Posted on May 9th, 2009 in Surf Reports.on friday at 5 pm: very small, but sweeping, circular, steady lines at our rivermouth point, suggesting that a little further up the straits could offer some choice rides – weather calmer, clear, warmer, but still promisingly windy and changeable – at our straits mouth, 35 km past our rivermouth point, hurrah, strong marine wind warning, northwesterly to 20 knots – now, at 3 am saturday morning, gosh it’s difficult to tell how ucluelet (130 km north-west of our rivermouth point, and 30 km before tofino) and point estevan (210 km from the rivermouth) are doing, but you can wager there is stuff going … – please stay tuned ….

Posted on May 9th, 2009 in At large, Curl Curl, Dee Why, South Narrabeen.Hi All
When everyone else was heading to the beach, I was driving to Mt Colo, 100 kms to the west (family thing). But it looks like there should be waves all day, so I may yet add my name to the cast of thousands enjoying Sydney’s beaches today. Places with any size, eg Curly and Dee Why were very well attended.
I agree with earlier reports that there is a fair amount of fatness to the swell, but if you could find something bowling, well, a bowl’s a bowl, id’niit? Fun to be had for sure.
I started my look around with a scan of the Collaroy-Narra stretch. Not much happening at Collaroy but from around about the south Narra surf club on north there were lots of little peaks keeping lots of folks entertained.
Around the corner at Longy, there was a small crew out the back on the bombies. Saw exactly one wave come through and it wasn’t much. More action inside and up the beach from about the lugga to Dee Why.
Traffic in Dee Why mirrored the crowd levels in the water. Some sets into the head high range, but a fair number of multi-person takeoffs, and the super peak seems to be the former super peak.
Over the hill at Curly land there were many more people having a cut at half a dozen different peaks. The north end was just not coming together that much, so the real action and crowd density was from about the middle of the beach right into the south corner. A few head high plus sets on offer. Pretty sectiony – which kind of helps break up the crowd.
Tomorrow the weather won’t be so nice, but the swell should begin to ramp back up as it heads toward bigness for Monday (though not as huge as it looked it might be last week). Models are agreeing with the Bureau (or vice versa) and currently saying we could see S to SSE swell at 3-4 metres at 14 sec apart. That’s big and juicy.
Here’s the Bureau’s take:
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Saturday until midnight: Wind: S/SW 15/20 knots, increasing to 20/25 knots during the evening. Sea: 1.5 to 2 metres, rising to 2 to 2.5 metres in the evening.Swell: S 2 to 2.5 metres.
Sunday: Wind: SW/SE 15/25 knots, easing to 10/20 knots later.Sea: 1.5 to 2.5 metres, abating to 1 to 2 metres later. Swell: S 2 to 3 metres, increasing overnight.
Monday: Wind: SW/SE 5/15 knots. S/SE swell 3 to 4 metres
.
Dee Why: Good, but fat
Posted on May 9th, 2009 in Surf Reports. No point in me posting further photos after those beauties from DYSH this morning.
Conditions are good with light westerlies and a meter and a bit of S swell. As you’ll note on the photos, it seems the mals are getting most of the wave though cause the takeoffs are pretty fat. Perhaps that’ll change now that the tide is dropping.
Beautiful day out there today. Get out and amongst it.
Cheers,
Rob
Swells on the rise
Posted on May 9th, 2009 in Surf Reports.Arra’s wraping from way around the point – some are all the way to the beach, second section close out most of the time. 4-5ft but long waits for the right one. Wind’s off shore in the bay but getting into it at the point.
Go now
Out and about

The Weekend Windup In Byron Bay May 8th 2009
Posted on May 9th, 2009 in Byron, Comment, Cool Picks, Editor's picks, Just for fun, Local Colour, Surf Reports, weird surf.Welcome to the In Byron Bay Today Weekend Windup. it’s been pretty busy up here this week, not much swell, but last weeks big ocean swim, a QLD long weekend, The Byron Bay Malibu Classic and the Byron triathlon. No wonder the joint is packed right now. But it’s all about raising bucks for charity so it’s cool. Speaking of cool, our mate Ron bolted his spare foot onto the nose of his stick. Entered the Byron Classic and demanded he be scored a hang five each wave. There’s nothing like an irreverent amputee. He also reckons if you’re complaining about other surfers, your surfing must not be good enough to keep you entertained, and that you’re taking the joy of surfing as a right not as the gift it is. we say Hear, hear to that Ron.
As for the surf; it’s been small folks, but there are a few little wedgy peaks around if you make an effort to go look for them. Word has it we may see some more swell soon. But either way who could complain, if you’re lucky enough to find yourself, In Byron Bay Today.
