Little waves to be had
Posted on June 8th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Up late watching the tennis, so not the earliest start for your correspondent this morning. As anticipated by the models, we’ve had an uptick in period and the SSE swell is therefore doing a little something. The period is averaging 10 seconds, but the Manly buoy is showing some 13 second component. Sets at Dee Why beach are pushing shoulder high* on the biggest ones – quite an improvement over the last few days.
*1000: have been watching since I posted this an hour ago, and am wondering if maybe I got a shot of the wave of the day. It looks for the most part to be considerably smaller than my shot. And if you’re at a beach with poor exposure to the swell direction, I’d say you can count on microness.
Of course being a sunny holiday morning with light offshore winds, it isn’t uncrowded. The call is for those winds to increase through the day and be going along pretty hard by late afternoon. So, despite the tide, I’d say the time to go is asap.
Next tide is a low at around 1400.
Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Strong wind warning
Monday until midnight: Wind: W/NW 15/25 knots reaching 25/30 knots offshore Sea: 1.5 to 2.5 metres, reaching 2.5 to 3 metres offshore Swell: SE about 1 metre
Tuesday: Wind: W’ly 20/30 knots increasing to 25/33 knots.Sea: 2.5 to 3.5 metres. Swell: S/SE 1 to 1.5 metres.
Wednesday: Wind: SW 20/30 knots.
Small and full
Posted on June 8th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.Buoys are showing 1m at 13 secs with swell out of the south which would probably give us some decent fun little sets but the tide is high making conditions full and weak. But the wind is offshore, crowd is low and there are some waves if you are keen. Nice looking ECL (east coast low) building again by Wednesday and then heading into the Tasman- it should produce great conditions for a few days with offshores predicted and swells over 3m. Enjoy.

Fine, dry and cool on the Central Coast this Monday morning. The swell is smooth and small at 1 – 2 feet + from the east southeast. There is light west southwest breeze forecast to go west northwest later. High tide 0840 and low tide around 1400. Local barometer 1003 hpa, 9 degrees C. 94% humidity. Have a good long weekend.

Byron Bay June 7th 2009
Posted on June 8th, 2009 in Byron, Just for fun, Local Colour, Surf Reports.Sunday started with a bit of a rumble from the northwest and some rain. But by lunchtime it absolutely stunning In Byron Bay Today. Twas no surprise town was busy, it’s a long weekend anfter all. But the beaches were really quiet. This is because for the first time in a long time, there was hardly any swell in the bayat all. There were some little waves in and around the Shire. So we soon uncovered a few nice peaks with a small crew on each happily mucking around. After we hit the Lighthouse, as it’s now officially the start of whale watching season. Right on cue there was a pod of the big fellow’s way, way , way out wide. We spent some time angling for a shot, but they were just too far out of range. The best we could manage was a huge out of focus splash in the distance dwarfing a boat full of folks following the beasts. Regardless of the vast distance, the crowd gathered at the lighthouse were making all the appropriate squeals of delight at the spectacle of breaching whales. Even if those whales were a long way offshore. It was kinda cool to witness all those stoked people getting a dose of what they had come for, In Byron Bay Today.

A southerly arrived early and laid waste to most surf options on Monday, but the east swell still had some legs and there were waves to be had at the Bower and Collaroy. So, I grabbed...
