Samoan Surf Report for week 16 of 2009 from Sa’Moana Resort
Posted on April 23rd, 2009 in Surf Reports.WEEKLY REPORTS for 2009
Report No: 16-09
Period: Monday 13th till Sunday 19th April.
Monday. High tide @ 9.19am. A very solid south swell increased overnight, but it was really disorganized & wobbly. They all thought we were in for a great session but nowhere was really doing it. They surfed Pebbles @ head and a half high, with some good ones but it was all over the place. Checked Wakas which had a weird wobble on it also.
Tuesday. High tide @ 10.11am. Straight over to over to the Rivermouth today which was offshore & clean. Lefts & rights which allowed a couple of turns on head high sets and was quite consistent so everyone had a great morning.
Wednesday. High tide @ 11.12am. Back over to the Rivermouth again. Similar to yesterday with better rights than lefts. Really clean with not much wind and head high and great carvable walls, only a few barrels.
Thursday. High tide @ 12.18pm. 2 boats out today. One going to Pebbles which was shoulder high and clean but it had a little wobble thru it but there were a few fun ones thru the inside but a bit inconsistent. The other boat went to Y-Tops which was head high and the wind was cross shore but it was still really surfable. The crew made the most of it and surfed for 4 hours straight.
Friday. High tide @ 1.19pm. An early boat trip to Boulders this morning which looked like it was just big enough to break, but then a few beauties pushed through showing its true grit. No barrels but some long racy walls, a little inconsistent but the guys loved it. Then over to Wakas for the high tide which was unreal when they first arrived but a crowd came (5 guys) and the wind got into it, so they only had an hour on it.
Saturday. High tide @ 2.12pm. Up to The Island today due to the south east wind. A bit of a rough ride up but it was really clean once they got there. A little sectiony but if you picked them there were a few gems with a few bomb double overhead sets mainly on the middle and end sections. They surfed there for 3 hours Then stopped off at Pebbles on the way back for another surf in waist to shoulder high but it was clean and had nice shape.
Sunday. High tide @ 2.57pm. Another bumpy boat trip back to The Island but the swell had dropped off considerably with sets lucky to be head high. Not as good a session as the last few days but still heaps of fun in an amazing place.
Photos Sorry . No photos this week
Cheers ………………. George

That’s Thursday just about gone
Posted on April 23rd, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Gotta love Huey. He reckoned we weren’t surfed out yet, so he just kept the swell machine on. Okay, there was the little matter of the wind re-adjustment late this morning which meant that yours truly only got a couple smooth ones at Manly before it got all ruffled and messy. Wind was still out of the ENE along the coast of Sydney as we ran out of daylight, but at least it wasn’t too strong. Certainly it wasn’t putting off a good size crew at Dee Why. I’d bet good money there are similar size crowds everywhere else that’s liking the ESE swell.
So, now that Thursday’s pretty much in the memory banks, how’s it looking for tomorrow?
Well, let’s start with the people who really ought to know… our chums at the BoM…
Friday: Wind: N/NW 5/10 knots, tending N/NE in afternoon and increasing to 15/20 knots, 20/25 knots offshore in evening.Sea: About 1 metre rising to 1.5 to 2.5 metres later. Swell: E/SE 1.5 to 2.5 metres.
A fine and mostly sunny morning after some early fog patches clear.
Cloud increasing later in the afternoon or evening, with the chance
of a shower or two overnight. Light to moderate northeast to
northwest winds.
First tide for Friday is a high at 0722.
Dunno about you, but I quite like the look of the possibilities for tomorrow morning. Should be waves at lots and lots of places too. Woo hoo!
Double Tassie Win at Fantastic Junior State Titles
Posted on April 23rd, 2009 in Contests, News Stories, Surf News, Top stories.
For the first time in Tasmanian junior surfing history two surfers have taken out dual divisions. Hamish Renwick (Clifton) in under 18 and under 16 male divisions and Zoey Grey (Marrawah) in the under 18 and under 16 female divisions.
Near perfect 1 metre conditions greeted surfers at Shelley Beach on Saturday with powerful innovative surfing being a feature from the likes of Hamish, Hugh Westacott (Clifton) and Tom Gray ( Shelley Point).
Sundays strong cross shore winds made for challenging conditions in shifting 1 metre conditions. Long time sparring partners Hamish Renwick and Tom Gray pushed each others surfing to the limit all day. In the girls Zoey Gray and Sophie Burke exchanged wave for wave in a close fought final.
The under 14’s saw Kelly Nordstom surf way beyond his years to take out the Under 14’s . Emerging surfer awards were given to Harry Bowe (Lauderdale) and Lizzie Stokley (Bruny)

