rights. Another epic day which won’t be forgotten quickly, guests & 1 staff high on life with 5 hours of surf.

Friday.  High tides @ 9.48am.  Y Tops was the spot this morning & it was pretty much all time. Head high, glass clean & perfectly lining up, racy waves for heaps of turns or get fully barreled. 6 guests got some of the best waves they’ve ever had & it was only us out there. Six hours in the water & the beers flowed that arvo & night with many tales of waves that day.

Saturday.  High tide @ 10.46am.  Again Y Tops, still clean & consistent but today only 2 guests out, so they got a heap of waves. Again a few pits but mainly racy walls for reo’s or cutties. Today & yesterday the wind was north & offshore our whole surfs.

Sunday. High tide @ 11.12am.  Small waves today so no surf trip, but a fishing trip instead. Small clean waves out the front at Resorts only waist high, maybe tomorrow??

Photos   Today shots are all out front @ Resorts three, 07a,  07b, 07c featuring Mick our Asst. Manager, seems like he might have been sprung when he should have been working. 07d is of a beautiful empty wave again @ Resorts

Cheers ………………..George

Late arvo update: just don’t be picky

Posted on February 19th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.

At around 330pm you could still get the odd little set wave.

At around 330pm you could still get the odd little set wave.

Just a quick little update for our late afternoon visitors…

Wind is around to the N to NE at about 15 kts, so surface conditions aren’t as clean as this morning at most places. Average height of the SSE swell is around 1.5 metres and the period is bumping along at 8 seconds.

I was down Dee Why way around 330 this afternoon and noticed that there were still a few little peaks up the beach. Huey’s switched the point off, but if you aren’t too picky about surface conditions, don’t mind a wait for a set, and have the right equipment. Based on what I saw earlier today, I’d expect similar conditions to be on offer at Freshy, Curly, Northy, Cooks Tce, Mona Vale, Bungan, Newport… you get the picture – pretty much anywhere with exposure to south-ish energy.

Here’s the Bureau’s updated call:

Friday: Wind: SW/SE 10/15 knots, tending SE/NE 10/15 knots during the afternoon, NE 5/10 knots at night.Sea: 1 to 1.5 metres, abating to less than 1 metre at night. Swell: E/SE 2 to 2.5 metres decreasing to 1.5 to 2 metres later.
Saturday: Wind: E/SE 10/15 knots.
Sunday: Wind: SE/NE 10/20 knots.

The next three to four days look as though they’ll be a bit smaller than today, but, with luck, not actually flat. I reckon my fishy will be just the thing. What’re you planning to use?

Jamie O’Brien surfs Pipe contest…on a bodyboard

Jamie O'Brien bodyboards Pipe!

Jamie O'Brien bodyboards Pipe!

press release:
Pipe fires on day one as Jamie O’Brien lights up the Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro presented by Senor Frogs

(North Shore, Oahu; Hawaii – Wednesday, 18 February 2009): All the indicators pointed towards an incredible day at Pipeline for the first day of the Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro presented by Senor Frogs – what resulted did not disappoint.

With the first four rounds of the Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro presented by Senor Frogs completed in epic conditions, the tone of the event had been laid, with the Ormerod twins from Australia, Ruben Quinones (Puerto Rico), Damian King and Oshi Grady (Hawaii) all leading the way.

When the sunrise broke through on the beautiful North Shore of Oahu this morning it revealed something that would be remembered for a many days to come.

The winds were light offshore and the swell was pushing three metres.

By mid morning it was an “ant-farm”, with hundreds of spectators lining the shore, all trying to get a glimpse of the best bodyboarders in the world.

The focus however was on the second heat of round four when Jamie O’Brien (Hawaii) hit the water.

Thousands of online viewers joined the massive crowd on hand to witness history in the making.

The kid that has turned almost as many heads as Kelly Slater taking on the worlds best bodyboarders at his home break.

And he went for it.

O’Brien took some seriously big sets (as expected) and did well to hold his rail in and drive through some big tubes only to be pinched on the end sections.

Former World Champion Ben Player (Australia) commended him on a job well done.

“Its so cool that Jamie had a serious dig,” Player said.

“Good on the guy. He showed that he knows the place well with some perfect positioning” he added.

