Weather = bright
Water = not really calm
Wave = very fun and plenty, yo surf up!
Legian: High tide at Legian can serve up some of the most power-packed beachbreaks in the world. Always bigger than Kuta, although it usually closes-out on low tide. It also closes out on high tide if the swell is over 8 feet. Because Legian is in the curve of the beach, it collects the compressed energy of all swells. If Kuta is only 3 foot, sometimes Legian can be mignificent at 4 – 6 foot. A handy hint is that Kuta Reef is often about the same size at Legian. A hot crew of young Bali locals surf here regularly, so smile, share and be friendly to enjoy your sessions here.

Some cloud & sun, mild and windy on the Central Coast this Tuesday morning. The swell is bulky and rough at 4 – 6 feet from the southeast. There is a moderate southerly blast still happening. High tide 0510 and low tide around 1140. Local barometer 1017hpa, 80% humidity, 18 degrees C. Have a good one.

Lookin’ a lot like yesterday at this time in Sydney. However the wind isn’t blowing quite as hard so maybe it will be slightly less junky at those spots that had something like a wave yesterday. It was a pretty short list of options though.

Thursday: Wind: SE/NE 5/15 knots.

Caverns, wind and plenty of swell was the nature of things In Byron Bay today. The swell continues to increase from the S/E. The wind is howling around the 40-50 knots mark and most places are too blowy for words. But for those who knew where to look there were pits a plenty, not to mention a laugh at those who kept getting held up too late by the offshore blow. Don’t forget we’re giving away two new custom made Bob Brown boards, long , short or Retro a year to IBBT subscribers.

Thought I’d duck down to the beach for one last look as the last of the light drained out of Monday afternoon. The clouds were getting lower, the rain was threatening, and the wind wasn’t backing off. Checked Whiterock, Fishermans and Brownwater first. At least one brave type was out at Whiterock, but I didn’t see him catch anything. A few bodyboarders were having a play with the little ones washing along the rocks at Fishermans but it was just too small and inconsistent to tempt anyone into waiting for a set at Brownwater.
Went around to Collaroy and there were a fair number in the water there. Quality was strictly ordinary but with a mal under your feet, you had a chance of picking up something mildly interesting. There were a few bods up north of the pipe, but as with Whiterock, I didn’t see anyone catch anything.
From the look of the models and the Bureau’s forecast, we aren’t going to have much relief from these conditions until about Friday.

Wednesday: Wind: SE 10/20 knots.
Thursday: Wind: SE 10/20 knots.
Forecast for Tuesday
A few showers. Cloudy periods. Moderate southeast, fresh near the
coast. Dangerous surf conditions.
Cross-stepped up, then went for five as the shorey approached, Collaroy.
Capering about in the little wash along the rocks.

Dee Why: Plenty of big old sloppy, chunky slabs
Posted on April 20th, 2009 in Surf Reports.It’s big. You could surf it if you were keen, but no one out from Dee Why Point to Long Reef at 1130, if that tells you anything about the relative quality. 20-25 knots of SE wind on it too.

Just back from a tour of the beaches south from south Narrabeen.
Here’s the executive summary:
South Narra: big, messy, no one out
Collaroy: small, not as messy, only one or two chasing waist high things
Dee Why: didn’t see anyone in the water, but didn’t watch for very long either. Big and messy in the beachy, swell angle wrong for the point.
Queenscliff to North Steyne: big, messy, no one out, ferggedit
South Steyne: a bit cleaner and some catchable ones into the head high range, but I’d rate it 5/10 – ie, average.
Bower: shoulder to head high plus, but pretty messy looking when I checked it between 0900-1000. Lotta people in the water, fairly inconsistent, but definitely some fun ones
Not the cleanest conditions, but don't think he'd be complaining (the Bower around 0900)
Bowls to be found amongst the general choppiness at Fairy Bower.
Around 0900, not terribly clean, but you could catch em if you were keen.
Kinda windy this morning

Interesting. The MHL buoy is showing the SE swell is averaging 2 metres out at sea. But if you look at the picture of Dee Why just posted, wave faces are a lot bigger than two metres. In fact, I saw one set close out across from Dee Why point to the outermost peak off the SLSC. I’d say the wave face was at least 4 metres on that one. So what’s happening? The average period is spiking into the 14 sec range, that’s what.
The SSE wind was howling around the crows nest when I climbed up to get a snap. It was like trying to take a picture from the back of a ute travelling at 70 kph. Not the easiest with my stovepipe style Century 650mm lens. Not surprising really as the latest data from North Head shows the SE wind at 30-40 kts.
Didn’t seem to be anyone in the water at Dee Why – hardly surprising really. The wind is set to stay at these speeds pretty much for the next 48 hours or so. I might head out shortly for a more extensive look shortly. Go well with your day – and know your limits if you’re thinking of getting in.
