Sharkwater: fundraiser for Sea Shepherd
Posted on April 3rd, 2009 in Good causes, Top stories.What: Sharkwater documentary
When: 430pm for 5pm showing on Sunday 5 April 2009
Where: Collaroy Cinema $15, ($10 unwaged and kids)
The why from the organisers:
As many of us know, sharks are in the headlines now.
But millions of sharks are killed by finning each year.
You can help stop the mindless slaughter of millions of sharks [for shark-fin soup] each year by coming to see the movie ‘Sharkwater‘.
No-one knows how the marine ecosystem [on which we depend for much of our oxygen] will be affected by the killing of the top ocean predators.
The amazingly beautiful [multi award winning] photography of
‘Sharkwater’ and the thrilling adventure will transfix you. Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton gave it 4 stars]
“Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas.”
To introduce the movie will be Valerie Taylor, Knight of the Order of the Golden Ark, with her husband, Ron who made early underwater studies of these prehistoric animals and led to the new understanding of sharks. She says, ‘This documentary should be shown in every school in the world. It is brave, honest and above all illustrates how 2 men with right and courage on their side can change the way we should all see the future of our planet. I am humbled by the message this documentary offers I just hope all who see it feel the same’.
[all proceeds go to the 'Sea Shepherd' and their work to save the marine ecosystem]

Date = Fri, 03 Apr 2009
Time = 10:00 AM
Location = Padma – Legian
Size = 2ft
Surfers = more than 20
Tide = low tide
Wind = offshore wind
Weather = sunny
Water = calm and glassy
Wave = small wave 2ft dominant, with 3ft of set not often but still fun
Legian: High tide at Legian can serve up some of the most power-packed beachbreaks in the world. Always bigger than Kuta, although it usually closes-out on low tide. It also closes out on high tide if the swell is over 8 feet. Because Legian is in the curve of the beach, it collects the compressed energy of all swells. If Kuta is only 3 foot, sometimes Legian can be mignificent at 4 – 6 foot. A handy hint is that Kuta Reef is often about the same size at Legian. A hot crew of young Bali locals surf here regularly, so smile, share and be friendly to enjoy your sessions here.

Dropped but not dead
Posted on April 3rd, 2009 in Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Looks as though we still have some energy around although it’s now looking to be a third the size of yesterday at this time. That still means chest high sets at Dee Why though. And as it’s dropped, it seems to have cleaned up as well. As the day got started, the wind was just a light offshore and that’s no doubt helped.
Next tide is a low at 1014.
Here’s the Bureau’s call:
Friday until midnight: Wind: N/NE 10/15 knots, increasing to 15/20 knots during the afternoon and reaching 20/25 knots at times mostly offshore.Sea: 1 to 1.5 metres, rising to 2 metres in the afternoon. Swell: E about 2 metres. Isolated late thunderstorms.
Saturday: Wind: N/NW 10/15 knots ahead of an early morning S’ly change 20/30 knots, then easing to 15/20 knots in the evening.Sea: 1 to 1.5 metres early, rising to 2 to 3 metres in the morning, then abating to 1.5 to 2 metres in the evening. Swell: NE 1.5 to 2 metres.

Byron Bay April 2nd / 09

Well folks you guessed it, the wind’s a howling onshore and it’s been raining nonstop In Byron Bay Today. Those that brought raincoats wore them but most just stripped down to their boardies, undies etc, as a way of dealing with the rain. A pragmatic approach that fits in bloody well with the way we do things here in the bay. The minority as usual complain loudly, while the majority just play the cards they are dealt and get on with doing what needs to be done. After all, complaining about the weather isn’t going to change it is it, it just makes us resent it, and what’s the point of that? The surf today was quite simply a mess, but there were still waves. So we surfed it and shot it anyway. Because that’s what we do, we bring it to you the way we experience it when we’re out and about looking for the daily delights In Byron Bay Today.
