If only the wind were offshore...

Comparatively mild as the Saturday kicked off in Sydney, but as anticipated, the NE’r was already into the 15-20 kt range at first light. If you were just going by the MHL buoy data, it might look like there’d be something happening. After all, it’s showing about two metres from the east at a touch under 8 seconds. But, I have to tell you, it’s very junky and messy anywhere with exposure to the wind – and that will be pretty much everywhere.

More travels…sort of…

After checking out Northy and Mona, headed down to Long Reef and Curly for a look. I hoped that maybe one or other would sort of be out of the wind. Longy was unprepossessing in the extreme. No one out, disorganised and junky, and oddly rather small, itw was not a scene to stir a surfer’s stoke. I tried to find an angle to make a picture that converyed the general wretchedness, but in the end decided not to bother. Looks like an interesting bank might be lurking down between the lagoon and no man’s though.

There were a bunch of cars up at the surfclub end of the north Curly parking lot. Could there be waves…?

Nup. Not really. An exercise class at the SLSC was the explanation for the cars. There were three or four people messing about at north Curly, but the conditions were not radically dissimilar from Northy – ie, etremely marginal. Once again though, I must hasten to add that there were moments when wave faces materialised amongst the chop. After waiting a fair while I was able to grab a snap for you (see below).

Wandered back over the hill to Dee Why and stopped for a coffee at SeaChange (who are getting a mention without knowing it). In the time I’ve been sitting here a number of fun size waves have come through the point and just in the last few minutes some folk have paddled out to do battle with the sections and the chop. Good on ‘em. Back to the office with your correspondent… have a top old day.

Out and about: Mona to Northy

Why does someone so flexible have to do warm-up stretches at all?

Thought I’d get out and about this morning to see what was happening up at Mona and Northy (and between). Basically the wind is trashing everything. No one was in the water at Mona Vale – and for very good reason. It looked horrid. You can see there’s a bit of size around the place. Had the wind conditions been favourable, I think the odd head high plus set would not have been out of the question. But with the chop as bad as it is, one couldn’t be entirely sure about the actual size of the underlying swell. The best thing about the stop at Mona was the smell of the sea on the wind. Lovely.

Didn’t stop to look at Warriewood or little Narra as the wind was straight onshore and there’d be no hope whatsoever of a wave.

Around at Northy the situation was almost as dire, but there were a few bods in the water working on their moves. Swell doesn’t seem to have a lot of push, so their efforts to get air were not consistently rewarded. The chop was dominating, but if you picked your moment, a little shoulder high section revealed itself every now and again.

Off to have a squizz at points south, so more from me in a bit…

Tim Winton is out at Ningaloo on the big night. Now that is style. Well done young Tim! Haven’t heard anyone ask him what the waves are like there at the moment, but here in Sydney the settings are on ordinary. Swell is out of the SE at a couple metres from 9 seconds and the wind is currently out of the east to ENE at around 10-15 kts. And, the Bureau says it should ramp up into the 20-25kt range offshore later. Not the best for the south corners, but maybe there’ll be something in the protected north corners – if the wind doesn’t stay as easterly as it is now.

FWIW, I’m still liking the look of early next week. I’m hoping for clean chest to head high and offshore…

I’m hoping to get out later for a look around at things, so with luck I’ll have another picture or two and a few more words.

Definitely some waves around, but quality is not too astounding.

Well, there are waves… but I think a level of keeness is required however to get you into the water this morning. Swell is a couple metres from the SE at about 9 seconds apart, but gee is it ever lumpy, bumpy and messy. Wind is out of the east along the northern beaches as I write this, and out of the NW over in the eastern suburbs. However, as the Bureau’s forecast below indicates, it’s due to settle into an E-SE’r. Sadly, that won’t do anything to improve conditions. Looks like junkworld across the beaches of the Sydney region for today. Oh, and it’s supposed to rain heavily at times as well.

Tomorrow could see more of the junkiness, but with luck there might be a change in the mix that might just possibly see a little activity in the north corners. The swell could still have some SE compnent and the wind is due to be out of the NE. The models show the swell direction swinging around to line up with the wind, so you couldn’t say the outlook was spectacular.

Speaking of the models, there currently seems to be a common expectation that we’ll have light offshores from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon along with 2-3 metres of 7-9 sec ENE windswell…
