Byron Bay Today May 27th 2009
Posted on May 28th, 2009 in Byron, Just for fun, Local Colour, Surf Reports.Absolutely glorious would be a fairly accurate description of the weather, In Byron Bay Today. The sun shone, the winds were light and the waves were good fun for old school logging. There were also a few good banks further up the beach with some nice chunky peaks for the Little Whiteboard set, which is cool but we missed that session today. Now the water in Byron is still brown from the floods, and it’s likely to take another week or two to clear up a bit. The mess is starting to be cleaned up and life is starting to get back to whatever it is that passes for normal around here. It was a refreshingly gentle day for us and many others, In Byron Bay Today.
Grey, glassy afternoon
Posted on May 27th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Went for a splash at Dee Why late this afternoon to take advantage of the dropping tide. As the tide continued to drop, the waves got crunchier and the crowd grew. Sets were into the shoulder high range and it seemed that there were only a couple of consistent peaks at the south end. I could see folks up toward No Man’s too, but it appeared to be a bit smaller and less consistent.
Quite interesting catching waves out there. The sky and the sea were almost indistinguishable because it was so glassy. Kinda reminded me of surfing on a foggy day in California. I was squinting madly trying to read the size of the incoming waves, but it was difficult to really make out how they were shaping up until they were just about on top of me. Good fun. And definitely above average power and quality.
Water was warm too. Felt like about 20-21 or so.
Waves about
Posted on May 27th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Swell is now averaging around a metre from the ESE in Sydney. Fortunately the period is 10 seconds, so there are still some fun looking chest high sets at Dee Why beach (and, I have no doubt, numerous other locales). The point is smaller and less consistent, but there are a few bods in attendance to make sure nothing gets through unridden.
At 0730 it looked almost glassy, but the Bureau’s call (see below) is for SW-S change to rattle through the place this morning. With luck, the swell should stick around through the day. If you’re waiting for the post high tide opportunities (it’s at 1033), you should be in with a chance. Could be a shower around later though.
From Thursday onward it would seem that we’re in for increasingly southerly conditions. The models are showing the swell pushing up into the 3-4 metre range from the S to SSE, but with 15-20 kts of ESE wind. So, not all that attractive looking really.
Have yourself a great old day!

Byron Bay today May 26th 2009

- It was starting to look like a 70′s surf flick this evening, or was it just the presence of Tome Wegener who came on the weekend to present ‘The Present’, In Byron Bay Today.
Well just when we’d gotten used to the swell, it was almost gone In Byron Bay Today. Even the loggers were struggling a little in today. It’s not that the surf was completely flat there were waves to be had . But the sand hasn’t settled down yet so it’s all wobbly junky and twisted, it looks clean enough, until you try to ride it. The bank that fired yesterday was gone by today. Finaly the sun appeared and you could visibly see the relief faces. So those who got out and about in the bay today enjoyed themselves just the same even if the waves were weird. We all started to recover from our storm induced cabin fever thanks to the warmth of the sun; it may well be that a few rays was just what the doctor ordered In Byron Bay Today.
Few waves about but tides are no good
Posted on May 26th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.I hit Dee Why first thing this morning which was OK- Curly was 2-3 feet but full and getting fuller as the high tide is around late morning. Best waves first thing and late afternoon. Winds offshore, sun is out and it’s a cracker day. Tomorrow looks good too. Enjoy.
A few snaps from this morning
Posted on May 26th, 2009 in At large.Made a quick loop of the plateau to grab some extra snaps of this morning. Looks as though there are some fun ones in the chest high range around the place. Whether it’s the Dee Why to Longy stretch or Collaroy-Narrabeen beach, there are little peaks aplenty, despite the high tide.
Sunny morning in Sydney
Posted on May 26th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
The quick version: Much cleaner and still some waves but the swell is dropping. According to the MHL data, it’s a touch under 2 metres at a bit under 10 seconds from the ESE. Wind is light as the day gets started and is set to go around to the northern quarters later. Late shower expected, but as we kick things off, it’s still only partly cloudy. However, once those late showers arrive, it’s set to stay cloudy and showery for the rest of the week.
Will try to update with some thoughts about the swell outlook later in the day.
Have a good one!

Barrels a Plenty In Byron Bay Today May 25th 2009
Posted on May 26th, 2009 in Byron, Cool Picks, Editor's picks, Just for fun, Local Colour, Surf Reports. There were some pretty chunky little barrels to be had In Byron Bay Today. The little white board set, finally got there day. And about time too, the crew that don’t pick up a log when it’s small, have had to head out of town for a few weeks now to find waves. So it was good to see them get their share in Byron bay today.
