Active surfers need for surf injury research project
Posted on May 23rd, 2009 in Can you help?, Top stories.Margaret Plag, a Masters student in the School of Biomedical and Health Sciences at the University of Western Sydney, Australia, is in the process of surveying surfers to determine the incidence, severity and outcomes of acute and chronic injuries from surfing. This is a new national survey that aims to identify the injuries experienced by surfers as the first step to making the sport kinder on the bodies of thousands of surfers. If you are interested in participating in the study, are aged 18 to 50 years with three or more years surfing experience, then contact Marg on 0404 011 681 or email: 97406251@student.uws.edu.au
Once recruited to the trial the survey can be completed via hard copy or CD in the mail. Participants in the survey will complete a confidential retrospective questionnaire about their surfing habits, injuries and health over the last 12 months.

Wave ridden!
Posted on May 23rd, 2009 in At large. One of those places that breaks once a year, if that. Entails long walk through the bush (hello leeches, love your work). Actually, this picture is a hoax because this was one of the very few waves ridden by this pair that actually stood up for any length of time. Water looked very murky and dodgy and the tide too high as well… maybe low tide woulda been better

Some showers and very windy still on the Central Coast this Saturday morning. Dangerous surf conditions in near cyclonic patterns. The swell is 6 – 10 feet from the east northeast. There is a strong gusty easterly breeze. High tide 0700 and low tide around 1245. Have a good weekend.
Nup, still crazy
Posted on May 23rd, 2009 in Big Picture.Hello Friends
No need to contemplate a surf today in Sydney. At least not on the open beaches. Swell peaked overnight at 6 metres (+3 metres of seas) off Sydney. It’s dropped back to “just” 5 metres at around ll sec.
Wind is ESE 25-30 kts, so everywhere is blown out.
Here is the Bureau’s summary:
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Strong wind warning.
Saturday until midnight: Wind: E 20/30 knots, easing to 15/20 knots by late afternoon/evening. Sea: 2 to 3 metres, abating to 1.5 to 2 metres by later.Swell: NE 4 to 5 metres, breaking dangerously close inshore. Abnormally high tides. Damaging surf.
Sunday: Wind: E/NE 15/20 knots, easing to 10/15 knots at night.Sea: 1.5 to 2 metres, abating to about 1 metre. Swell: E/NE 3 to 4 metres, breaking dangerously close inshore. Abnormally high tides.
Monday: Wind: N/NE 5/15 knots.

Posted on May 22nd, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why, South Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
Wind is still blowing hard along the northern beaches. The occasional quite heavy shower comes sweeping in over the raging sea too. Speaking of the ocean, I went out briefly to see if I could get a picture or two, but visibility was very poor.
I checked the Collaroy-Narrabeen stretch on the faint chance that it would miraculously have something right in the corner at Collaroy. But it’s just a churning mess – like everywhere else. The rain was coming down to hard to get any other pictures.
A little before dark, I did manage to get one more shot of the wild conditions at Dee Why (see below). According to the MHL data the swell is around the 5 metre mark from the east with a period of about 12 seconds. The blasting wind has piled another 3 metres of chop on top of that, so you won’t want to be taking the tinny out fishing tomorrow.
The latest forecast out of the BoM reckons that the wind will still be blowing hard tomorrow. If the swell follows the same pattern it has up north, then it seems set to hit a peak overnight and then to drop back a touch. Not that it matters as there aren’t going to be any open ocean beach options for non-insane surfers tomorrow in Sydney.
Some of you may recall that I flagged tomorrow as peak day based on the models. Here’s the original post so we can see how well those models went…
Speaking of models, the latest run is suggesting that there will be lots of swell (quality is an entirely separate issue) through the weekend. As the new week comes along, the it looks as though the wind will start backing off and midweek could see some light offshore conditions with some waist to chest high plus ESE swell. Then the southerlies come back, periods drop and swell goes more south and picks up…
First tide of the day tomorrow will be a high around 0700.
The Bureau sez:
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Strong wind warning.
Friday until midnight: Wind: E/SE 25/33 knots. Sea: 2 to 3 metres.Swell: NE 3 to 4 metres. Dangerous surf.
Saturday: Wind: E 20/30 knots. Sea: 2 to 3 metres.Swell: NE 3 to 4 metres. Dangerous surf.
Sunday: Wind: E/NE 10/20 knots.
Monday: Wind: N/NE 5/15 knots.
go well!
Wild and wooly again
Posted on May 22nd, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
No. Nowhere to surf along the coast of Sydney today. Next question?
The ocean is a churning mess. Spectacular awfulness prevails everywhere. Swell is now averaging around 4 metres at 11 seconds from the east. Sadly, the wind is hammering in from the ESE at 25-35 kts, so not even Collaroy is protected.
Outlook is for more of the same through to Sunday, although the models are still projecting the peak swell to arrive overnight. Then it should gradually back off but not get down to the small range until we’re into the new work week.
Next tide is a low at noon.
from the Bureau
Synoptic Situation
A complex low off the Far North coast is expected to remain slow moving. This system, in conjunction with a slow moving high over southern Tasman Sea, is expected to maintain gale to storm force winds along northern and central NSW coast and fresh to strong winds along south NSW coast during Friday. Strong to gale force wind will persist along northern NSW coast during Saturday, but ease on Sunday as the low starts to move slowly away to the east.
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Strong wind warning.
Friday until midnight: Wind: E/SE 25/33 knots. Sea: 2.5 to 3.5 metres.Swell: NE 3 to 4 metres. Dangerous surf.
Saturday: Wind: E 20/30 knots. Sea: 2 to 3 metres.Swell: NE 3 to 4 metres.
Sunday: Wind: E/NE 10/20 knots.

Posted on May 22nd, 2009 in Surf Reports.E wind, E swell. Worst of all possible combos on the E coast of Oz. Just a big mess.
Yesterday Byron Bay offshore buoy recorded waves peaking at 13m. The MHL buoy off Curl Curl has gone offline, no doubt knocked off its moorings again by the storm swells.
Overnight there were wind gusts up to 60 knots on the north coast and it’s bounced off 45 knots around Sydney a few times. Looks like it’ll be a while before we get any semblance of decent conditions again.
