Late morning option: Curly
Posted on August 16th, 2009 in Curl Curl.Coming back from kid soccer and checked out the mighty Curly. It was pretty busy, but there were quite a few take off zones along the stretch, no one of which was particularly crowded. Set wave faces were into the head high range on the bigger ones. Wind starting to become a factor though…
Here are a few snaps…
Make your luck
Posted on August 16th, 2009 in Big Picture, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
As you probably know, we’re in for a high of 28 today thanks to a shipment of hot inland air. Not much wind about at the moment, but Huey’s plan is to dial it up to 15-20 kts by lunch at into the 20-30 kt range by close of play. We have about a metre of SSE swell at around 10 seconds apart, so on sets you should see wave faces in the chest high range. It looks as though these conditions prevail up and down the NSW coast, so travelling about probably isn’t going to yield any dramatic improvement to your prospects. It’s the old story: if you found waves there yesterday, check it first today.
Since the wind is due to pick up so dramatically, my guess is that it will likely flatten the swell significantly. But from the look of the models, we should have a little something trickling in tomorrow morning and maybe even on Tuesday. Thereafter things look very spring like – ie, marginal to flat.
Go well with your day!

Gazos Creek, 15 August 2009
Posted on August 16th, 2009 in California, Half Moon Bay, Surf Sessions. There was a small group of guys out at Gazos Creek on the main peak, which was sometimes overhead. A second peak appeared a bit less daunting but I admit to a niggling aprehension as I suited up and walked to the beach with my shortboard. One good thing about surfing with L, as when I surfed with SoCal deserter D, is that it forces me to push my boundaries, both of comfort and skill.
Although the short-period windswell had the waves stacked up to the beach, we lucked into a slot and I got out the back with only one (successful) duckdive. Returning from the inside was not so easy other times, and an outside bomb later sent me spinning when I couldn't get deep enough under it. The waves were often moundy and hard to get into, but then jacked up very steep - close to vertical - in the blink of an eye. L pulled off several rides, nearly free-falling to the bottom, and I just tried to make the drops. L gave me some tips: angle more, shift weight back immediately after popping up to flatten the board so the nose doesn't drop, be quick. I didn't land any this time, but next time I will!
On the way home, S and I bought a warm loaf of artichoke garlic herb bread from the Country Bakery in Pescadero. Two thumbs up as a post-surf snack.
Speakers on for an audio preview of The Time Traveler's Wife by L.
Byron Bay Today’s Weekend review Aug 16th 2009
Posted on August 16th, 2009 in Byron, Local Colour, Surf Reports.
Welcome to the, In Byron Bay Today Weekend Review. We’ll be bringing you this extra new update once a week on Saturdays. It will include a basic review of the past week, notice of new content on the In Byron Bay Today site. Plus notice of any updated product, goods and service reviews. We’ll inform you of updated discounts, freebees that have been added to the prize pool, plus any upcoming news or events that we think you may be interested in. This last week saw a very spring like weather pattern hit Byron Bay. We had warm weather, easterly swells and very strong northerly winds. This pattern tends to repeat itself quite regularly during spring, but it’s hard to predict and can change rapidly. We’ve added three new people to the ‘Who’s That’ pages. You may want to check them out, they’re a good read. In other news we reviewed a local and quite well respected Shiatsu Practitioner whose review will be added to the site in the next week or so. She has generously offered a free Shiatsu Treatment to one of our lucky subscribers. Trust me; it’s joyous, so keep your eyes peeled for that when it’s drawn. Now about the lucky draw, we’ve drawn a prize and a name today it’s just five blocks of wax, but it’s someting. It’s on our home page, somewhere. here’s a clue check the comments. The drawn subscriber has until midnight Sunday to contact us using the email they subscribed with to claim their freebees In Byron Bay Today.
