Bali Surf Report
Date = Wed, 25 Mar 2009
Time = 09:00 AM
Location = Padma – Legian
Size = 2-3 ft
Surfers = more than 20
Tide = high tide
Wind = onshore wind
Weather = bright and blue sky
Water = calm and glassy
Wave = fun wave, not big as yesterday, but … lets jump to the water

Legian: High tide at Legian can serve up some of the most power-packed beachbreaks in the world. Always bigger than Kuta, although it usually closes-out on low tide. It also closes out on high tide if the swell is over 8 feet. Because Legian is in the curve of the beach, it collects the compressed energy of all swells. If Kuta is only 3 foot, sometimes Legian can be mignificent at 4 – 6 foot. A handy hint is that Kuta Reef is often about the same size at Legian. A hot crew of young Bali locals surf here regularly, so smile, share and be friendly to enjoy your sessions here.

Marrawah, Tasmania — Day 2 of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic in Tasmania has again found excellent surf and is running at the surf break appropriately named – Kelpies – near Marrawah, Tasmania’s north west coastline.

C J Hobgood (USA/Florida) is the number one seed surfing the O’Neill Cold Water Classic in Tasmania. He revelled in the excellent waves on Tasmania’s rugged north west coastline today posting two outstanding rides, a 9.57 and a 9.00 to take a massive round two heat win. It’s the first time an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) event of this status has been run in Tasmania and after two excellent days of surf, the location looks to be a huge success.

Hello Friends,

From the look of the latest MHL Sydney buoy data, we’re roughly where we were when the sun set yesterday. Wind is out of the NE at around 10-15 kts at a little past 0700 and the call is for it to build through the day.

Fine, dry and warm on the Central Coast this Wednesday morning.  The swell is semi-smooth and shapely at 2 – 3 feet from the east northeast.  There is a light north breeze forecast to go northeast later.

High tide 0810 and low tide around 1435.  Local barometer 1014 hpa, 93% humidity, 17 degrees C.  Have a good one.

Laybacks & Barrels In Byron Bay Today

Do you think it could get any better than it already is In Byron Bay Today? What is this, the 6th or the 7th new swell to hit us since Christmas? Well I reckon if you count the smaller swell events it would have to be number seven. Man, we really are getting spoilt rotten here this year. Sorry down in Sydney guys, but thats just the way it’s been. Look at the bright side, yes it’s been pretty good, but man has it been crowded. Also TC Hamish shifted a lot of sand about and this time around the banks aren’t quite as good as they’ve been. If you bother to do a little exploring you’ll  find there’s been some good chunky, empty beach breaks as well up here. Town itself is all abuzz at the moment, it’s almost like everyone’s slowly winding themselves up for Easter and the Bluesfest which is always a big event in the bay. In the mean time relax, enjoy the shots and take a little time out to check the way it was In Byron Bay Today.

Marrawah, Tasmania – The O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series launched in style today with Bluff Reef putting on a solid display of six to eight foot waves, showing the incredible potential of this area of Tasmania.

And it was Tasmanian surfer Dustin Hollick who showed the rest of the world how these challenging and wild waves should be surfed, achieving a score of 8.33 off an impressive barrel – and that on his third heat in a row.

“I didn’t have a local advantage in terms of knowing the wave,” he said, “because I’m from down south in Hobart, and I only come up here a few times. But maybe in terms of water temperature I had a bit of an advantage – some of these guys were saying it was freezing for them.”

Dustin qualified through the local trials, finishing his first heat then paddling back out again for the trial finals, before heading straight out again for the first heat of the competition where he finished top, in front of Jarrad Sullivan.

Watching and cheering him on from the comfort of the house of Max and Christel - a local couple with a house right on Bluff Reef who have welcomed the entire crew and surfers – were his friends, and the rest of the Tasmanian support crew.

“Luckily I was really tired,” he said. “By the time I got to the qualifying round I wasn’t nervous because it was way too quick and I was too tired.” Although a renowned Shipsterns rider, Dustin is in awe of the level of surfing currently here in northwest Tasmania. “I’m looking forward to going through and surfing the next heat,” he said, “but I’m also looking forward to seeing all the guys surfing these waves. We’ve never had anything like this in Tasmania.”

Among the top surfers here for the O’Neill Cold Water Classic, Tasmania, is former WCT surfer, and legend, Cory Lopez who has been struck by the beauty of this area. “It’s my first time in Tasmania,” he said. “And this place is beautiful – really awesome. It’s amazing to discover this super isolated place with rolling hills and good waves. I’m really looking forward to doing this event.”

Also eagerly looking forward to his heat tomorrow is the only British surfer of this event. Sam Lamiroy.

“I’ve been so surprised by the quality of the waves here,” said Sam. “Here at the Bluff is probably as good as you are going to get on the tour. This feels like a real step in the right direction. It’s got raw power and good shape on the right ones.”

“But it’s not just the competition,” he said. “It’s also everything that goes with it – the scenery, the people who are so welcoming, and even the snakes and Tasmanian devils.”

Scoping the situation

Posted on March 24th, 2009 in At large.

Hello Friends,

As promised, went and grabbed a few snaps for your amusement. Tide really fattening out everywhere I looked and that wind is building up reasonably quickly too. By the time the tide’s at a reasonable level for most spots, it’ll be damn breezy. Still, if you don’t mind onshores and sideshores, there could be something to catch at heaps of places today.
