Going for some air at Curly around 1350

I went shooting at mid Curly from about 1350 to 1415. The gallery below contains a few of samples of the conditions. I’ll publish all the pictures I took on my personal site very soon.

Conditions were pretty good with a metre and a half of 11 second SSE swell turning into shoulder to head high plus sets along the beach at Curl Curl.

I was stationed in the middle of the beach so that I could get shots across a reasonably wide arc. I was using the professional grade Nikon D3 with a 200-400mm zoom.

Shark attack off Broken Head – from the Northern Star Lismore

Saffron Howden | 30th July 2009

A file picture of a Bronze Whaler.

A 14-year-old surfer was thrown into the air and left with a graze and a punctured wetsuit after a shark made a bee-line for his board this morning near Byron Bay.

The Northern Star understands the local boy, who was surfing off Broken Head, was paddling back out from the shore when he and the shark collided.

The impact caused the boy to fly into the air and his wet suit was swiped and punctured, leaving him grazed.

It is understood his injuries are not severe.

The attack comes as the shark season ramps up in line with the migration of fish they feed on.

“(Shark season) seems to correspond with the run of Australian salmon up the coast,” fisherman and fishing correspondent Tony Zann said.

“The professional industry has virtually stopped fishing for them.”

But Mr Zann said shark attacks could happen at any time.

“At any time of the year if you’re swimming or surfing around a great school of fish your chances of being bitten by a shark are raised astronomically,” he said.

Mr Zann said sharks were particularly active at first and last light.

Dee Why–looking pretty good now…

Posted on July 30th, 2009 in Surf Reports.

Seems Huey has stirred things up a bit in the past hour.

Had a quick surf at The Point a while ago. Lots of waiting for about one decent wave every 10 minutes. Now it seems to have started to fire a bit. Sets are coming more frequently, tide’s rising and the big ones are overhead and a bit with some hollow ones being had by the brave and adventurous.  Wind seems to be behaving better now as well compared to an hour or so ago.

Catching the start of the swell?

Getting some acceleration happening this morning.

Hello Friends,

Wagged my magazine proofing this morning and grabbed a few snaps, along with a few waves at the point. Only out for an hour, but durning that time the sets seemed to be getting more frequent and juicier. You had to be patient though. According to the latest MHL data, the swell height increased slightly since my first report and the average period has stretched out a touch as well. With luck the period will get a little longer and the consistency will improve too.

Longer period sets packing a little punch.

Mona Vale

There’s a few sick closeout’s coming through Mona, you can really pick up some good speed as your going straight down the face, it’s really nice and warm in the water and i recommend everybody should go surfing out there today! Yeeeeww

A few waves, but not quite firing yet…

Posted on July 30th, 2009 in Surf Reports.

At 0830 there’s the rare head-high set at Dee Why but they’re few and far between. About half a dozen SUPs, Skis, BBs and one surfer doing a lot of waiting. Dozen or so out further up the beach. Charts are showing about 1.5m of SE swell at 10 sec — a far cry from the predicted 18 second interval–but it COULD still come.  Should be more of the same for the next few days.

Don’t expect anything epic but at least it’s not flat.

Cheers,

Rob

Bit of a rise in size, but although the buoys reckon there’s longer period stuf happening, it still looked pretty weak to me. Around chest-high most placesAvalonNewportSth Narrabeen

Hello Friends,

Good news, we have a little break from the slight to flat conditions. Nothing to get over excited about, but thanks to 10-11 seconds on the power setting, we have a surfable little 1.5 metre SSE swell. Should be a few surf options around this morning as I’d expect the waist to chest high lines will be working into numerous places. One such is Dee Why where both the point and the beach are showing.

The models reckon we should be getting 14-16 sec period energy today, but as things got started, there was no sign of it in the latest MHL data for Sydney. However, down Batemans Bay way the peak period has bounced into the lower end of that range a couple times in the last 12 hours. So, if you’re getting in the water today, don’t be surprised if the odd bomb set turns up amongst the waist to chest high average stuff.

Should be a sunny day with offshores too. Guess I might just get out and about with a camera…

Have yourself a top old day!
