3-4 feet and clean early but wind is picking up

Posted on May 18th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.

3-4 feet of swell hanging in there with light offshores this morning which is forecast to be eaten up by a strong south easterly and a building swell with Easterly winds all week.  South Curly was the go with North looking  totally messy and unsurfable as usual.  No wonder we’ve been trecking over the hill for the super peak.  Enjoy.

Monday and waves to be had

Posted on May 18th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

According to the MHL data this morning, Sydney is getting the same amount of energy it was yesterday morning. However, it looks a touch smaller to me at Dee Why. Maybe I was watching in a lull… anyway, set waves are into the head high range, so I don’t think there’d be too many complaints from the goodly size crowd.

It doesn’t look too junky, but that’s doubtless due to the light WNW breeze. According to the Bureau, we’re in for SE’ly wind today, so you’d have to think earlier will be better for just about everywhere. We’re set to have cloudy periods as the day goes along and there’s a chance of a late shower.

Low tide is at 0913 this morning and it’ll be high by 1534.

Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Monday until midnight: Wind: SE 10/15 knots reaching 15/20 knots at times mostly offshore.Sea: 1 to 1.5 metres.Swell: S 2 to 3 metres.
Tuesday: Wind: E/NE 15/20 knots. Sea: about 1.5 metres. Swell: SE about 2 metres.
Wednesday: Wind: E’ly 15/20 knots increasing to 20/30 knots later

Good to see it stacking in on the sets.

Mates having a bit of a play in Byron Bay Today
Mates having a bit of a play in Byron Bay Today

What a pleasant Sunday it was In Byron Bay Today. It was dead  flat this morning, by lunchtime we were considering renaiming it lake Byron. Yet Huey in his  infinite compassion took pity on us poor surfers. As around mid afternoon the first few lines of a new south swell started to arrive. Ther wasn’t enough yet to get really excited about. But there was at least a classic Sunday lazy logger session on for the evening crew. It wasn’t so much a dramatic rise, as a graceful building of rhythm in the bay. The window of opportunity to enjoy a new swell while it’s still  uncrowded is not long these days. And figuring it wouldn’t take long to fill up; we quickly ditched the gear and headed out for a few quick slides ourselves. Luck was on our side, we were graced with about fifty minutes of totally uncrowded, small yet utterly perfect logger bliss. Soon after the crowd begun to arrive, so we hauled the gear out and began to shoot. It wasn’t big, or even particularly exciting. But it sure was beautiful, and a hell of a lot of fun as afternoon rolled into the evening In Byron Bay Today.

Late morning piccies

Posted on May 17th, 2009 in At large, Curl Curl, Long Reef, Manly.

Hi all,

Grabbed a few snaps on the way home from soccer. The executive summary is as follows: Manly is waist to chest high, crowded, give it a 7/10; Curly is chest to head high plus, crowded along pretty much the whole beach, 6/10; Dee Why very crowded, about shoulder to head high plus, 7/10; Longy, typical Sunday crowd, waist to head high plus, mals best, 7/10

And here are the pics…

Looping back on one of the better ones.

South Curly sort've not quite coming together late this morning.

Aiming for the lip at North Curly late this morning.

Definitely want the long one for the bombies at Longy late this morning.

Hmmmm. Some decent sets now and again but not a lot of quality…

Drove from Curly to Monavale this morning and didn’t see anything worth getting in the water for, despite some megasets at Narrabeen Carparks. Weird swell and just too much S for most spots to be good today. That hasn’t stopped the crowds. Almost everywhere is mobbed, but S Narra was mostly closeouts, N Narra just messy, Dee Why fat an not hitting the banks properly, Warriwood and MonaVale too small and very crowded, Long Reef fat and messy out the back and too shallow on the inside.  Grrr.

Here’re a few shots from Narrabeen Carparks but don’t bother to go rushing out there, this was a bit of a freak set and most of the others were pretty ordinary…

Piping Hot from the House of Huey

Posted on May 17th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Get on it if ya can this morning. And if ya can’t, this afternoon should still have some quality in semi-exposed south corners (see Bureau notes), however be warned that the peak of this little pulse seems to be this morning (if the profile from buoys down south plays out here too).

As of 0830 at goodly sized Sunday crew were tearing into Huey’s latest deep southern ocean treats. Size along the beach is head high to a touch overhead. The point is both less consistent and slightly smaller on average. Not that Dee Why is your only option on a day like this. I’d expect the beaches of Sydney to be waveland, but the spots that like their energy from the south will be firing most strongly.

This morning has an ideal mix of conditions: low tide at 0822 building to a moderate high at 1437, wind from the at 7-10 kts and swell with a power range of 10-12 seconds.

Kid soccer for me this am, so might try to grab a few snaps to add to the collection on my way home. Have a good one!

Monday: Wind: E/SE 10/15 knots.Sea: about 1 metre.Swell: S 2 to 3 metres.
