Saturday wrapped
Posted on July 4th, 2009 in Big Picture.Hello Friends,
Did you get in amongst it?
If so, I hope you went a bit better than I did. PB and I headed down to No Mans around mid-morning. Not sure I’ve ever encountered so much sweep there. Basically the entire go-out was spent paddling steadily toward the south. If you relaxed for a moment you’d get carried back into a dunderland of weirdness and rips straight out from the lugga. I did get a couple fun ones though, so was worth doing. However, in retrospect, I wish I’d gone for the late down the beach toward the SLSC.
I ducked down there for about 3/4 hr of shooting in the last embers of the day. Shot at least a couple hundred frames, so I’ll process them overnight and put them up on my blog tomorrow at some point – should anyone be interested. UPDATE: find 350 snaps I took in 40 mins here.
Outlook for tomorrow is for the swell to keep on pumping and for the SW to gradually ease across the day. It’ll be fine and mostly sunny as well, so I plan to get out and about with my camera again.
First tide tomorrow is a high at 0657.
Saturday until midnight: Wind: W/SW 20/30 knots, chiefly offshore.Sea: 2 to 3 metres offshore.Swell: S increasing to 2 to 3 metres.
Sunday: Wind: SW 20/25 knots easing to 15/20 knots during the day.Sea: 2 to 2.5 metres abating 1 to 2 metres. Swell: S about 3 metres.
Monday: Wind: SW 15/20 knots.
Tuesday: Wind: SW/SE 5/15 knots.
Still Flat!
Posted on July 4th, 2009 in South Carolina, Surf Reports.I think my wife and I caught that last tiny waves Friday for the next several days. While the wind will remain under 10 mph for most of Saturday the buoy data shows only 1 foot though Sunday. I recommend you just leave the board on the car and enjoy the beach.

Running around the beaches
Posted on July 4th, 2009 in At large, Curl Curl, Dee Why, Freshwater, Manly.Hello again Friends,
Wandered around the landscape on your behalf this morning and gathered a few snaps to share…
Started at Manly where the crowds were surprisingly modest for a sunny Saturday morning. Guess that cold wind is keeping a fair number of us out of the water for the early. Sets were into the chest high range, but waits were pretty long. Clean and amusing looking though.
Around to Freshwater next, and there the crowds were equally uncrowdy early. Swell was more consistent, but the shutdown factor was very high when I watched it a couple hours after high tide.
Curly was quite well attended with people scattered from one end to the other of the beach. Sets were into the overhead range and the folks were doing a lot of peak and section chasing. Looks like a good workout and there were a few juicy specimens on offer. Probably the biggest waves I saw.
Over the hill at Dee Why things seem to be about the same as when I reported earlier, ie, inconsistent and smaller at the point, then shoulder to head high up the beach from just north of the clubhouse to the Lugga entrance. Crowds were crowdy too.
If you can’t find yourself a wave somewhere, you aren’t trying very hard!
Avalon to Narrabeen Rpt
Posted on July 4th, 2009 in Surf Reports.Shoulder-to-head high southerly swell has started marching into the beaches that like it. It’s only around a 10 second period, so there’s enough energy without it being labelled “for experienced surfers only’. Wind is light.

Are you ready?
Posted on July 4th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Shaping up to be a pretty nice day out there, albeit somewhat chilly (we’re going to a high of around 16). And we have waves! The hardy early risers have scored themselves some rather tasty shoulder high sets at first light. Skies are clear and the westerly should gradually decrease as the day goes along.
The good news is that it’s looking as though it’ll only be getting better. The models are currently showing good prospects right into the middle of the coming week. The winds should be lighter than we’ve had over the last couple days too. It’ll be cold but mostly clear.
We’re coming off a high tide at 0608 and heading toward a low at 1139.

Byron Bay Today July 03 / 09 + Most pop April o9
Posted on July 4th, 2009 in Byron, Cool Picks, Editor's picks, Just for fun, Local Colour, Surf Reports.Good God Man, was it flat today or what? That must have been the smallest day of the year so far In Byron Bay Today. Beautiful weather, but as close to zero swell as it gets. There were a few tiny lines around the ocean side for a desperado logger session. But that’s about it, good thing we’ve got the ‘Most Popular Images of In Byron Bay Today’ for April 09. Because I got to tell you there were some pretty inspirational moments that month, yes indeed. There was solid swell and some interesting types around town too. Now we all knew that Danny Wills was gonna popup as the number one shot for april. I mean really who else could it have been? Out of the gloom he pulls this stonking great 5 second barrel only to pop out, paddle out and stroke back into another. It was a ghty session with real people paddling in to real waves None of this tow silliness. Anyway Now we’re coming to the end of our most popular Byron images series. We’ve got one more to go for May. Then it’s back to business as usual with our updates. There will also be some extra stuff coming in the site very soon. But you’ll have to wait and see where we’re going with that. In mean time we hope enjoy April’s most popular. Don’t miss tomorrow’s ‘Most Popular Images of In Byron Bay Today’ for May 09. Because it’s bound to be interesting as that’s when all the storm carnage went down.