In the end O’Brien finished a credible third, but was unable to qualify for the next round of competition.

“I kept losing my fins,” O’Brien remarked.

“I’ll be back bigger and better next year,” he stated matter-of-factly.

Moving into the second day of competition the Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro presented by Senor Frogs shows no signs of slowing, but as conditions are expected to deteriorate so organisers will make a call tomorrow at 7am.

The waiting period continues until February 27 2009 – with the best three days being used for competition.

Should have been here yesterday!

Posted on February 19th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.

Hope you got some of those smok’n pits at Manly or somewhere yesterday when it did an HTs impression up the whole beach but unfortunately the swell and power has dropped.  Curly has 2-4 feet of swell and looks like it might be good on the low shortly but the high was full, weak and inconsistent.  Cracker of a day- enjoy.

Plenty of waves, slowly cleaning up

Posted on February 19th, 2009 in South Coast.

3-5ft+ mix SE/ENE and still a bit washy with the early high tide. Swell could do with some offshore breeze to straighten it up a bit – and it seems like that’s what we’re getting today. Lots of potential but nothing too special yet. Maybe some decent waves this arvo or the early tmrw but not holding out much hope with the early high tide. Rosco.

That was fun, a little left though.

Moment of juice in the weakness at Longy.

Moment of juice in the weakness at Longy.

Hello Friends,

Out and about with the mobile RealSurf set up. First stop was Edgecliff Blvd for a squiz at the Collaroy-Narrabeen stretch. No one in at Collaroy really, but as you get up to about Marquesas, there were quite a few contending for the little sets. My strong impression overall is that we’re in for a very setty day, ie long waits between anything really surfable. Sets are not particularly big, but I did see a few waves that approached chest high at Gardens.

Around the corner at Long Reef things were pretty quiet as well. There was a little knot of folks waiting for the very occasional soft little waist high sets. Down the beach toward Dee Why there were a lot more people in the water but the size didn’t seem appreciably bigger when I pulled in to watch it. Like the Coll-Narra stretch, it’s setty and weak.

I’m writing this from high atop the headland at Curly. I’ll go down for a closer look after I post this, but from what I can see at this point is yet more of the same. No one’s in the water up the north end, a few are flopping around in the little shorey in the middle. Most people seem to be at the south end.

The MHL buoy is showing a couple metres at 9 sec from the SSE, but the swell looks to be shorter period than that to me – fwiw. Here’s the Bureau’s call…

Thursday until midnight: Wind: SW 10/15 knots, tending E/SE 15/20 knots in the afternoon. Sea: 1 to 2 metres. Swell: E/SE 1.5 to 2.5 metres.
Friday: Wind: SW 13/18 knots, turning SE 8/13 knots during the afternoon, NE 5/10 knots at night.Sea: 1 to 1.5 metres, abating to less than 1 metre at night. Swell: SE 2 to 2.5 metres.

More, including some pics, shortly.

BTW, I posted a bunch of pictures from Wed’s Manly sesh yesterday evening. Here’s the link.

Not amazing, but at least you can catch 'em.

Manly

rs_manly14Well this morning looks mediocre after yesterday’s bonanza at North Steyne. The swell is way down (but the crowds aren’t).  The tide is high at present but as it drops the waves should pick up again like yesterday. The wind is currently from the west but if it turns NE during the morning that will ruin the waves for the day.

The Bower isn’t happening at all to day but Winki has a little break happening for the bodyboarding (again nothing like yesterday’s stuff).

Flater

Posted on February 19th, 2009 in Surf Reports.

Wow, definitely a One-Day-Wonder-Swell yesterday. Surf is back to waist to chest high again today after some ripper sets yesterday midday.  Still, crew is thick and all over it this morning in Dee Why from The Point all the way to Longy. Smooth, light wind, sun’s out and it’s a beautiful day but the swell is dropping quickly.

Avalon to Narrabeen Rpt

Posted on February 19th, 2009 in Surf Reports.

Well, that’s that, then. What was yesterday is mostly just a memory today. Major drop in swell, though there’s still some size on the occasional set. What it means is clean bumps everywhere, but they’re just a bit small reallyNth Narrabeen 7amWarriewood 6.55amNewport 6.45amNewport 6.45amNewport 6.45amAvalon 6.40amAvalon 6.40am
