The Simple Arithmetic of Global Warming Supports the Economics of a Climate Change Bill

Posted on June 27th, 2009 in Environment.

Just finished reading this lucid summation of where we stand with the science and politics of climate change.

A few illustrative quotes:

If you understand how compound interest works, you can understand the urgency of facing the issue today.

Because more CO2 remains in the atmosphere, and because CO2 in the atmosphere generates atmospheric heat, more atmospheric heat is being generated.

Carbon dioxide, or CO2, accounts for 85 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. As you may remember from high school biology, CO2 is absorbed by plant life as an essential part of photosynthesis. Also, CO2 dissolves in water, which is why the ocean absorbs a lot of it, over time. But after plants and the ocean have absorbed all they can absorb, the remaining CO2 remains in the atmosphere, for about 100 years. We have been generating a CO2 surplus since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution.

This is why the average CO2 count rises every year. (Within a single year, the CO2 count rises and falls according to the weather or the seasons.) Even if we cut back on the essentials of modern society – thermal power plants and motorized transportation -the CO2 count will continue its compound growth.

The United States emits, on a per capita basis, greenhouse gases at about twice the rate of any other major economy. So, from the vantage point of the rest of the world, C02 cutbacks imposed on Americans might offer the biggest bang for the buck, with comparatively minor hardship. It’s hard to see how we can ask for China’s forbearance without demonstrating our willingness to make concessions at home.

Manly Surf Report

Posted on June 27th, 2009 in Manly.

Well its a bit smaller than the previous few days sadly and one would think that its a nice opportunity to do some chores and earn some brownie points round the house. A shame as conditions are perfect.  Still a few fun sized sets around but they are few and far between. Most sets are waist high and there is the normal Sat morning crew heavily amongst it already.

1-2 feet, glassy and hellishly crowded

Posted on June 27th, 2009 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.

Looks like flies in soup this morning with a solid crowd battling for the small, weak, 1-2 foot waves. It’s glassy and the Buoys showing 1m@8 secs which is not spectacular. Forecast models are indicating a new swell around Tuesday. Enjoy.

The clouds have rolled in

I reckon you could catch some of these with the right equipment.

It's small, but clean at first light.

It's small, but clean at first light.

Hello Friends,

Gloomy start to the day along the beaches of Sydney. At first light, the skies were heavily overcast and the odd shower was falling. Huey’s left the swell settings pretty much where they were as of yesterday evening. So, the usual advice applies: if you found waves there yesterday, then it’d probably be a good idea to look there first today.

Wind is light and should remain so through the day. Swell’s out of the SSE at the moment, maybe a metre on average and sporting a power setting of 9 seconds. Should be waist to chest high on sets at the exposed spots.

These conditions should stick around through tomorrow morning – at least.

Outlook for the coming week has improved since the last run of the models. It now looks as though it will be around the present size through Tuesday morning, before it starts to bump up into the 2-3 metre range with a period setting in the 10-12 second range. At least one model reckons it’ll be coming from the ESE and that our winds will be out of the NW. That could be good!

Don talks surf this morning with ABC 702 weekend show’s Simon Marnie.

Next tide today is a high a little after noon.
