Solid numbers

Hello Friends,

Swell power setting ramped through the day on Sunday. It was around the 10 sec mark at dark last night and is now sitting on a juicy 12 seconds. Average size at sea went from 1.5 metres yesterday lunchtime to just on two metres now. Direction is pretty much dead east. Interestingly it seems to be the same from Eden to Byron.

Low tide was around 0600 and therefore high is just after noon.

I’m waiting for enough light to go grab some piccies… in the meantime, if you want a good idea of what went on at south and North Narrabeen yesterday, have a squiz at my personal site for shooting sessions from this weekend.

Looks like a nice day at the beach and that is about it. While we will have WSW winds near 15 mph, there is no swell to speak of. The best you can do is look for a tiny tide push after 5:00 am or after 5:30 pm.

Hello Friends,

Since around midnight the swell period setting has started to shoot upward. As of about 0900 it had increased to nearly 10 seconds. The same pattern is showing on the buoys north of us. Average period up at Byron is getting close to 11 sec. Size of the swell at sea is still a touch under 2 metres off the Sydney coast. It’s up to 3 metres at Byron though.

Dee Why point is looking relatively marginal, but then again it’s not one of the first spots you’d check when the swell’s out of the east. One such that is worth a look usually is Manly, but I’ve had a text message in this am that says the middle of the beach is around the 3 foot mark and “a bit messy”.

As many of you know, I’ve got my mitts on a Nikon D3 professional DSLR and a fast 300mm telephoto lens, so I’m going to head out shortly and grab some more pics from around the place.

Wind’ll be offshore through the day and the next morning tide is a high at 1123. Sadly for my photographic aspirations, the skies are set to be overcast and periodically showery.

Looks as though we should have waves for the next week, but if you had to pick a peak day or days it’d be tomorrow into Tuesday I’d say.

Now here’s the kind of thing I like to see in the Marine forecast:

Synoptic Situation
A high pressure system to the east of Tasmania extends a ridge along the New South Wales coast. A deep low near Norfolk Island is moving southeast and will generate an increasing SE ocean swell Sunday and Monday particularly over northern parts of the coast. A complex low system over the Bight will move slowly east bringing westerly winds to coastal parts for the forecast period.

And for those of us in Sydney, this looks okay

Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Sunday until midnight: Wind: NW 10/15 knots, increasing to 15/20 knots in the afternoon.Sea: 1 to 1.5 metres rising to 1.5 to 2 metres.Swell: E/SE 2 to 2.5 metres.
Monday: Wind: W/NW 13/18 knots.Sea: 1 to 1.5 metres. Swell: E 2 to 2.5 metres, decreasing
Tuesday: Wind: W’ly 10/20 knots.

Yeah, well, that easterly swell has arrived – and it seems there were plenty of people waiting for it, too.  Northern ends of both Narrabeen & Avalon are lighting up quite nicely with regular WarriewoodNewportNth AvalonNth AvalonNth NarrabeenNth Narrabeenheadhigh sets

We have waves

Posted on July 12th, 2009 in Manly.

3pm update.   Well the new swell has certainly kicked in this arvo with some lovely and sizeable waves hitting Manly and although the wind is not perfect its clean down the northern end of the beach.  Queenscliff is the pick of it with some lovely rights firing in with a few closeout sets to keep ya on your toes. The bigger ones would be almost 6 foot and they are very very nice. Its a tough paddle but well worth it.

Although to be honest the northly aspect of the wind is ruining things a little. The new swell has definitely started to arrive with some lovely looking 3 foot sets with a bit of power in them hitting the beach this morning. The only problem is that we have had 12 knot winds from the north all night and as a result we are a little bit bumpy on the face and not as perfect as she could be. If you surfed yesterday and enjoyed yourself then you should be definitely hitting the water today.  Looks like the wind will stay from this angel for the rest of the day sadly. Will probably shift a littel more west tom. Fingers crossed.

Welcome to In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Windup. It was a bit of a wintery, windy and woolly old week in the bay. We started off well enough, with glorious weather early in the week, warm with gentle offshore breezes. But by mid week it quickly degraded into windy, wet and bloody cold. All that blustering and yet we didn’t begin to see any real swell until late Thursday. Now if there was a theme for this week, it’s the grossly unprepared surfing population, both residents and visitors alike. People just don’t expect it to get this cold this far north, and so there was much grumbling from the majority about not having enough rubber. Some were turning blue in boardies and vests. The crew have been spinning out about how cold it’s been, but how soon we all forget. We go through this every year in the bay. It can and does get cold here. In fact if you live here you need more variations of wetsuits than further south. Down the coast you get good thick and warm rubber. It does you all winter spring and autumn. But in Byron, well you need a bit of everything, lighter rubber for the warmer days. slightly heavier for the cold and windy days, and an array of differing thickness vests for spring and autumn. Although the water’s warmer, the wind and air temperature can vary quite radically in winter. So when you drive into town pack enough rubber to make a choice. Because in winter it can be summery & warm one minute, and downright bloody freezing the next, In Byron Bay Today.

PS enjoy the BBQ today guys, wish we could be there, being an old Longy buy myself.
