Paul sent us this link. Some kids have taught their pet rats to surf. And they have the pictures to prove it. Deeply weird!

Maya Gabeira catches largest wave ridden by a woman

Posted on August 14th, 2009 in Surf News, Top stories.

The Los Angeles Times last year dubbed Maya Gabeira the “Super Woman of Big-Wave Surfing,” because of her remarkable exploits in a male-dominated universe.

Two days ago at shark-infested Dungeons off South Africa, the striking Brazilian lived up to that billing — and then some — by riding what many are saying was the largest wave ever ridden by a woman.

Got wet, how ’bout you?

Posted on August 14th, 2009 in Dee Why.

Hey all,

Just a couple piccies to share from this morning at Dee Why point. Was getting smaller and less consistent as the tide came in, but every now and then a worthy set turned up. Crowd dwindled into the sub-10 range by midday. Beachy had a few more than that chasing some crunchy numbers in front of the surf club.

Still some waves for the late afternoon crew I’d say, but swell is running out of puff. Happy hunting!

Another one from late this morning.

This one slipped past the hungry crew - late morning, Dee Why.

Nothing….

but rain and SE winds 6-10 mph. If we look to the future the tropics really only have one wave worth watching and that is not going to affect us till next week. The best we can hope for is something by Sunday.

Winding down but not gone

Posted on August 14th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Looks as though yesterday’s average set wave is today’s bomb set at Dee Why. So, it’s not gone, but it’s definitely smaller and less consistent. Population levels at Dee Why have decreased as a consequence. There are still some waves into the chest to shoulder high range (on a tall person).

From the shape of the forecasts it looks as though we’re in for a run of small but not quite flat conditions over the weekend and right now the models aren’t too cheerful about next week.

Oh well, we’ve been having fun for the last couple days and I reckon it’s been one of the great winters for consistent swell.

Amateur and specialty division entries are now open for the 2010 Noosa Festival, event director Phil Jarratt announced at the weekend. Jarratt said that entries were available for on-line purchase or as a download in 11 age divisions and in 5 specialty events, including money events in Stand Up Paddle, Tandem and Noserider Trials.

The Noosa Festival, now in its 19th year, will run from Sunday, 14 March to Sunday, March 21, with some specialty events to commence on 14 March and amateur age divisions from 15 March. The official opening ceremony and paddle-out will take place from 5pm on 14 March, following the running of a 5K stand up paddle race on Laguna Bay. Competitor registration will be available at the Golden Breed concept store from midday to 4pm on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14.

Jarratt said that the 2010 festival would take approximately 600 competitors spread across all divisions, and that entries in amateur divisions would be on a first come, first served basis.

“We’ve also opened up the family challenge event to the public for next year. It proved hugely popular this year, so we’ve expanded it to 24 teams. Teams must consist of two generations, eg mother/son, father/daughter.”

Jarratt said he was delighted to welcome back lead sponsors Global and Golden Breed, and that further sponsorships would be announced at the end of August.

What the hell, someone snakes ya, we just keep going, In Byron Bay Today.

It was a southerly feathering out the mess that’s been the bay, over the last few days. Grabbed the gear and raced out to shoot, but it was a twisted up two metre easterly swell. It just wasn’t quite working. The swell lines had taken a battering over the last few days and it was lumpy and bumpy at best in the bay. Now folks the weather is warming up, but don’t forget those northerlies pull the cold water out of the depths, so pop some rubber in your kit, In Byron Bay Today.
