Surf forecast issued Friday 20 February 2009: day outlook for Sydney:

Perfect for the weekend..if you like onshores with a few showers. Looking better for Monday! Sigh…

Lots of fishing boats on the harbour today… means lots of fish.. means lots of…?? that word that less than 20% of you are “not conecerned” about at all… For my money, if the surf’s nothing special and the water’s murky…

We’ll see if I can work this new fangled technology to get a comment from Rex…

Mathews’ $20K monster wave

Tim Bonython writes:

Mark Mathews won $20,000 big ones & I won $3k (having got the shot) in last night’s ASL/Oakley Big Wave Awards at the Bondi Surf Club. Riding the biggest wave in Australia waters of the last year.

I still can’t believe it, as the entries were all so good & BIG – but I suppose the tape measure was stretched longer than the other finalist out of 40 contenders & won the prestigious award.

It should be on the news tonight if you’re home early enough to be watching.

Mark’s wave will be featured in my Australian Surf Movie Festival 7 starting Wednesday 18th of March.

Details will be posted on www.ASMF.net.au by Sunday.

Filmmaker Tim Bonython scored $3k for this shot of Mark Mathews.

Morning run report

Posted on February 20th, 2009 in At large, Curl Curl, Dee Why, Long Reef, Manly, North Narrabeen, South Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,

Headed out on my morning surf reccy some time ago now..

I began with a look at the fabled North Narrabeen around 0830. It wasn’t too crowded, but then it wasn’t really that good either. Tide was an issue, so lots of waves were fat and relatively slow. But, that said, if you were in the right spot, you could have a little fun. The waves were a bit bigger down the beach, just south of the carpark. Most were closing out, but again, if you were in the right spot…

It looked as though there were a fair few people down toward the Gardens, so I headed down that way for a look. Again, the tide was not being helpful, but the waves were definitely jucier because they were breaking in pretty close to the sand. There wasn’t any wind at that stage, so I was very sorely tempted to paddle out and join them because some of the sets looked damn fine.

After grabbing a couple snaps, it was time to check out Longy and Dee Why. Longy turned out to be just about flat down in front of the lugga. There was a little peak down toward the pole though. As it turned out when I pulled in to check it from the other end of the beach, the sets were not looking anything like as good as Gardens. The point wasn’t functioning at all. Perhaps I should’ve given it more of a chance though, because as I subsequently learned, Shari had been out not long before I turned up and she reckons the waves were actually quite fun. I don’t find it hard to believe, because like yesterday, it’s pretty setty everywhere.

Over the hill at Curly the situation was somewhat similar to Dee Why, ie. pretty average. There was some size, but the fatness prevailed and there were only a couple folks in the water up at the north end. The south end was its usual messy, slightly chaotic self. What can you say. Water’s warm, folks were in it and getting a few little sections.

Pushed on to the balliwick of our very own Big Al and discovered that once again the swell and Manly were getting along pretty famously. Actually, it was pretty much focused on North Steyne. Queenscliff was getting some sets, but the quality was down the beach from there. Ran into into a couple of my Surfrider mates, Kevin and Eve, and had a yarn while watching the waves. By the time we’d finished chatting, I’d decided to jump in the water before filing my words. It was just so pretty and glassy that I couldn’t stand to put off surfing. You know exactly what I mean, I’m very sure.

So now it’s after 11 and the wind has sprung up. Sets are fewer and further between but there are still a few into the head high range and there are still lots of people in the water. Ah, summer…

Go well with your day and check back later ’cause I plan to do an update for the afternoon crew.

ANOTHER WORLD PREMIERE FOR NOOSA FESTIVAL

Posted on February 20th, 2009 in Contests, News Stories, Surf culture, Surf News, Top stories.

The world premiere of the feature-length “Searching for Michael Peterson” will be a highlight of the Global Surf Industries Noosa Festival of Surfing, with the sport’s luminaries from around the world expected to attend.

The premiere, at Noosa Cinemas on Monday, March 16 will be hosted by former world pro surfing champion Peter Townend, and will also feature a live music set from “Morning of the Earth” musicians Peter Howe and Tim Gaze, plus an exclusive encore screening of the American Wide World of Sports special, “Puerto Rico World Titles 1968”, unseen for almost 40 years.

Searching for Michael Peterson, directed by Jolyon Hoff, is a docudrama telling the moving story of one of Australia’s greatest surfers whose career was cut short by mental illness. For five glorious years “MP” led the Coolangatta Kids and won virtually every event he contested, including three Bells Beach Pros back to back. His brilliant, aggressive surfing provided the centrepiece for Albert Falzon’s Morning of the Earth in 1972, and MP never looked back. His final tour victory, at the inaugural Stubbies Pro at Burleigh Heads in 1977, is regarded as the high point of the early professional era. Sadly, a year later triumph turned to tragedy and Michael’s demons claimed him.

Thirty years on, MP is still vitally interested in the sport and culture of surfing and is a fixture at most Queensland events, enjoying the action with his mother, Joan. He is rightly regarded as an iconic figure in Australian surfing, and Hoff’s film, while it pulls no punches, is an intensely moving tribute to the man.

Puerto Rico ’68 was unearthed by producer Larry Lindberg just prior to a 40th anniversary reunion of the event in California last year. This will be the first public showing of a remarkable document of an extraordinary time in surfing, as the shortboard replaced the longboard.

This rare performance together by Peter Howe and Tim Gaze celebrates the release of Peter’s new album, “Postcards from the Coast”, a musical celebration of a year spent sailing along the Queensland coast. Howe’s haunting “I’m Alive (Delightful Rain)” was one of the central themes of Morning of the Earth, and later gave its name to the ABC surf music television special. Gaze, formerly of Tamam Shud, is one of Australia’s greatest guitar virtuosos, equally at home with surf music or the blues.

A limited number of tickets for this special night will be available at $30. Tickets on-sale from Mon 23 Feb 09. For information visit www.noosafestivalofsurfing.com

cleaner smaller and not looking too bad

Posted on February 20th, 2009 in South Coast.

A mile cleaner than yday and a tad smaller into the 2-3ft+ range. E/SE swell direction!?  Heavy dew, lite offshore and not bad looking even with an early high tide. Worth a paddle if you got the time. Rosco.

Small at Curly but better on the low later

Posted on February 20th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.

The arm chair surf reporter pulled me up for the reference to HTs on Wednesday but damn it was good!  Manly looked fun this morning at 2-3 feet and better than Curly which was full and 2 feet.  Not really working on the east swell but should improve on the low around lunch.  Should be some sort of wave all weekend.  Enjoy.

Yeeeew… mona

sorry i’ve been lazy on the photo’s. The surf looks fun today, same sorta deal as yesterday, clean, shoulder high, a bit fat, but pretty nice all round conditions!

Noice.

Posted on February 20th, 2009 in Bondi, Bronte, Tama.

Some decent waves are getting into Bronte producing some nice head high lefts off the bank. And just like a bank, it’ very crowded. Tama outcrop will be working better on a lower tide and Maccas has been trying to work all summer. Try it if your made of rock proof flesh. Bondi much smaller and much more crowded.
