Northy was looking a mite busy this morning. Well, it is a Saturday, so I guess that comes as no great surprise… Lots of waves heaving about, but SE is not generally the optimal direction for that place. There were a few lefts trying to happen, but they often seemed to fat out shortly after standing up. On the other hand, there were a few rights, particularly at Carparks. Some quite okay size, so you’d be working a bit to get into position. Not for the beginners, that’s for sure!

Down the beach toward the Gardens, there were more people having a go. Again, it may be my imagination, but it seemed that the tide was really taking a toll. Sets didn’t seem quite as big as elsewhere, but there were a few solid ones in the mix and I reckon that come low tide, a few boards might get snapped…

Wozzawood & Turimetta

From where I was checking out Cooks Terrace (see earlier post) I couldn’t really see what was happening at Warriewood. So I made the steep drop down to the carpark and checked it out. Surprisingly there didn’t seem to be much size in the southern corner. Nor did the peaks seem to be doing much of anything interesting up the beach toward Cooks. Not many people in the water though, so anything decent that might have come through would’ve had minimal competition.

Around at Turrimetta there were folks in the water at the south end, but not the usually more reliable north end. It’s all in the swell direction I guess. Some fun size sets on offer, but the tide seemed to be playing a role, and as with the other spots I looked at, shutdowns were the order of the day with only the occasional makeable section standing up.

Mona & Cooks looks

Had a look at the Mona to Warriewood stretch around 0900. Plenty of swell on tap, but the situation at the Mona end looked fairly chaotic. There were folks out in it, but they were doing a lot of work chasing the odd reasonable section. Not that it was a bad thing to be doing on the last morning of summer. And when someone found a clean one, they were rewarded with a bit of push.

Down at Cooks Terrace the size was about the same (ie around the shoulder high mark), but it was quite a challenge to extract a decent section. Dunno if it was the tide or what, but the bank was not being too productive for the dedicated few who were bobbing around out there.

Interesting prospects

Hello Friends,

Now there’s something I like to see; the latest data from the MHL Sydney buoy showing 2 metres of SE swell with a period of 9 seconds. And the good thing is that it looks like the period tendency is still upward. Throw in light N-NW wind, and you have pretty good prospects for a fun morning I’d say.

I’ll be doing the radio report on 702 ABC shortly, so gotta make this quick. Sets at Dee Why are definitely into the head high range. And given that I only watched for long enough to grab a couple quick snaps, I’d say there’d be a chance of some bigger ones in the mix.

Here’s the official word from the Bureau:

Saturday until midnight: Wind: NW 8/13 knots tending NE and increasing to 15/20 knots in the afternoon, then turning SE at 15/20 knots in the evening.Sea: 1 metre rising to 1 to 2 metres.Swell: SE 1 to 1.5 metres.
Sunday: Wind: SE 10/20 knots.Sea: 1 to 2 metres.Swell: SE 1.5 metres.

So, it sounds to me as though we have a day of waves at most spots in Sydney (’cause almost everywhere along our beaches does something with SE). We have a high tide a little before 1100, so best options most places will be early.

I’d get on it if I could!