Size = 3-4 ft
Surfers = more than 20
Tide = high tide
Wind = light offshore wind
Weather = cloudy
Water = smooth
Wave = very nice wave with consistent sets and power
Halfway: located level with Poppies Lane 2, often has the best peaks. You’ll spot it from almost anywhere because there’s always a solid group out there. It gets a bit more wind than spots down the beach but holds better shape thought the tides and is pretty consistent, and usually hollow. If its over 4 feet you will get thumped!

Posted on April 23rd, 2009 in Surf Reports.on wednesday at 6 pm: only one-footers at our rivermouth point, but a lot of promising turbulence – shapely, sweeping small lines at very low tide, with windy conditions abounding – augurs well for surfing a little further up the straits, towards open ocean – estevan point, some 300km hence (50km north-west of tofino) is looking ragged but very active, with at least 2 – 3 footers – strong marine wind warning at our straits’ mouth: northwesterly to 30 knots – please stay tuned ….
Running around
Posted on April 23rd, 2009 in At large, Curl Curl, Manly, South Narrabeen.Hello again Friends,
Did a quick run around to get a sense of how the southern end of the Northern Beaches looked early.
Here are a few thoughts…
Fairy Bower seemed to be pretty busy, but there may have been a long lull because I really didn’t see anything above chest high. Given the swell, I think there must be bigger ones though. Lulls + crowds = 7/10
There were good waves all up and down the Manly stretch. Very crowded of course, but the payoffs could be pretty impressive. 8/10
Freshwater didn’t have too many in, but I think most of the bigger ones were shutting down and the surfable smaller ones were inconsistent. 5/10
Curly didn’t seem to have anyone in. The north end looked plausible, but the lack of any participants has to raise question marks. 5/10
At Dee Why both the point and the beach were offering options. Quality was pretty good, crowds were about average for hols. 7/10
Far north Collaroy to Northy was pretty uncrowded. There were a few folks out down toward Mactier street and then hardly anyone between there and Northy (where the standard issue cluster of bods was on it). Rides at the south end were short, but could be intense. 7/10
Firing–And crowded at DY
Posted on April 23rd, 2009 in Surf Reports.Nice conditions and 18 in the water at the Point and similar up the beachie. Some great waves around but you won’t be alone.

Beautiful conditions this morning in Sydney

Showers, mild and miserable on the Central Coast this Thursday morning. The swell is semi-smooth and still got swell at 3 – 4 feet + from the east southeast. There is a light south southwest breeze at the moment but forecast to go southeast and strengthen again then fade down. High tide 0640 and low tide around 1250. Local barometer 1017hpa, 97% humidity, 16 degrees C. Have a good one.
Calming down, cleaning up
Posted on April 23rd, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Cleaner this morning than at this time yesterday – and the swell still pushes on. It’s a touch smaller, but it looks as though the settings are very close to yesterday’s. The wind is lighter too and at the moment it’s offshore. As you can see from the forecast below, it’s set to stay side- offshore this morning and the swell should be more than adequate for surfing purposes all day.
I’ll try to grab a few more snaps and update you later on this morning.
High tide was around 0638.
Here’s the Bureau’s call:
