Byron Bay Weekend Windup
Posted on February 23rd, 2009 in Surf Reports.
Well there’s another week over for us here at In Byron Bay Today. There were some good waves for logging most days but very little for any real shorties excpt for thursday which had size, but was lumpy. The weather was radically unpredictable and so was the swell. Yet that didn’t seem to stop a whole lot of people having fun. It was just one of those weeks; it would be raining heavily one moment and blazing sunshine the next. Truth is, most visitors spent the entire week rushing back and forth from the beach between cloud bursts. Most surfers found that if they didn’t bring a log or a fish they’d wasted their time. But hey, that’s just the way it was this last week in Byron Bay. Thought for the week. Why do the Gold Coast crew, drive straight past high quality empty waves to come and pack out the bay? We sure as hell don’t know.
Late night tunes: Island style
Posted on February 22nd, 2009 in Editor's picks, Late night tunes, Video. For post surfing chill-down tunes, I think a little bit of Hawaiian slack key guitar goes down a treat…
Here’s a number performed in true aloha spirit by the great Ledward Kaapana and slide guitar maestro Bob Brozman .
Gonna keep the mellow mood happening with this next standard, “Grandfather’s clock” a as played by Fran Guidry…

There’s a treasure trove of slack key on YouTube, lots of classics and heaps of covers by amazingly talented players. See what you think of “Glass Ball Slack Key” as played by young Brittni Paiva on her ukulele.

Aloha!
Curly Today
Posted on February 22nd, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.North Curly was the place to be this morning up until low tide and was serving up nice bomb sets every few minutes. It was good to finally get out and snap a few today. I can’t believe this is the first session I’ve shot in February but the dearth of enticing surf lately is to blame for that excluding of course the swell events of last week which of course I missed due to that little four-letter word – WORK! Arrghhh. Anyway, enjoy the shots at www.surfphotosofyou.com/latestcurly.

Out & about: Sth Narra, Dee Why, Curly
Posted on February 22nd, 2009 in At large, Collaroy, Curl Curl, Dee Why.Went for a little wander to check out the conditions. The dominant feature at 0900 was the chop. The SSE wind was chewing up pretty much everywhere I looked. Far South Narra was probably the least affected, but the waves were weak and around waist high at best. Dee Why was lumpy and junky looking, so I didn’t even bother grabbing a snap.
Over the hill at Curly, the swell was much more evident, but frustratingly for the very few people in the water, it was just as weak, slow and junky as everywhere else. The north end seemed to be a touch smaller than the south. But we aren’t talking a huge variation in size. Figure on waist high with the odd shoulder high set, and you’d be about right.
Next tide is a low around 1:16 this afternoon and by then, the wind could be around to the E-NE at 10-15kts and that might be a good thing for the northern ends.
Go well with your Sunday!

Quiet start to Sunday
Posted on February 22nd, 2009 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Dull skies greeted Sydneysiders this morning. Dull skies and small, but not flat, conditions at Dee Why. The MHL data shows we have the same metre or so of SSE windswell (8 sec period) we’ve seen for the last couple days. The good news then is if you found a wave yesterday, go back there again and you should be right.
As far as Dee Why goes, there seem to be weak little lines coming in and, as late as 0800, pretty much no one in the water from the point to well up the beach from the DYSLSC.
We’re set for a few more showers this morning, before the afternoon turns partly cloudy. The light SE winds this morning should turn to the E-NE this afternoon.
I’m gonna go out and check a couple more beaches for ya, so more in an hour or so…

Small, weak, full and barely breaking
Posted on February 21st, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.1 foot of SE swell with light wind that is too fat to break at the moment- maybe on the low tide this arvo but nothing right now. Looks like small for the rest of the week. Enjoy.
