We have waves but it’s hardly a secret

Posted on March 28th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.

Curly has around 3 feet of east swell and it’s full with light cross/ offshores (SW to SE) tending onshore later.  It’s crowded but worth a paddle.  I just got out from Manly where it was a fun, 2 foot, offshore, clean and had a crowd of about 50,000 including goat boats, stand ups, boogers, longies and shorties- I thought I saw Jesus but it was just a stand up. High tide around 9.30 so it should improve later if the wind doesn’t pick up too much. Nice weather- enjoy.

No shortage of waves (and bodies) around this morning. Swell is SE, but seems to be heading towards the East and around headhigh. A little swell around…

Posted on March 28th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why, South Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,

The quick version: there are waves to be had at first light. Find yourself a stretch of beach with good exposure to the ESE and you should find sets into the shoulder high range.

More in a sec…

0700 and there are definitely surfable sets at the south end of Dee Why.

Roll out the barrel in Byron Bay Today
Roll out the barrel in Byron Bay Today

That Monsoon trough near the Solomons was making its presence felt In Byron Bay Today. The weather itself was great, and the swell is steadily getting bigger. But the waves are starting to max out some of our currently unstable sandbanks. TC Hamish Broke up heaps of sand and it simply hasn’t had time to settle before the new swell hit. The banks are literally changing before our very eyes. The upside of which is that if you go looking, there are new peaks popping up all over the place. Some of which a really hollow, which is nice. The downside is that there are some seriously dangerous currents and conditions for anyone other than the experienced surfers. Today we witnessed some inexperience blokes trying to play hero for their buddies. But you don’t look like much of a hero when you need to have your board surgically removed from your doughnut. So remember, surf like this is for people that know how not to get hurt, if they don’t make it. Anyone may have big enough potatoes to pull in. But it’s the ability to make it back out that counts. Anyway kick back, relax and take a little time to see who managed to make the most from today’s offerings In Byron Bay Today.

Late arvo update: Huey’s showing some interest

Posted on March 27th, 2009 in At large, Gardens, North Narrabeen, Warriewood.

Hello Friends,

Since this morning, Huey’s decided to make a few changes. First he tweaked the swell direction back to SE from the dead south, then he bumped the average size from a metre to over two metres. At the same time the period has gone from 6 to 8 seconds.

The only setting that isn’t too flash is the wind. It’s been SE all day. As the sun gets lower in the sky, it’s still pushing along at 10-15 kts. Outlook for tomorrow is similar in the morning, but the wind should go around to the NE.

There were some chest to shoulder high sets at Warriewood, Northy and Gardens. But the quality was pretty ordinary. It was relatively smooth at Warriewood, but the waves seemed a bit weak to me. Northy was really messy and although there were some shoulder high faces, there were only three or four people in the water on a warm and relatively sunny afternoon. There weren’t that many more in down toward Gardens. It was slightly less messy than Northy and similar size. But the banks were looking pretty ordinary on the low tide. A touch more water over them and it might be a different story.

With luck, the swell should move more around to the ENE overnight and the period should stretch out as well. Could be good if we’re lucky tomorrow morning. Longer term outlook is for relatively windy and periodically rainy conditions. One of the models is currently calling for strong east wind and big ENE swell by midweek. Not too many surf options under those circumstances, sadly.

Have yourself a top old evening!

Cam misery: it’s looking good up north

Posted on March 27th, 2009 in At large, Cams today, Editor's picks.

Hello all,

It may be dire in Sydney today, but those of you up north, particularly in Queensland, are doing rather well.

Watch ‘em and weep:

Coastalwatch Noosa cam: lotsa lines for the mals

Swellnet Snapper: what can you say, but line land?

Coastalwatch Byron: ought to be enough for everybody today

Coastalwatch Lennox beach: Yeah, not their best cam, but if you know the place, you can believe there just might be something fun at the point on low tide…

Grey southerly morning

Posted on March 27th, 2009 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

The expected south change came through last night and it’s rearranged things along the beaches for us. There’s not much in the way of surf, but it isn’t quite flat at Dee Why this morning. A small group of water toy riders were splashing about at the south end of the beach. Waves look pretty much as you’d expect from a short period two metre south windswell.

We’re in for a cloudy day with occasional showers says the Bureau. And here’s their call for the next four days…

Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Strong Wind Warning.
Friday until midnight: Wind: S/SE 20/25 knots, reaching 25/30 knots at times at first, chiefly offshore. Easing to 15/20 knots during the morning, then to 8/13 knots at night.Sea: 2 to 3 metres, abating to 1.5 to 2 metres during the morning, about 1 metre at night.Swell: E 1.5 to 2 metres, with developing S’ly.
Saturday: Wind: E/SE 8/13 knots, turning NE during the afternoon.Sea: about 1 metre. Swell: S 2 to 3 metres.
Sunday: Wind: NW/NE winds 10/15 knots.

If you roll down the page a little further, you can see what the Goat has to say about our outlook. I may add some thoughts of my own later today – schedule permitting.

Go well!

on wednesday at 7 pm: up to 3-footers: strong, even lines every 3 – 5 minutes, breaking at our rivermouth point, at low tide – just two brethren and i, in still-chilly, march wind conditions – the trick was to catch only the stronger waves, which created a firm line radiating east of the point – otherwise, you get closed out into the point, where many more lines were breaking – within these strictures and gathering dark, i caught two waves carrying me into the shallow pools east of the point – marine winds at the straits mouth westerly to 25 knots by friday, then rising to a merry 45 knots on saturday – **********- empty and dark shall i raise my lantern, and the guardian of the night shall fill it with oil and he shall light it also – k gibran …

The locals get some air, In Byron Bay Today
The locals get some air, In Byron Bay Today

It was a mixed bag In Byron Bay Today. On one hand there were some inspirational moments, on the other there was some negativity and crap. But I suppose you can’t have one without the other. It’s up to each individual to choose how they wish to perceive the world around them. I know which way I prefer to see it. Today we chanced upon some turtles being released back into the wild by hippy animal rescuers. Then we were  lucky enough to catch a pod of dolphins getting off on a decent sized set out wide. yeah i know, getting a little cliche, but it’s all kinda cool. While all this was happening there was a good session going on in the water. Everyone was taking turns and having a ball. Then a small group of greedy fools arrived and hassled the crap out of everyone. Bad form boys, show a little respect when you come for a wave in the bay or perhaps go elsewhere. Remember this. When you surf away from home; you’re in somebody else’s home. Apart from some lame behaviour from a few mindless folks, it was a rather joyous day, with some bloody decent waves In Byron Bay Today.
